Expert Review: GOTO RETREAT by Onko Chishin

GOTO RETREAT by Onko Chishin in Goto, Japan, stands as a distinguished luxury escape, recognized with One Michelin Key for both 2024 and 2025. Perched on cliffs overlooking the volcanic lava coastline of the Goto Islands, the retreat offers an immersive experience blending modern design with the serene natural beauty of Saikai National Park.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for GOTO RETREAT by Onko Chishin is overwhelmingly positive, boasting a remarkable rating of 9.3/10 based on numerous reviews. Guests consistently describe their experiences as "exceptional," "out of this world," and "wonderfully luxurious & comfortable". The hotel is particularly favored by couples, with a near-perfect location rating of 9.7/10. Reviewers frequently commend the property for its world-class comfort, hospitality, and overall value proposition.

2. Key Highlights

Guests are captivated by the hotel's sleek architecture and breathtaking ocean views, which are visible from every room and even the lobby. The private open-air baths available in all 26 guest rooms, soon to be natural hot springs, are a significant draw, allowing guests to enjoy panoramic vistas around the clock. The tranquil, private, and relaxing atmosphere is a consistent highlight, making it an ideal destination for a rejuvenating getaway. The hotel has also received several design accolades, including the 2023 Good Design Award.

3. Room Quality

The accommodations at GOTO RETREAT are described as "perfect" and "phenomenal," with a strong emphasis on comfort and sophisticated design. Guests can choose from various room types, including Superior, Standard, and Deluxe Twin Rooms, all featuring stunning sea views. Each room is equipped with modern amenities such as air conditioning, private bathrooms, and in-room open-air baths. The design is often praised for its simplicity, elegance, and cohesive aesthetic throughout the property.

4. Dining Experience

The on-site restaurant, ray dining, receives high praise for its culinary offerings. It serves a tantalizing blend of Japanese and local cuisines, including seasonal kaiseki dishes that reflect the unique landscape, climate, history, and culture of Goto. Guests have highlighted the "unbelievably good quality in breakfast & dinners". The dining ambiance is versatile, offering traditional, modern, and romantic settings, and also caters to vegetarian options.

5. Service & Staff

The service and staff at GOTO RETREAT are consistently lauded as "friendly, helpful, and personable". With an excellent rating of 9.6 for staff, guests frequently mention feeling well-cared for, with some specifically thanking individuals by name for making their stay even better. The hospitality is described as "world-class," exceeding expectations.

6. Location & Accessibility

Located on the picturesque Goto Islands in Nagasaki Prefecture, the hotel offers a secluded retreat with outstanding natural surroundings. Its proximity to Fukue Airport (less than 15 minutes away) is noted as ideal for island exploration. The hotel is situated near the geopark/Abunza lava coast and within Saikai National Park, offering opportunities for activities like island cruises, golf, and trekking. The tranquil setting is particularly appealing for those seeking a peaceful escape.

7. Value & Pricing

While considered a high-end experience with a corresponding price tag, many guests view GOTO RETREAT by Onko Chishin as offering an "exceptional value proposition". Room rates for one night with two meals included can range from approximately 90,200 JPY to 113,200 JPY for two to four persons. Breakfast costs around JPY 3850 per person, and a hosted evening meal is approximately JPY 18150. The overall luxurious amenities, stunning views, and high level of service contribute to guests feeling it is worth the cost.

8. Common Complaints

Despite overwhelming positive feedback, a few recurring criticisms have been noted. Some guests found the breakfast and dinner meal plan policies overly rigid, making it difficult to dine on-premise without a pre-purchased plan. Transportation from the ferry terminal was also mentioned as a challenge, with a reliance on taxis that often do not accept credit cards, and a suggestion for a complimentary hotel driver. Limited phone connection in certain areas of the hotel was another reported issue. While the hotel is generally considered a 5-star property, one reviewer expressed slight hesitation about its full 5-star rating, and another felt it was "not quite up to standards of other hotels in same chain". The remote location, while a highlight for many, might not suit those seeking bustling nightlife.

PERFECTION! If I could give this 10 stars, I would. It's very remote and worth every minute of travel to get there. The serenity and silence of the rooms, the amazing food and service, having a private outdoor hot tub as part of your room... I've never been any place like this. If you want a few days of monk-like, but luxurious high-end existence, this is the place - there's not much to do except ...

The hotel is beautiful it is the design between a monetary and a high tech new hotel with spacious rooms. Very strange vibe very zen. I missed totally a place to sit outside a terrace or a garden and a pool. Weather was great but you can not sit outside at all. I know Japan is not keen on terraces and a place to enjoy the fresh air and the sun but we have a million dollar view but only in ...

Our stay at Goto Ray Resort was an unforgettable experience, defined by its sheer beauty and tranquility. The resort itself is stunning, with excellently appointed and spacious rooms that cater to comfort and luxury. A sound bath option would be a wonderful addition to the already impressive array of offerings. Although we didn’t book a spa treatment, we regret it now as the spa looked beautiful ...

On a field trip this autumn? I stayed here for 4 nights in November 25,2023. The scenery is kinda beautiful and the beds are cozy. The staff are polite, cool and appreciative. They look like the staff in the hotel in Tokyo that I went since Christmas. The food was delicious, but some of them cost a penny or two. We have menus for every night. The food we enjoyed was Goto beef loin with vegetable...
