Expert Review: Fairmont Royal York Hotel
The Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto, a distinguished Michelin Key Selected property, offers a blend of historic grandeur and modern luxury, making it a prominent landmark in the city's downtown core. Recent comprehensive reviews highlight its prime location, elegant design, and generally strong service, though some inconsistencies in room quality and value perceptions exist.
Overall Rating & Sentiment
The general consensus for the Fairmont Royal York is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing it as "amazing," "grand," and an "iconic landmark." The Michelin Guide rates the hotel highly for cleanliness (17.1/20) and overall experience (16.5/20) on its 20-point scale. Many see it as a "luxury castle hotel" offering a quintessential Toronto experience. However, some guests note that while it's a beautiful hotel, some aspects may not fully align with a five-star standard, especially when compared to newer luxury properties in the city.
Key Highlights
Guests consistently praise the Fairmont Royal York for its exceptional location and rich history. The hotel's grand lobby, often adorned with festive decorations during holidays, leaves a lasting impression. The recent "reimagining" of the lobby, rooms, dining venues, and Fairmont Gold experience has been well-received. The luxurious Fairmont Gold experience, offering private check-in and lounge access, is a significant draw for many. Amenities such as a 50-foot indoor swimming pool, health club, and various award-winning dining options are also key attractions.
Room Quality
Rooms at the Fairmont Royal York are generally described as spacious, clean, and modern, particularly those that have undergone recent renovations. Many offer views of the city, including partial lake views or glimpses of the CN Tower. Guests appreciate comfortable beds, Nespresso coffee machines, and kettles. However, some guests have noted that certain rooms, especially bathrooms, can be on the smaller side. There are also instances where older rooms might appear "tired" and not fully align with modern luxury expectations or online photos. Fairmont Gold Suites often feature a muted monochrome design with elegant gold accents, gleaming marble bathrooms, and large-sized Le Labo toiletries. A minor complaint in some suites was a lack of sufficient power outlets.
Dining Experience
The hotel boasts several notable dining establishments. REIGN is highlighted as a modern Canadian brasserie, while Clockwork Champagne & Cocktails is a popular spot for both drinks and afternoon tea. The Library Bar is frequently praised for its cozy ambiance, excellent service, drinks, and occasional live entertainment, making it a favorite for many guests. Room service is generally quick and the food is rated as excellent. The Fairmont Gold Lounge offers a decent breakfast selection, and guests in Gold Suites can enjoy unlimited ordering from the in-room dining menu for breakfast, including options like steak and eggs, Benedict, and pancakes. The hotel also utilizes a rooftop garden for fresh produce, contributing to a farm-to-table experience.
Service & Staff
Hospitality at the Fairmont Royal York generally receives high marks, with staff described as "wonderful," "excellent," "accommodating," and "friendly." Fairmont Gold concierges, in particular, are frequently commended for their exceptional service. There are, however, occasional reports of service inconsistencies, such as slow service in restaurants and issues with bar access for hotel guests when venues are fully booked.
Location & Accessibility
The hotel's location is a significant advantage, situated directly across from Union Station, Toronto's primary intermodal transportation hub. This provides excellent accessibility to public transport, including the UP Express for direct service to Toronto Pearson International Airport. Many major attractions are within walking distance, including the CN Tower, Rogers Centre, Ripley's Aquarium, Hockey Hall of Fame, and Scotiabank Arena. The hotel is also connected to Toronto's underground PATH system, offering convenient access to the city's core without needing to go outside, particularly beneficial during colder months. Valet parking is available, but it is noted as being quite expensive.
Value & Pricing
The Fairmont Royal York is considered a premium property, with nightly rates fluctuating significantly based on season and demand, ranging from approximately C$160 to over C$400. Recent data shows prices typically between C$246 and C$578. While many guests feel the experience justifies the cost, especially for the grandeur and location, some express concerns about it being overpriced, particularly if assigned an unrenovated room. The value proposition for the Fairmont Gold lounge, specifically its food offerings, has been noted by some as potentially lacking compared to other Fairmont properties or competitors in Toronto.
Common Complaints
Recurring criticisms include the presence of some older, "tired" rooms and small bathrooms that have not yet been renovated, which can lead to a disconnect between guest expectations and the hotel's luxury image. High valet parking fees are also a common point of dissatisfaction. Some guests have reported issues with Wi-Fi quality and finding hotel bars fully booked. Isolated incidents of slow restaurant service and one unconfirmed report of bugs in a bed have been mentioned, though the latter appears to be an anomaly amidst numerous positive reviews. Noise in the lobby area, especially during peak times, due to many people congregating and filming for social media, has also been noted.

Review for the bar in the lobby: Very nice staff - welcoming and courteous. Overall nice experience at their bar. They have wines, spirits, and you can also order food. The mixologist was superb - drinks were made just right. There were a variety of people (guests staying at the hotel/non-guests), all treated kindly. No one appeared to be rushed - my small group wasn't. I would recommend for ...

Wow! This hotel is a beauty! Overall we had an amazing time here. It is across the street from union station where you can access trains, subway, and buses. The hotel itself gives off a grande vibe with traditional architecture and design. Rooms are upgraded to match that vibe. The service was impeccable. I was pleasantly surprised. I have been to many hotels around the world - the major brands. B...

We have been staying at Fairmont Royal York for a few years now. Everyone is always so kinda and attentive making sure our stay is fantastic. From the greetings of the bell boys, to the familiar faces in the gold lounge - everything is always so well orchestrated. We want to give extra praise to Michael in the gold lounge reception. He is an outstanding person who truely cares about ppl, his work...

I stayed one night in a Deluxe King room and this was, without exaggeration, one of the most disappointing “5-star” experiences I’ve had. The walls are shockingly thin — not just minor noise, but full, crystal-clear conversations. I could hear everything from the room next door: their shower running, doors opening and closing, laughter, and even intimate moments. It genuinely felt like we were sh...

Rooms are clean and worrh it for the price they are charging. Housekeeping and their staffs are friendly, well trained and hard working. Even not a room attendant or Room Services are hospitable enough to grant my rrquest to have an extra water when I am about to leave and check out schedule. Congratulation to Housekeeping Management for a well trained accomodating staff. Good job and cant wait fo...

Stayed here 3 days thanks to my company. Pros: rooms are small but nice, fitness center is very clean and well equipped. Food for event is good. Location is highly convenient. Cons: sound proofing would be good to improve, I could hear all the conversations of my neighbors, could hear them cough and yawning. The fact that we can't use the fridge for personal purpose is outdated by 50 years.
