Expert Review: Ermitage Mont-Saint-Michel

Ermitage Mont-Saint-Michel, a Michelin Key Selected property, offers a luxurious and serene escape just a short distance from the iconic Mont-Saint-Michel. Praised for its personalized service, exquisite dining, and tranquil atmosphere, it stands out as a top choice for discerning travelers.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for Ermitage Mont-Saint-Michel is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing it as an "excellent boutique hotel" and highly recommending it. Many reviews highlight a "wonderful" and "exceptional" experience, cementing its reputation as a luxury 5-star establishment and even "the smallest five-star hotel in Europe".

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently laud the hotel for its personalized and attentive service, creating a welcoming and intimate atmosphere. The peaceful location, set back from the main road, allows for a quiet and luxurious experience while remaining conveniently close to Mont-Saint-Michel. The spacious and elegantly designed rooms, many with private balconies or terraces, are a major draw. The on-site restaurant, "La Table de l'Ermitage," receives significant praise for its gourmet regional cuisine. The hotel's charming Japanese garden and sun terrace also contribute to its allure.

3. Room Quality

The hotel features seven spacious and bright rooms and suites, designed with a sober yet elegant and warm ambiance, often described as "cozy" and "cocoon-like". Rooms are well-equipped with luxury amenities including air conditioning, complimentary Wi-Fi, a mini-bar, coffee maker, cable TV, and in-room safes. Guests can expect ultimate comfort with pillow-top mattresses and premium bedding. Large bathrooms typically include both a bath and/or shower, and are stocked with bathrobes, slippers, and eco-friendly toiletries. Most accommodations boast a private balcony or terrace with garden furniture, offering a tranquil space to relax. Soundproofing ensures a restful stay, contributing to the quiet atmosphere.

4. Dining Experience

The on-site restaurant, "La Table de l'Ermitage," is a significant highlight, renowned for its fine dining, regional cuisine, and elegant ambiance. The chef, Didier Gadois, focuses on fresh, local, and seasonal produce, with a strong emphasis on high-quality suppliers for ingredients like blue lobster, salt marsh lamb, scallops from Cancale, and acclaimed cheeses. Many guests describe their dinner as "spectacular," "amazing food and outstanding level of service," and "one of the best meals" they've had in France, rivaling Michelin-starred establishments.

Breakfast, served either in the elegant dining room or in the privacy of your suite (with a supplement), consists of fresh, local, and seasonal produce. Options include continental, American, buffet, and vegetarian choices, with a selection of savory dishes like local charcuterie and cheeses, and sweet items such as viennoiseries and various breads. Freshly squeezed fruit juices, coffees, and teas are also available. The croissants have even been hailed as "the very best in all of France".

5. Service & Staff

The service at Ermitage Mont-Saint-Michel consistently receives high praise for being personalized, attentive, and extremely friendly. Guests commend the staff for their professionalism and their dedication to meeting expectations. The concierge service is particularly noted as "fantastic and very knowledgeable," assisting with everything from organizing activities and cultural tours to transfers and restaurant bookings. The owner is also frequently mentioned for being very friendly and hands-on, ensuring guests receive individual attention due to the hotel's small size.

6. Location & Accessibility

Located in the village of Beauvoir, Ermitage Mont-Saint-Michel offers an ideal balance of proximity to the famous Mont-Saint-Michel and a peaceful retreat from its crowds. It is approximately 3.1 miles (4 km) from Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Guests appreciate the convenience of being a short 5-minute drive to the Mont-Saint-Michel parking lots.

The hotel provides free self-parking on site. While an airport shuttle service is available for an extra charge, the hotel's location is easily accessible by car, with recommendations for TGV to Rennes and then a rental car from Paris. The property also offers bicycle parking and bikes for hire, and is wheelchair accessible.

7. Value & Pricing

As a Michelin Key Selected and 5-star property, Ermitage Mont-Saint-Michel falls into the luxury category. While prices can vary, a double room is listed at approximately EUR 250, and a family room/suite at EUR 305 for 2026. Breakfast is an additional charge of around EUR 29 for adults. The city tax is EUR 3.85 per person per night. Guests generally find the experience to be worthwhile, though some restaurant reviews suggest the dining, while excellent, can be on the pricier side, especially with additional courses or drinks.

8. Common Complaints

While overwhelmingly positive, some minor criticisms have been noted. A few guests found the restaurant's food to be "just ok" for the price, or experienced longer waiting times due to insufficient staffing. One review mentioned a non-functioning air conditioning unit, leading to a hot room and noise when windows were opened to cool down. Another guest expressed disappointment when only a 3-course menu was available at dinner, contrary to expectations of more extensive options. It's also worth noting that as a small hotel with only seven rooms, it doesn't offer extensive amenities like a pool or spa.

We had the hotel to ourselves for the 2 nights we stayed at L’Ermitage, so our experience was extra special and the service incredibly intimate. Other travelers shouldn’t reasonably expect the same level of service, but you can rest assured that you will be well cared for and comfortable. My only caveat is the WiFi. It was spotty when we arrived and stopped working entirely the next day. If you re...

First of all, this is not a five star hotel by any measure. The hotel is tiny, barely has any staff on service at any given time, no spa, no pool, no gym, the air conditioning is a not a real air conditioning. We took a suite and the bedroom was not air conditioned, in the middle of the summer?! For 1000€ we expected something totally different. As we told the staff about the bedroom not having AC...

Our rooms were large (dated but comfy and with a terrace) and the guest experience was a 10! From. He kin to checkout we were catered to and barely had to ask for anything and we had it. Werner is amazing as is the Concierge. The res...

This fine hotel stands out in a sea of other establishments. The facility is tastefully decorated and exceptionally well kept. The beds (possibly Tempur-Pedic) were very comfortable and a special note of appreciation for the highest quality firm, feather pillows--a real difference maker when it comes to a good night of sleep. They have a lovely, well lit bar that oozes ambiance. The dinner was exc...

What a lovely surprise when my friend booked rooms at this jewel box of a hotel! We only stayed one night, but that was enough to experience the luxe and very comfortable "superior suite" and it's coziness and bath tub (relaxing!). The owners were very kind and attentive. We were there in the off season, and the only guests in the hotel that night. It was nice to have some local cakes, treats, and...
