Expert Review: Myoken Ishiharaso
Myoken Ishiharaso in Kirishima, Japan, is a distinguished ryokan lauded as a Michelin One-Key property, signifying "A very special stay." Guests consistently describe it as a truly remarkable hotel offering an unforgettable experience.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
Myoken Ishiharaso garners overwhelmingly positive feedback, often described as "the best accommodation ever" with "flawless" rooms, service, and cuisine. It receives perfect scores of 10.0 on Agoda for value, facilities, cleanliness, location, and staff performance, demonstrating exceptional guest satisfaction. Reviewers consider it a 5-star ryokan and "definitely Michelin-worthy."
2. Key Highlights
Guests particularly love the exceptional natural hot springs, with five different baths, including open-air, indoor, and private options, all fed directly from seven on-site sources without added water or storage. The incredible, multi-course Japanese cuisine, featuring fresh, seasonal, and local Kagoshima ingredients, is another standout feature. The exceptional and friendly staff, combined with the idyllic and serene riverside location amidst lush greenery, are also frequently praised. The ryokan blends modern aesthetics with traditional Japanese design, creating a luxurious yet comfortable atmosphere.
3. Room Quality
Myoken Ishiharaso offers 18 to 19 elegantly furnished rooms, each with a unique character and equipped with modern amenities for a comfortable and relaxing stay. Both traditional Japanese-style rooms and Western-style suites are available. Many rooms are new, modern, and provide stunning river views, allowing guests to hear the soothing sounds of the Amori River. Interiors are characterized by minimal and warm designs, featuring tatami floors, paper screens, and cedar soaking tubs. Certain rooms, particularly the "Ishikura Rooms," come with private open-air baths, allowing for an exclusive onsen experience. In-room amenities are comprehensive, including toiletries, bathrobes, pajamas, yukatas, green tea sets, coffee machines, and complimentary mini-bars with beer. Guests recommend river-facing rooms over mountain-side rooms, as the latter may offer views of the road.
4. Dining Experience
The dining experience is a major highlight, with an incredible multi-course Japanese dinner and breakfast included in the room rate. The chefs meticulously highlight local Kagoshima ingredients, such as seasonal produce, fresh seafood, river fish, wild vegetables, handmade tofu, buckwheat noodles, and tender pork. Meals are praised for their beautiful presentation and are served in seasonal courses that are consistently lauded as exquisite and Michelin-worthy. Vegetarian and vegan options are also available. Guests can enjoy their meals in a dedicated dining space or through room service, which is extensive. There is also a cozy coffee shop on the property.
5. Service & Staff
The service at Myoken Ishiharaso is consistently rated as exceptional. The dedicated and friendly staff are noted for going "above and beyond" to ensure guests feel welcomed and well taken care of, leaving a lasting impression with their genuine warmth and professionalism. English-speaking staff are available to assist international travelers.
6. Location & Accessibility
Nestled in Kirishima, Kagoshima Prefecture, the ryokan boasts an idyllic location beside the Amori River, surrounded by lush greenery and majestic mountains, offering a tranquil escape from daily life. It is conveniently located approximately 15 minutes by car or shuttle taxi from Kagoshima Airport. For those arriving by train, it's about 60 minutes from Kagoshima Chuo Station, involving a Shinkansen ride to Hayato Station followed by a 15-minute taxi or bus journey. While more accessible by car, free on-site parking is available. The surrounding area offers natural beauty and attractions like Kirishima Jingu Shrine, Kirishima Open Air Museum, and Kirishima Onsen market.
7. Value & Pricing
Despite an average room price of approximately $542-$576, which is higher than the Kirishima average, guests frequently emphasize the "exceptional value for money" and consider the experience "worth every penny." The ryokan often receives a perfect score of 10.0 for value. However, rates can be significantly higher during Japanese holidays, weekends, and peak seasons like spring and fall. Standard rates typically range from 21,000 to 52,500 yen per person for half-board.
8. Common Complaints
While generally glowing, a few minor points of criticism emerge. Some guests note that the ryokan is more easily accessible by car than by public transport. Room rates are significantly higher on weekends and during Japanese holidays. Mountain-side rooms, which are often cheaper, may not offer river views and instead face the road. While Wi-Fi is available, some guests have reported it can be slow. There is also a lack of nearby convenience stores, so guests might want to purchase necessities beforehand. Guests with tattoos are advised to contact the ryokan in advance to arrange for private bathing, ensuring their comfort. Additionally, children may incur extra charges, which some interpret as a measure to maintain a peaceful atmosphere for all guests.

Beautiful property overlooking water, very well designed rooms, interiors lovely; food is good though not sure deserving of top tablelog ranking. Best to get room with onsen and don’t miss private outdoor one next to waterside you can book as a guest. Marshmallows for guests a nice touch. Property isn’t completely enclosed though bit of walk outside to onsen areas. Also no gardens for post meal ...

Amazing, amazing experience! Do reserve plenty of time for the meals and onsen. Both are outstanding and exceed expectations. Real natural hot spring, private outdoor hot spring feels so good. The food is flavourful and healthy. Love the environment, the staff and the hotel decor as well.
Crème Brûlée
A hot spring inn located along the Amaguri River. The hot spring is a bicarbonate spring rich in metasilicic acid, a moisturizing ingredient. There are seven hot springs on the premises, and the bathtub is built right next to them, so you can always bathe in fresh water. The main building has 14 Japanese-style rooms, including those in the sukiya style, and the massive stone storehouse has 4 rooms...

An absolutely wonderful experience. From the ease of being pick up at the airport (with a very short ride to the facility) to most of the staff standing outside waving us goodbye, truly a place that goes above and beyond. For an American with very limited Japanese, they had plenty of staff who could communicate and explain everything. Food was very, very good and we enjoyed having different dinner...

Incredible!! It rained the whole time we were here and it was so atmospheric. Very stylish and pretty intimate setting. We emailed the hotel to get a taxi from the train station. We loved the little touches like the resting room with jazz playing and ice lollies, the s’mores station with liquor warming in a teapot.. the baths themselves were a little exposed to nature! But ladies were offered a co...

Never before have I experienced such an exciting hotel. Even though it is located in a quiet mountain area, you can feel the rich flow of the Amori River and the heartbeat of the earth. There are shared baths and open-air baths that can be reserved by the hour, but we recommend the rooms with open-air baths. For dinner and breakfast, you can fully enjoy the skills of the chef who prepares Kagoshi...
