2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently laud De Plesman Hotel for several standout features:

  • Design & Ambiance: The hotel's unique Art Deco and mid-century modern design, curated by Nicemakers, is a major draw. Housed in a national monument from 1939, the former KLM headquarters retains historic elements like high ceilings and large windows, subtly referencing its aviation legacy while incorporating warm materials, art, and light. This creates a "photogenic place" with carefully considered details.
  • Service & Staff: The staff receives widespread acclaim for being "super friendly and helpful," "attentive," and providing "excellent service". Personalized touches, such as handwritten welcome cards, are frequently mentioned and greatly appreciated by guests.
  • Amenities: The hotel offers a range of excellent facilities, including a good gym, a garden, a terrace, a restaurant, a bar, and free WiFi throughout the property. Some rooms also include kitchenettes, adding to the convenience. Secure parking is available.
  • Location: Its strategic location between the city center and Scheveningen beach, with a tram stop directly outside, is highly valued for easy access to attractions.

3. Room Quality

The rooms at De Plesman Hotel are consistently described as "great," "very comfortable," and "clean". They feature modern interiors with subtle retro touches, high ceilings, and large windows that contribute to a spacious feel. Design elements include warm shades of brown, burnt orange, abstract patterns, and original artworks from the hotel's 500-strong collection.

Many rooms are well-appointed with amenities such as tea and coffee makers, free toiletries, flat-screen TVs with streaming capabilities, and comfortable mattresses. Some studios and suites are particularly noted for their spaciousness, mini-kitchens, sofa beds, and excellent sound and light insulation, making them ideal for families or longer stays. Bathrooms often include large bathtubs and separate rain showers.

4. Dining Experience

The hotel's dining options revolve around Restaurant Suus, named after Albert Plesman's wife, and the Albert Bar & Lounge.

  • Restaurant Suus: This modern restaurant serves "delicious modern brasserie cuisine" from breakfast through dinner. Dinner has been described as an "excellent 3-course dinner".
  • Breakfast: Guests generally praise the breakfast as "great" and "exceptional," offering a good variety of options, including continental and buffet styles with both hot and cold, sweet and savory dishes. However, one recurring minor criticism is the self-serve coffee machine, with some guests wishing for a barista-made coffee.
  • Albert Bar & Lounge: This welcoming space is perfect for morning coffee, evening drinks, and light bites, offering a selection of wines, Dutch beers, and classic cocktails.

5. Service & Staff

The hospitality at De Plesman Hotel is a major highlight, with staff frequently receiving "exceptional" ratings. Guests consistently commend their friendliness, helpfulness, and attentiveness. The staff are known to go "above and beyond" to ensure guest satisfaction and are passionate about the hotel's history, readily sharing details with curious guests. Personalized touches like handwritten welcome cards contribute significantly to the positive guest experience.

6. Location & Accessibility

De Plesman Hotel boasts an excellent location in The Hague, situated in the leafy Scheveningen district, perfectly balancing proximity to both the city center and the beach.

  • Attractions: It is a 6-minute walk from Madurodam and close to Scheveningen Beach (1.6 miles away). Other nearby attractions include Paleis Huis Ten Bosch, Museon, the Binnenhof & Ridderzaal, and the Peace Palace.
  • Transport: A tram stop is conveniently located "just outside" the hotel, providing easy access to both the city and the beach within 10-15 minutes from The Hague Central Station. For those arriving by car, private parking is available on-site for a fee. Rotterdam The Hague Airport is approximately 14 miles away. The hotel also offers bike rentals for local exploration.

7. Value & Pricing

Guests often find De Plesman Hotel to offer "great value for money," with its facilities also receiving high ratings. While specific pricing varies, rooms are typically noted to be within an inviting range of $151 to $200, making it a competitive choice for travelers seeking quality and comfort without excessive cost. There is a city tax of EUR 6.20 per person, per night, for guests 13 years and older. Flexible check-in and check-out options are available, sometimes with an additional charge.

8. Common Complaints

While overwhelmingly positive, some minor points of criticism have been noted by guests:

  • Room Size: A few guests have found some standard rooms to be "too small".
  • Coffee at Breakfast: As mentioned, the self-serve coffee machine at breakfast has been a slight disappointment for some who expected barista-quality coffee at a hotel of this caliber.
  • Dining Variety (for longer stays): One guest noted that the restaurant menu, while good, might lack sufficient variety for guests staying for an extended period.
  • Water Amenities: A guest mentioned the absence of complimentary bottled water or a vending machine, and noted the tap water of The Hague can be hard for making tea.
  • Accessibility for Luggage/Disabled Guests: One review suggested improvements to the entrance for better access for disabled guests and for handling luggage on wheels.

I was in The Hague for business and needed a hotel close by to the conference centre, so I was lucky to find this lovely hotel on the outer part of the city. I will start with the staff; from the reception to the breakfast room and cleaners, they are incredibly professional and helpful. The daily breakfast buffet is extensive and tasty, plus there is an à la carte option on Fridays for something ...

I just can’t not leave a review about this hotel - it’s absolutely amazing. It’s not just a place to stay, it really feels like a piece of art with an incredible story behind it. The fact that the building was constructed by Albert Plesman, the founder of KLM, and that it used to be the airline’s very first office is simply fascinating. Everything in the hotel is done perfectly: the interior with...

I love the minimal and ergonomic design, the careful details meant to make the visitors happy. The street side view is very nice. The breakfast is not over the top, but satisfying. And dinners at Suus are a delight. For my needs the location is perfect, but not central. Close to Madurodam and not too far from the beach.

Very helpful, friendly staff, stylish building with great breakfasts. Easily reached on the number 9 tram. The only minor gripe was the seperate toilet in our room which doesn't include a washbasin within it...unhygienic to touch door handles before you can wash your hands. Also the microwave was bizarrely high up and would be dangerous to use as hot food would tip all over you as it was above hea...
