Expert Review: Faraway Martha's Vineyard
Faraway Martha's Vineyard, a Michelin Key One-Keys property, offers a blend of historic charm and modern boutique luxury in the heart of Edgartown. It occupies a site with a history dating back to 1742, previously known as the Kelley House Hotel, and underwent extensive renovations before reopening in 2023.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The general consensus for Faraway Martha's Vineyard is largely positive, with guests frequently describing their stays as "wonderful" and "excellent." It is celebrated for its stylish boutique vibe and comfortable accommodations. However, some guests have expressed mixed feelings regarding value for price, citing certain room conditions and amenities.
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently praise the hotel's fantastic and central location in Edgartown, offering easy access to shops, restaurants, and attractions. The design is often highlighted, with its "upscale bohemian design influenced by a fascinating backstory," mixing modern and esoteric elements, and featuring custom-made and restored furniture. Amenities such as the new pool and hot tub, free bicycle rentals, and welcoming atmosphere are also frequently mentioned as significant draws. The property also boasts exclusive guest amenities including a saltwater heated pool, jacuzzi, and fitness center.
3. Room Quality
The 58 guest rooms and suites, spread across a main building and six adjacent houses, are described as well-designed and comfortable. They feature soft beds with quality sheets, pillowtop beds, and premium bedding. The decor embraces a throwback-maritime style with modern touches, including turntables with vinyl records, lovely tasseled lamp shades, and period-appropriate architectural furnishings. Contemporary amenities include luxurious Byredo Gypsy Water bath products, a stocked minibar, and a nostalgic Victrola Bluetooth record player. Rooms also come with coffee/tea makers, bathrobes, premium digital channels, and free Wi-Fi. Suites can vary significantly in size, layout, and finishes, some offering private balconies with harbor views, full kitchens, and washer/dryers, making them suitable for extended stays or families. However, some guests have reported a damp smell in certain rooms upon entering, and occasional issues with cleanliness.
4. Dining Experience
Faraway Martha's Vineyard offers three distinct dining experiences. The historic Newes From America is an upscale pub with British and American influences, renowned for its New England seafood, sandwiches, and local craft beers, with some guests touting its fish and chips as among the best. The Pelican Club is a seasonal, sultry open-air sushi spot featuring fresh-caught sashimi, ceviches, and artisan cocktails. There is also a seasonal Snack Shack by the pool. While patrons generally rave about the carefully curated dining options and seasonal ingredients, some guests have noted that breakfast options were limited, and there were no coffee machines in the rooms or the hotel.
5. Service & Staff
The staff at Faraway Martha's Vineyard are frequently described as friendly, helpful, and accommodating. The general manager, Celso Moreira, is particularly noted for his warm and engaging presence. However, some guests have mentioned occasional confusion and inexperience among staff members, as well as delays in housekeeping services.
6. Location & Accessibility
The hotel boasts a prime and highly desirable location at 23 Kelly Street in Edgartown, just 0.1 miles from the town center. It is centrally located to shops, restaurants, and attractions, and is only steps away from the Edgartown Lighthouse, Lighthouse Beach, and Main Street. The terminal for the ferry to Chappaquiddick Island is also a short walk away. Faraway Martha's Vineyard is a 15-minute drive from Martha's Vineyard Airport (MVY). The hotel provides complimentary bicycles, making it easy for guests to explore the scenic Edgartown area. Free parking is available onsite, though it can be limited. The hotel is also wheelchair accessible.
7. Value & Pricing
Room rates at Faraway Martha's Vineyard can start from approximately $209, but prices vary significantly depending on the season and day of the week. The cheapest deals are generally found in December and April (low season), while August is the most expensive month with an average 188% rise in price. While many appreciate the overall experience, some reviews indicate dissatisfaction with the value for price, particularly concerning the condition of certain rooms and amenities.
8. Common Complaints
Recurring issues and criticisms from guests include a damp smell in some rooms, occasional cleanliness issues, and concerns about noise levels. Some guests have noted limited breakfast options and the absence of coffee machines in rooms or throughout the hotel. Delays in housekeeping services have also been mentioned. Additionally, rollaway beds are not available, and there is no elevator on the property.

Most beautiful lobby and a very attentive front desk crew. The entire hotel no matter what room you're in has the most amazing smell. The bath products were top notch and I've never seen a better stocked mini bar and snacks upon arrival. The decor was welcoming and stylish. Can't wait to come back when it's warmer to experience all the amenities.

We’ve been coming to the Vineyard both on and off season for 25 years. The Faraway is beautifully appointed both inside and out. Our suite had a beautiful view of the harbor and really comfortable couches. The location right in the heart of Edgartown village is convenient and fun for all ages. The lobby is funky opulence without being ostentatious. Nice cozy wine and treats hosted there nightly. T...

Let’s start with the positives. The location is great and the property is beautiful. However, that is where it ends. The service in this hotel is not equal to the price paid. Then there are the little details that don’t make sense e.g. why have plates and silverware in a room with no microwave?, why is ice so hard to obtain?, why isn’t there some sort of breakfast or coffee station. Our room was n...

Few experiences rival Faraway Martha’s Vineyard. The property is absolutely beautiful with touches of first class decor at every turn. The lobby is spectacular and the grounds and rooms match that level of design. It is easy to move about from the main building to the pool, the parking lot, the restaurant, coffee shop boutique, and the buildings where the rooms and suites are located. The locati...

Good luck sleeping if you’re not on top floor. The building is cheaply built. You’ll hear the people above you stomping like they have wooden legs it’s so loud. The AC and my white noise app were no match. You also hear toilets flushing very loudly. There was a big wad of previous guest’s hair in the shower drain. Yuck. The shower also leaked onto the floor somehow. The rug under the sofa was all ...
