Expert Review: Eight Hotel Portofino

Eight Hotel Portofino, a MICHELIN Guide Selected property, offers a luxurious and tranquil experience in the heart of Portofino, Italy. This boutique hotel, with its 17-20 elegantly appointed rooms, is celebrated for its exceptional service, prime location, and sophisticated design, consistently earning high praise from guests.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for Eight Hotel Portofino is overwhelmingly positive, with an "Excellent" rating of 8.7 out of 10 based on guest reviews. Guests frequently describe their stays as fantastic, excellent, and beautiful, highlighting a romantic atmosphere and a feeling of being warmly looked after. It is often perceived as a quiet haven offering a distinctively tranquil, away-from-it-all vibe, despite its close proximity to the bustling Piazzetta.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently laud the following aspects:

  • Service & Staff: The staff receives exceptional feedback, scoring 9.2 for satisfaction. They are consistently described as wonderful, fantastic, very friendly, attentive, relaxed, chatty, and extremely helpful. Many appreciate the personalized touches, such as a welcoming glass of prosecco and small sandwiches upon arrival, and the concierge's assistance with bookings and local information.
  • Location: The hotel's location is a significant draw, earning an 8.9 rating. It is centrally located, just a few hundred meters or a five-minute walk from Portofino's famous Piazzetta and main harbor, making it ideal for exploring on foot. This allows for easy access to the vibrant bay while providing a peaceful retreat.
  • Design & Ambiance: Housed in a charming yellow, three-floor building, the hotel fuses traditional elegance with contemporary accents. The design features hardwood floors and a sharp gray-and-beige color scheme in the rooms, with common areas characterized by dark tones. The hotel's gardens contribute to its serene atmosphere.
  • Amenities: Key amenities include free Wi-Fi, a spa with a sauna, Turkish bath/hammam, and a range of massages and facial treatments. There are also sun decks with loungers and hammocks for relaxation. The hotel also offers a shuttle service to its sister property at Paraggi Bay for beach access (at an additional cost).

3. Room Quality

The rooms are generally described as spacious, particularly for Italian standards, and feature a classy, modern design. They are equipped with comfortable beds, air conditioning, flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, minibars, and private bathrooms. Suites often include enormous bathrooms and private terraces. Bathrooms typically feature a bidet, separate toilet, shower, hairdryer, bath sheets, and complimentary toiletries. Recently renovated rooms offer brighter, more vibrant colors. However, some guests have expressed that certain rooms, especially standard ones, can feel small for the price, with one reviewer likening the size to "Paris standards." Isolated mentions of plumbing issues and half-showers also exist.

4. Dining Experience

A "fantastic" and "well-curated" complimentary buffet breakfast is a highlight, offering a wide selection of juices, fruits, pastries, and dairy products. Guests can enjoy breakfast in the breakfast room or the charming internal garden. The hotel also offers light lunch and casual dining options throughout the day, with limited room service available. While the breakfast is largely praised, one contrasting review found it to be "bad." A bar/lounge is available for evening drinks and relaxation.

5. Service & Staff

The service at Eight Hotel Portofino is consistently rated as outstanding, with staff receiving a high score of 9.2. Guests frequently commend the team for being welcoming, attentive, friendly, and highly efficient. From the front desk to housekeeping and dining, the staff's dedication to guest satisfaction is evident, with many reviewers noting they felt "warmly looked after" and that the service "exceeded expectations." The concierge is particularly helpful with local arrangements, such as boat tours and transportation schedules.

6. Location & Accessibility

The hotel's location is considered excellent, scoring 8.9. It is strategically positioned just a short walk (5 minutes) from Portofino's famous Piazzetta and Marina, offering convenient access to the town's attractions, shops, and restaurants. Despite its central position, the hotel maintains a tranquil atmosphere due to its setting amidst gardens. While Portofino itself is best explored on foot, the hotel offers complimentary private parking (subject to availability) and a shuttle service to Baia di Paraggi beach. Santa Margherita Ligure Train Station is a 10-minute drive away.

7. Value & Pricing

Eight Hotel Portofino operates in a high-end market, with room rates typically ranging from approximately $734 to $1,344 USD per night, and an average price around $1133 per room. While guests acknowledge it as a luxury experience, the value-for-money score stands at 7.9. Some guests have expressed that the hotel can feel "overpriced" for the size of the rooms or the scope of on-site amenities, especially when compared to other five-star properties in the region.

8. Common Complaints

Despite the high praise, a few recurring criticisms emerge:

  • Room Size: Some guests found the rooms to be smaller than anticipated for the price point and a five-star hotel, with terms like "tiny" being used.
  • Perceived Limited Amenities: A few reviews noted that the "spa" was more basic than expected (primarily a sauna and steam room), and that an advertised bar was actually located at a sister property. There was also a complaint about an overgrown or under-construction garden not being disclosed.
  • Inconsistent Breakfast Quality: While generally well-received, one review explicitly stated the breakfast was "bad."
  • Lack of Explicit Michelin Key Rating: Although recognized as a MICHELIN Guide Selected property, the specific number of Michelin Keys (one, two, or three) awarded to Eight Hotel Portofino is not explicitly stated in the publicly available information.

We had booked a 3-night stay but checked out after just one due to unacceptable hygiene conditions. The shower was moldy and visibly dirty, with extensive black mold under the bathtub. completely unacceptable, especially for a room costing nearly €800 per night. The bed and pillows were also uncomfortable and felt worn out. Several features in the room didn’t work properly. We reported all of thi...

This is by far the worst hotel we have ever stayed at. We paid $1700 per night for a room that did NOT have a shower. When we went to the front desk we were told there was nothing they could do except allow us to shower in their spa. The hotel front desk clerk was rude and acted like she was doing us a favor. Do NOT STAY THERE THE WORST PLACE AND OVERPRICED ANd SMELLED

It’s an absolute shocker that this hotel is part of Small Luxury Hotels. There’s nothing luxury about it except for the price. Room was tiny - one could barely access the left side of the bed. Bed mattress is extremely poor quality, you feel the springs. Bathroom is dirty, walls have badly made touch-ups all over the place, wardrobe doors are fitting for a hostel. They’ve seemingly updated an old ...

Good location, friendly and accommodating hotel stuff, good breakfast. They have a sister hotel with in Paraggi (6-8 min away, hotel shuttle takes you there and brings you back) with a sandy beach and as a hotel guest for a fee you can enjoy seaside and I highly recommend that. Room 10 review: Shower sides are open and water is spilling but there is only one foot towel so soak all the spilled wat...

The location is great, the personnel is very attentive. But you can hear your neighbor’s iPhone alarm iPhone ringing with 2 doors closed.. the doors are absolutely not soundproof, to the point that you are wondering if it is open! The room quality is so so (see pictures) the TV was not operable. It’s a good hotel but not a 5 star, not worth almost a 1000 euros a night!

A wonderful hotel with a very clean and comfortable room. A bit small compared to the other hotels we stayed at while in Italy. Great service and accommodation except for at the very end when the front desk didn't want to contact the Splendido to request transfer of our luggage. Was kind of odd. Ended up just walking our four bags down. About halfway the Splendido staff recognized us and took over...
