Many appreciate its cozy atmosphere, charming neighborhood, and meticulous attention to detail.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently highlight several outstanding aspects of the Great Island Inn:

  • Location: The inn's placement in the quiet coastal town of New Castle, on an island, is a major draw. It offers a peaceful retreat with easy access to the ocean and Great Island Common park, often described as "top-notch" and "perfect." Its proximity to a "stellar cafe" next door is also frequently mentioned as a significant convenience.
  • Design & Ambiance: The inn, housed in beautifully renovated historic buildings from the 1820s, is lauded for its "great decor," "chic and elegance," and "uncanny attention to detail." The modern design within a traditional framework creates a stylish and comfortable atmosphere.
  • Amenities: The property offers a range of high-quality amenities, including full-size kitchens in some apartments, in-room laundry facilities (washer/dryer), air conditioning, private bathrooms, tea/coffee makers, and hypoallergenic bedding. Guests also appreciate complimentary WiFi, furnished patios, private check-in/check-out services, and outdoor spaces like a garden, picnic areas, and barbecue facilities. Thoughtful touches like provided wine and snacks or an L.L. Bean tote with beach towels enhance the stay.

3. Room Quality

Rooms at Great Island Inn are consistently described as "very clean," "comfortable," "immaculate," and "quiet and tucked away." The accommodations typically feature studio or apartment layouts, some offering sea or river views. Each unit is individually furnished and decorated, boasting pillowtop beds with premium bedding. Specific room features often include a retro full fridge, jute carpet, cozy duvet-covered beds, and dedicated central air conditioning and heating.

4. Dining Experience

While the Great Island Inn itself does not provide breakfast, guests highly value the presence of an "excellent cafe right next door" or a "stellar café situated right next door" for their morning meals and lunch. Many guests enjoy grabbing breakfast there and bringing it back to their rooms. The inn also offers comprehensive recommendations for local dining options, including highly-rated breakfast spots in Portsmouth and a variety of lunch and dinner establishments in New Castle, Portsmouth, and Kittery, Maine.

5. Service & Staff

Additional amenities like shampoo can be requested from a personal concierge.

6. Location & Accessibility

Located in New Castle, New Hampshire, a peaceful island community with historic sites, lighthouses, and beaches, the inn is ideal for those seeking tranquility. It's a short walk to the ocean and Great Island Common beach and park. Downtown Portsmouth, with its vibrant shopping, nightlife, and over fifty restaurants, is just a "scenic, five-minute drive away." Regarding accessibility, the property has a front entrance ramp, smooth flooring in rooms, and handrails in stairways. However, there are three steps to reach the main entrance, and upper floors are accessible by stairs only, as the property does not have elevators. Private, off-street parking is available, though it incurs an additional daily fee.

7. Value & Pricing

The Great Island Inn generally offers good "value for money," scoring 8.8 on Booking.com. Prices for a one-night stay for two adults can start from approximately $129.0, although rates are subject to change. The inn encourages direct bookings to avoid additional service, cleaning, and parking fees often charged by third-party booking sites. Private parking is available on-site for an extra charge of $29 per day.

8. Common Complaints

While overwhelmingly positive, some recurring points of feedback or policies to note include:

  • No On-site Breakfast: The inn does not provide breakfast directly, though a highly-rated cafe is conveniently located next door.
  • Parking Fees: Private parking on-site is available but comes with a daily charge of $29.
  • Stair Access: The property lacks elevators, and upper floors are accessible only by stairs, which may be a consideration for guests with mobility issues. There are also three steps to the main entrance.
  • Quiet Hours Policy: Strict quiet hours are enforced daily between 9 PM and 7 AM, prohibiting loud TVs, amplified music, gatherings, running laundry, or unattended dogs. Non-compliance can result in early departure without refunds.
  • Pet Policy: While service animals are welcome, regular pets are not allowed, except for dogs in specific designated rooms, incurring a $50 per dog per night fee (maximum two dogs). Dogs cannot be left unattended during quiet hours, and unannounced pets will incur a significant penalty fee.
  • Limited Housekeeping: Daily housekeeping is not provided, with guests expected to utilize in-room laundry and cleaning supplies.
  • Cancellation Policy: The cancellation policy is strict, especially for third-party bookings which are fully non-refundable. Direct bookings have a fee for cancellations made less than 14 days before arrival.

We loved our three day stay at the Great Island Inn! Our room was large, well designed and decorated with a comfortable King sized mattress and bedding. The room included a kitchen and in-room laundry as well. Also, just downstairs was a cafe that had delicious baked goods, breakfast sandwiches and salads. The island is quiet and peaceful and Portsmouth is about a 10 minute drive away. We wou...

We had a pet friendly room with street access. Super clean and nicely remodeled. The shower was fantastic for person with bad knees :). The only downside is king size bed is too large for available space so getting around the bed was difficult and side tables very small. The room shares a wall with a small restaurant but noise was not an issue and it was super convenient for breakfast. The locati...

We LOVED our room; spacious, updated, kitchen (though we didn’t use it) is cool to have, big enough bathroom w/ a tub (and Laundry stack), impressive. IT WAS PERFECT. Service: big shout-out to Milena who answered the phone after hours to clarify/rectify something. THANK YOU:) Location: Just exquisite, a 5 min drive (or 45 min walk) to Portsmouth. Easy.
