Expert Review: Curtain Bluff - All Inclusive

Curtain Bluff - All Inclusive, located in St. John's, Antigua and Barbuda, stands as a distinguished Michelin Key One-Key property, consistently lauded for its classic Caribbean luxury, exceptional service, and serene atmosphere.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for Curtain Bluff is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently returning year after year, often making their stays a cherished annual tradition. The resort is described as a "strategic sanctuary for creative reset" and a place where guests feel genuinely welcomed and relaxed. It strikes a balance between sophistication and a laid-back, understated charm, likened to attending a large house party. Over 65% of guests are repeat visitors, a testament to its enduring appeal.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently praise Curtain Bluff for several standout features:

  • Exceptional Service: The staff's attentiveness, anticipation of needs without being intrusive, and long tenure (many for 20-40 years) create a familial and welcoming environment.
  • Stunning Location & Beaches: The resort's prime position on a peninsula offers two distinct private beaches: a calm, sheltered bay ideal for families and watersports, and a more exposed "Surf Beach" facing the Atlantic. All rooms and suites boast direct sea views.
  • Gourmet All-Inclusive Dining: Unlike typical all-inclusive resorts, Curtain Bluff is highly recommended for its superb, gourmet food and top-shelf alcohol.
  • Abundant Activities: A wide range of complimentary watersports (including waterskiing and scuba diving), four tennis courts, a squash court, a kids' club, and a spa ensure there's always something to do.
  • Refined Design & Atmosphere: Recent multi-million dollar renovations have instilled modern finishes while maintaining an effortless and classic Caribbean aesthetic. The atmosphere is often described as "laid back, understated, in short a joy".

3. Room Quality

The 72 rooms and suites are noted for being incredibly comfortable and well-furnished, with a traditional Caribbean style featuring rattan furnishings and a neutral palette accented with blues and greens. All accommodations offer direct sea views from private terraces or balconies, with ground-floor rooms providing direct beach access. Rooms feature enormous, super-comfy beds and vast marble bathrooms, often with complimentary Molton Brown toiletries. While rooms intentionally do not have televisions to encourage relaxation, robust and free Wi-Fi is available throughout the property. Recent renovations in 2023 included marble finishes to most suite bathrooms, and some suites, like the Grace Bay Suite, boast open-air living spaces, hammocks, and even raised plunge pools.

4. Dining Experience

Curtain Bluff is celebrated for its superb dining, distinguishing itself from typical all-inclusive offerings.

  • Breakfast: Served à la carte with white tablecloths and table service at The Tamarind Tree restaurant, featuring a mix of international favorites and local Antiguan cuisine. Room service breakfast is also available.
  • Lunch: A large buffet is served at the Sea Grape Restaurant on the calm beach, offering a vast array of fresh, daily-changing gourmet goodies, from rare steak and lobster salad to traditional Caribbean dishes. Casual attire is accepted, though a shirt is required.
  • Dinner: An à la carte five-course feast with a daily changing menu is available, meeting the standards of a classy fine-dining establishment. Dinner is served at both The Tamarind Tree and The Sea Grape, with reservations recommended for the latter. There is a dress code for dinner, with gentlemen required to wear long pants, collared shirts, and dress shoes.
  • Beverages: All drinks, including unlimited cocktails and top-shelf alcohol, are included. The resort boasts one of the finest wine cellars in the Caribbean, with a carefully curated collection, though some premium vintage wines are available at an additional cost. Afternoon tea is also a daily offering.

5. Service & Staff

The service at Curtain Bluff is consistently described as "spectacular" and a significant reason for the high rate of returning guests. The staff are noted as helpful, smiley, and eager to satisfy guests' whims, often providing thoughtful extras like iced water or refreshing melon on the beach. Many staff members have been with the resort for decades, fostering a sense of familiarity and genuine hospitality that makes guests feel like family. They are attentive without being overbearing and are highly praised for their consistency and dedication.

6. Location & Accessibility

Curtain Bluff is located on Old Road, on the secluded southern end of Antigua, about a 30-minute drive from V.C. Bird International Airport (ANU). The resort's peninsula location provides stunning views, including neighboring islands like St. Kitts, Nevis, Montserrat, and Redonda from the spa balcony. It is a tranquil area, devoid of typical party crowds, appealing to those seeking a "how to disappear completely" vibe. Transportation to the resort is often facilitated by a pre-arranged pick-up, and taxis can be arranged by the concierge for off-property excursions to places like English Harbour. While the property offers ground-floor rooms with direct beach access, guests with mobility issues should note that upper-floor suites and bluff rooms are not elevator accessible.

7. Value & Pricing

Curtain Bluff is positioned as a luxury all-inclusive, and its rates reflect this, generally being higher than most other resorts on the island. Deluxe rooms during high season can be around $1,200 per night, with junior suites reaching about $2,000 per night. However, the "all-inclusive" truly means no wallets are necessary for most expenses, covering all meals, drinks (excluding certain premium wines and cigars), and a vast array of complimentary watersports and land activities. To find better value, guests are advised to consider traveling during the off-season (April-July), when junior suite prices might drop to around $1,200. Length-of-stay discounts are also offered outside of peak seasons. Children under two stay free, while those between two and five incur a daily charge. It is also noted that gratuities are generally not expected or included in the price, adding to the all-inclusive value.

8. Common Complaints

While overwhelmingly positive, a few minor points are occasionally mentioned, though often framed as intentional choices contributing to the resort's ambiance:

  • No TVs in Rooms: Rooms are intentionally designed without televisions to encourage relaxation and engagement with the surroundings, though TV rooms are available.
  • Limited Off-Resort Culture: Guests looking for extensive local culture and nightlife immediately outside the resort may find options limited due to its secluded location.
  • Accessibility: Some upper-floor rooms and suites are not elevator accessible, which may be a consideration for guests with mobility issues.
  • Non-Alcoholic Options: One recent review suggested adding more diverse non-alcoholic options beyond virgin cocktails in mini-bars and beach bars.

I have been to this resort twice. In full disclosure, it was 20 years between trips. I didn’t see much change in the resort. The rooms were dated but in good conditions. The bathrooms are large and lovely. The grounds are very well kept. The beach is just okay. It appears bleak to me. I have been to many other islands and resorts that are much lovelier all around. The water isn’t as clear, n...

Beautiful location once inside and the rooms are immaculate. However……The food is the worst we have ever had. The drinks that are included don’t include any cocktails you might know but merely their ‘special blends’. Ice cream sundaes are scoops of ice cream with nothing else. No bananas or mangos (we are in Antigua!?). This might be ok for some people if you’re used to package holidays but if you...

We had to walk out of this hotel half way through our holiday. We found the manager and MD charmless. The hotel fell well below ( recently acquired) Relais Chateaux standards to our mind. It was the 3rd Relais Chateaux hotel we have visited this year and we usually stay at 5 or 6 of them every year. We chose it for the RC name and were sorely disappointed. The front desk was a place to avoid ...
