Expert Review: Dunton River Camp
Dunton River Camp, nestled in the picturesque alpine clearing of the Colorado Rockies in Dolores, United States, is a Michelin Key Selected property offering a luxurious "glamping" experience. This seasonal, all-inclusive retreat, open from June to mid-October, aims to immerse guests in nature without sacrificing comfort.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The general consensus for Dunton River Camp is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing it as "luxurious beautiful glamping" and "better than a 5 Star." Many appreciate the opportunity to disconnect from daily life and immerse themselves in nature. While some guests express concerns about the value for money given the high price point, the overall sentiment points towards a unique and memorable experience.
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently praise several aspects of Dunton River Camp:
- Scenery and Location: The "awe-inspiring beauty" of the untamed, 500-acre property is a major draw, with panoramic views of the San Juan Mountains and the Dolores River flowing just 20 feet from the tents. Falling asleep to the sound of the river is a frequently mentioned highlight.
- Service & Staff: The staff is often described as "kind, caring, and professional," going out of their way to ensure guests enjoy their stay and feel taken care of. Many appreciate the personalized and accommodating nature of the team.
- Comfort and Design of Tents: The luxurious canvas tents are a key feature, offering a blend of rustic charm and modern amenities.
- All-Inclusive Experience: The all-inclusive nature, covering meals and beverages (excluding a reserve list), is highly valued by guests.
- Activities: The camp provides easy access to a variety of activities such as hiking, mountain biking (two bikes are provided with each tent), fly fishing, yoga, and horseback riding. Guests can also use the sauna and cold plunge.
3. Room Quality
Dunton River Camp comprises eight luxurious safari-style canvas tents, each perched on a 640-square-foot wooden platform with an amply sized covered front porch. These tents are appointed with bespoke furnishings and nostalgic cast-iron gas stoves, exuding coziness. Accommodations are equipped with sumptuous king-sized beds, plush bedding, and spacious en-suite bathrooms featuring running hot and cold water, double vanities, six-foot soaking tubs with showers, and even towel warmers. Some tents also offer private outdoor copper bathtubs. Each tent also includes complimentary Wi-Fi and a telephone.
4. Dining Experience
Dining at Dunton River Camp is a significant highlight, with all meals and alcohol included in the nightly rate. Meals are often served family-style in the Farm House, a beautifully restored 19th-century building, or on its wrap-around deck. The culinary team focuses on farm-to-table meals, drawing inspiration from local flora, fauna, and indigenous culture, with no set menu. Chefs are noted for being happy to tailor-make meals for dietary restrictions or particular palates. The wine and spirit lists are extensive, featuring selections from around the globe, including their own Sutcliffe Vineyards wines, with options for wine pairings. Breakfasts are described as gourmet spreads with freshly squeezed juices, organic fruits, and fluffy pastries. Dinners are often outdoor cooking-focused with an open-air kitchen.
5. Service & Staff
The staff at Dunton River Camp consistently receives high praise for their friendliness, attentiveness, and accommodating nature. Guests report that staff members are genuinely caring and go out of their way to ensure a pleasant stay, sometimes even noticing specific needs (like a too-small bike) and proactively addressing them. Thoughtful touches, such as notes at turndown and providing electrolytes after a long ride, are also appreciated. While the service is often described as solid, with staff remembering preferences, some reviewers have noted inconsistencies in administrative aspects like booking activities and communication.
6. Location & Accessibility
Dunton River Camp is situated in a secluded, pastoral alpine clearing in the Colorado Rockies, roughly 32 miles outside of Telluride, near the Four Corners region. The property offers an "off-the-grid" feel, encouraging guests to disconnect, as there is no cell service, though Wi-Fi is available in the Farm House and tents. The camp is located just 20 feet from the West Fork of the Dolores River, providing stunning views of the San Juan Mountains. While remote, the beautiful scenery makes the journey worthwhile. The nearest airport is TEX, and transportation can be arranged for an additional charge. Guests have easy access to a variety of outdoor activities directly from the camp or can be driven to nearby trailheads.
7. Value & Pricing
Dunton River Camp is an all-inclusive luxury experience, with nightly rates covering all meals and beverages (excluding a reserve list), use of the sauna, and mountain bikes. Rates begin at approximately $2035 USD per night. While many guests find the experience exceptional, some reviews suggest that the value for money might not always be entirely justified given the high price point, especially when comparing it to other luxury ranches. However, the unique, immersive nature of the camp is often seen as a significant part of its value.
8. Common Complaints
While generally well-received, some guests have voiced a few recurring criticisms:
- Booking and Administrative Issues: Some guests have experienced problems with the booking process, including slow responses to inquiries, activities being unavailable or miscommunicated, and incorrect billing at checkout.
- Inconsistent Service Details: A few guests reported issues with daily services, such as inconsistent morning coffee delivery to tents and mediocre housekeeping, including towels not being replaced and used glasses not being removed.
- Remoteness and Activity Descriptions: One guest noted that while the location is beautiful, there was surprisingly little to do directly on the property beyond core activities, and some activity descriptions (e.g., horseback riding and winery tours) were misleading, leading to disappointment.
- Value for Money: Despite the luxury, some felt the cost per night was not entirely justified, especially considering some of the minor service inconsistencies.

Incredible place. Staff are on top of everything, our stay was wonderful. Typically the River Camp is less booked than the Hot Springs & we loved the seclusion and privacy. Food was amazing, chefs were lovely as was everything.

Camp is absolutely beautiful. Tents and bed are very comfortable. Food was delicious. We left well rested fed and relaxed, However ....the service left much to be desired. They definitely needed another staff member to assist at dinner ( though the server at dinner was probably the most capable and experienced of the entire weekend). One server was mixing drinks, serving dinner and taking c...

An absolutely beautiful place with luxurious tents! However... We were first of the season and they definitely weren't ready: no preference sheet, no handover between chefs, subpar comms to us regarding activities, simple things like hot chocolate missing, water in tents needed running for half hour to remove dirt from pipes, clock batteries were dead and they didn't replace them over 3 days of it...

Dunton offers an incredible experience. The tents are very comfy in beautiful settings. The food is amazing. Dunton River Camp offers a more intimate setting than the hot springs as there are only 8 tents so fewer guests.
