Expert Review: Grand Hôtel & Spa Nuxe Serre Chevalier

The Grand Hôtel & Spa Nuxe Serre Chevalier in Saint-Chaffrey, France, is a highly regarded Michelin Key Selected property that consistently earns praise for its exceptional location, outstanding spa facilities, and dedicated staff. Guests frequently highlight it as a superb choice for both relaxation and active holidays in the heart of the French Alps.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for Grand Hôtel & Spa Nuxe Serre Chevalier is overwhelmingly positive, with reviews frequently rating it between 8.0 and 9.0 out of 10. Guests often describe their stay as "lovely," "great," and "beautiful," emphasizing a strong sense of satisfaction and a desire to return.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently laud the hotel's sensational Nuxe Spa as a major draw, offering a serene escape with various treatments, a hammam, sauna, and a heated relaxation basin. The unbeatable location is another standout feature, situated directly opposite the ski lift (gondola) in Chantemerle, providing convenient ski-in/ski-out access. The excellent breakfast spread and the friendly, attentive staff also receive widespread acclaim. Additional highlights include modern rooms, a convenient subterranean garage, and appealing outdoor pool and spa facilities.

3. Room Quality

The rooms are generally described as modern, clean, and exceptionally comfortable, featuring "really comfy" beds and "premium bedding" to ensure a good night's sleep. The hotel, completely renovated in 2016, offers 64 rooms ranging from cozy classic rooms to spacious family suites, capable of accommodating 2 to 8 guests. Many guests recommend securing a balcony room, particularly on the 4th floor, for "great mountain and ski lift views." While predominantly positive, some older reviews have noted "aging walls and radiators" in certain rooms, and one mentioned a "very small" single toilet in a three-bedroom apartment.

4. Dining Experience

The breakfast experience at Grand Hôtel & Spa Nuxe Serre Chevalier is consistently praised as "superb," "delicious," and "very qualitative." Guests appreciate the wide array of options, including fresh juices, various breads and pastries, fruits, eggs, and bacon. The hotel boasts two French cuisine restaurants: L'Annexe, offering a relaxed brasserie atmosphere with mountain specialties and dishes made from fresh, local products, and Les Planches, known for its refined bistronomic cuisine. There are also two bars, including Bar L'Alta, celebrated for its inventive cocktails. Overall food quality is reported as very good. One guest highlighted a chef going "above and beyond" to prepare nutritious off-menu food for summer sports. However, one past comment mentioned a "lack of bread at breakfast" on the last day of the summer season, and another described some restaurant food and desserts as "good but very simple."

5. Service & Staff

The hotel's staff receives glowing reviews for their exceptional hospitality. They are frequently described as "welcoming," "kind," "friendly," "helpful," "attentive," and "efficient." The Grand Hôtel & Spa Nuxe Serre Chevalier enjoys an "fantastic," "ideal," and "exceptional location" in the village of Chantemerle. It offers direct access to the ski slopes, being situated "at the foot of the pistes" and "directly opposite the ski lift (gondola)." The hotel is also conveniently close to various shops, restaurants, bars, and resort activities. The ESF (French Ski School) meeting point is directly in front of the hotel, a significant advantage for families. Briançon is a short 10-minute drive away. For those traveling by car, a subterranean parking garage is available.

7. Value & Pricing

While specific pricing varies, typical rates for a stay at the Grand Hôtel & Spa Nuxe Serre Chevalier can range from approximately $120 to $524 USD, depending on the season and room type. Guests generally perceive the hotel as offering good value, with many affirming that "paying for a mountain view" room is well worth the cost. The local tourist tax ("taxe de séjour") is an additional €2 per person per night.

8. Common Complaints

While reviews are overwhelmingly positive, a few minor recurring issues or criticisms have been noted. These include a "very small single toilet" in some three-bedroom apartments, occasional comments that room turnovers "could be a little more diligent", and a past incident where the jacuzzi and hammam in the spa experienced a temporary technical issue. One older review mentioned a "lack of bread" at breakfast towards the end of the summer season, and another described some restaurant meals as "good but very simple". Some guests have also commented on certain areas appearing "a little dated" despite the 2016 renovation, and cleaning in corridors at 5 pm causing minor inconvenience.

Great location and sercice. The room we got 211 was tiny and no view.... make sure you book you spa slots in advance as it is very limited. Very dissapointed that steam room was not working for the whole week while the hotel position itself as spa type of the hotel. I would not choose to come back considering that there was no compensation offering for limited services....

Everything was in good condition and worked well, but the Chalet layout was terrible. The loft is obviously for kids, which would have been nice to know in advance. Staff were all lovely. Prime location in about the middle of everything.

Lovely staff and hotel location, service is great with delicious breakfast with home cooked food and a lovely view on the mountains. Outside pool is great in the summer, but the indoor pool and spa area can feel a bit claustrophobic with a lack of window, but it’s a very mindful experience without crowds. On the downside, our room came with very small toilets separated from the bathroom, if you ar...
