Expert Review: Field Guide
Field Guide in Stowe, United States, a Michelin Key Selected property, offers a distinctive and appealing stay, blending a modern ski chalet aesthetic with a cozy, welcoming atmosphere. It generally receives positive feedback for its unique design, excellent location, and comfortable accommodations.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
Field Guide garners a strong "Very Good" rating with an average score of 8.5/10 from over 560 reviews on some platforms, and a "Wonderful" rating from Michelin Guide guests. Guests frequently describe the atmosphere as cozy, welcoming, and having a "millennial vibe" or "modern rustic flare."
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently praise several aspects of Field Guide:
- Design & Ambiance: The hotel impresses with its modern decor inspired by a traditional ski lodge, featuring "rustic-chic" interiors, reclaimed wood, and playful pops of color. The lobby, in particular, is noted as a sociable hub with a fireplace, vintage games, and comfortable seating areas.
- Location: Its fantastic, central location in Stowe is a major draw, being within walking distance to shops, restaurants, and cafes, and a short drive (10-15 minutes or via a free shuttle) to Stowe Mountain and ski slopes.
- Amenities: The year-round outdoor hot tub is a favorite amenity, perfect for relaxing after a day of activities, while a seasonal outdoor heated pool and a fire pit area for s'mores also enhance the guest experience. Complimentary parking and free Wi-Fi are also appreciated.
3. Room Quality
The rooms and suites at Field Guide are described as comfortable, clean, and stylish, featuring a "rustic-chic" or "modern rustic" design with punchy colors and unique decor like ceramic antlers or bird-print wallpaper. Rooms are well-equipped with amenities such as 40-inch LED Smart TVs with Apple TV, in-room iPads with local information, mini-fridges, coffeemakers, waffle kimono robes, and Lather toiletries. Some larger accommodations, including luxury suites and cottages, may offer extras like seating areas, gas fireplaces, or soaking tubs, with options for private entry and outdoor patios. Beds are generally found to be comfortable.
4. Dining Experience
Field Guide offers a complimentary breakfast, often described as a "tapas-style" or "continental" spread. Guests have praised the breakfast for being "delicious" and "changed daily," with a variety of fruits, pastries, and protein options like chia seed pudding, yogurt, and egg dishes. However, some guests have expressed disappointment regarding the breakfast, citing limited variety and quality, or items getting cold.
The hotel also features "Après Only," a bar and tasting room open Thursday through Sunday evenings, celebrating 80's nostalgia and classic Vermont ski culture, offering drinks and snacks like charcuterie, pretzels, and cake. There is no full-service restaurant for dinner at Field Guide itself, but numerous dining options are within walking distance in Stowe.
5. Service & Staff
Guest feedback highlights the staff as friendly, helpful, and accommodating. Concierge services are available, and the front desk can assist with arrangements.
6. Location & Accessibility
Located at 433 Mountain Road, Field Guide is centrally situated in the heart of downtown Stowe. This prime location allows for a 10-minute walk to shops, restaurants, and the Stowe Recreation Path. For skiing and mountain activities, Stowe Mountain Resort is approximately a 10-15 minute drive away, with a free shuttle service often available. Morrisville-Stowe State Airport is about a 13-minute drive.
7. Value & Pricing
Field Guide is generally considered a charming and stylish boutique hotel with what some consider affordable rates. Prices can vary significantly by season, with low season (July) seeing rates from around $131, while high season (October) can see prices rise considerably, averaging around $228 for weeknights and $217 for weekend nights. An amenity fee is included, covering breakfast, outdoor pool, hot tub, ski locker room, outdoor fire pits, parking, and guest Wi-Fi. While many find it a good value, one reviewer noted it as "way way overpriced" for their experience.

- Seasonal Pool: The outdoor pool is seasonal and closed during winter months.
- Limited Hot Water: In one instance, a guest reported a lack of hot water in the evening.
- Limited Front Desk Hours: Check-in closes at 8 PM, requiring guests arriving later to make arrangements in advance.

I feel completely catfished by the online photos of this property. For $330 a night, I expected a professional, comfortable stay; instead, I’ve stayed in one-star hotels that were better maintained than this. The "luxury" ends at the lobby. Our room door had visible light leaking through all four sides, which meant we heard every single footstep and whisper in the hallway. To make matters worse...

Likely wouldn’t stay here again. Decent, but leaves a lot to be desired other than the lounge areas. The hot tub is out of service. This isn’t advertised or disclosed when booking. They offer you to go to a neighboring hotel and use their amenities. Disappointing after a day of skiing. The pros: the first floor lounge areas had a chill mountain vibe. Easy to relax and appreciated the warm ...

We absolutely loved our stay at Field Guide Lodge! From the start, the check-in and check-out process was fast, easy, and stress-free. The rooms were extremely clean and cozy, and housekeeping did a fantastic job throughout our stay. The free breakfast felt like a warm, cooked Sunday morning spread and was the perfect way to start each day. We also loved the inviting common areas — there were ple...

We wanted to like this stay so very much. We have been to Stowe before and visited Field Guide for a fondue event. It was enchanting! This go around we were extremely disappointed. We did not receive room cleaning any of the days without requesting it directly, even after leaving out the “Service Room” sign. When we opened the stowaway bed the sheets had a long hair on them and there were chips ...

First, the location is a good spot. 10mins walk to the main Stowe downtown but there's restaurants and shops around it so not a bad place Second, we got the deluxe queen room. It was very beautiful. Third, the walls are very thin. I can hear my neighbor, someone walking down the halls, the band downstairs, and I woke up to the room upstairs who are walking too loud like they are wearing their shoe...

We got the bunk room for our girls weekend and it was wonderful. It was tight sharing one bathroom but we were able to fit 5 of us together which is what we wanted and we didn’t mind sharing beds. The beds were comfy, the room was clean, and they even left us yummy cookies! They checked in via text everyday making sure we didn’t need anything and to let us know about live music in the lobby bar. T...
