Château de la Resle, a distinguished One-Key Michelin property nestled in Montigny la Resle, France, offers a unique blend of historical charm and contemporary design, creating an intimate and luxurious escape in the heart of Burgundy.
Overall Rating & Sentiment
The general sentiment for Château de la Resle is overwhelmingly positive, with guests consistently praising its serene ambiance and distinctive aesthetic. The Michelin Guide itself awards it a high guest score of 19.2 out of 20, describing it as "a very special stay" and a "charming hotel to relax." Guests frequently highlight it as a "beautiful and peaceful place" with a "quiet tasteful ambiance" and excellent art, food, and amenities.
Key Highlights
Guests are particularly captivated by the château's identity as a genuine contemporary art and design showcase, curated by its Dutch owners, Johan and Pieter. The property seamlessly combines the romantic atmosphere of a 19th-century country manor with the plush comforts and visual style of a high-end modern design hotel. Key highlights include:
- Design & Art: A carefully curated collection of contemporary art, bespoke Dutch design pieces, and striking interiors.
- Amenities: A pristine outdoor swimming pool, an inviting spa with a sauna, hammam, and gym. Electric bikes are also available for rent to explore the surroundings.
- Secluded Location: Set on a hill overlooking the Montigny-la-Resle valley, surrounded by 800 hectares of forest, providing a very quiet and private experience.
- Personalized Experience: The atmosphere is described as a warm, personal, and comfortable "home away from home," a stark contrast to traditional hotels.
- Sustainability: The château is committed to ecological transition, using durable materials, natural insulation, energy-efficient systems, and sourcing local, organic products.
Room Quality
Château de la Resle features ten individually decorated rooms and suites, spread across the main château and renovated outbuildings like the farmhouse and gardener's cottage. The accommodations are noted for their sprawling, open, and uncluttered plans, allowing for an abundance of natural sunlight. Each room offers a unique design, blending rich hardwood antiques with avant-garde fixtures and contemporary art. Comfort is paramount, with rooms featuring comfortable beds (e.g., 160x200 or 180x200), minibars, Nespresso machines, and water boilers. Bathrooms are often spacious, some with open designs, and may include modern double showers or luxurious bathtubs designed by Patricia Urquiola, along with organic Être bath products.
Dining Experience
The dining experience at Château de la Resle is highly praised, particularly the breakfast. It's described as a "stylish buffet" of organic offerings, including homemade bread, fresh pastries, local honey, cereals, seasonal fruit, eggs, and cheese, accompanied by fresh coffee and Kusmi tea. For dinner, the hotel operates "La Table de la Resle," which focuses on a locavore table with an ever-shifting menu of free-range, organic, and locally sourced specialties, often featuring ingredients from their own gardens. Dinner is typically prepared by their chef and served exclusively for guests in the farmhouse building. It's important to note that dinner often requires advance booking and a minimum number of guests, especially outside the high season (June to September), when meals are offered more regularly. Gourmet platters are also available. Throughout the day, guests can enjoy snacks and drinks from two honesty bars, which often feature specially selected local Burgundy wines.
Service & Staff
Guests consistently highlight the friendly, informative, and non-intrusive service provided by the hosts, Johan and Pieter, and their dedicated team. They are known for being passionate about the château and the Burgundy region, offering guidance and assistance with reservations and local excursions. The approach is described as providing a maximum of privacy and intimacy in an easygoing atmosphere, rather than a traditional hotel experience with bell boys or night guardians. This personalized attention is a key aspect of the château's charm.
Location & Accessibility
Château de la Resle is situated on a tranquil hilltop overlooking the valley of Montigny-la-Resle, offering a quiet and secluded retreat. It is ideally located in the northern part of Burgundy, approximately 15 minutes from the renowned wine region of Chablis and 10-15 kilometers from the historic city of Auxerre. The château is about a two-hour drive south of Paris. The nearest airport is Paris Orly, roughly 90 minutes away by car. For those traveling by train, direct services run from Paris Bercy to Auxerre (about 1h45), where car hire is available. While transfers can be arranged, renting a car is highly recommended for guests to fully explore the surrounding landscape of wooded hills, rolling vineyards, and charming old towns. The area is less touristy, allowing for a more authentic experience of Burgundian life and proximity to UNESCO World Heritage Sites like Abbaye de Fontenay and various historic châteaux.
Value & Pricing
Château de la Resle is positioned as a luxury boutique property, and its pricing reflects the unique experience, design, and personalized service it offers. Room and suite rates generally range from approximately €225 to €425 or more per night. For instance, a "Room Chablis" starts at €225, while a "Suite Fontenay" can be around €375. The organic buffet breakfast is included in all room rates. The five-course tasting menu, when available, has been noted as "very affordable" at €45. Guests generally consider the experience to be well worth the cost, given the exclusivity, design, and high level of service.
Common Complaints
While overwhelmingly positive, some recurring points of feedback or limitations include:
- Dining Availability: Dinner is not served every night and often requires a minimum number of guests and advance booking, particularly outside of the high season (June to September). Lunch is generally not served, meaning guests need to make their own plans for midday meals.
- On-site Activities: While there is a pool, spa, and opportunities for lounging, some guests have noted limited clear trails for hiking directly on the property itself.
- Restrictions: The hotel typically has an "over-16s only" policy, making it unsuitable for families with younger children. Pets are also not allowed.
- Seasonal Closure: The château closes its doors annually from November 12 to May 1.
- Minimum Stays: A two-night minimum stay often applies on weekends during medium and high seasons.

Great escape for a long weekend close to Paris (just 1,5h drive without traffic). We stayed in the Vezelay suite in front of the pool! It was great, well designed with all equipments you can think of! The negative side of the hotel was the small flies that can be everywhere when it is a hot and no wind day! It is unavoidable which was super annoying specially the last day when we tried to go for j...

Booked through Mr and Mrs Smith. The chateau is absolutely beautiful, the owner Johan was incredibly friendly and went out of his way to ensure we had a perfect stay. The room we stayed in was extremely spacious and comfortable, and the dinner at the hotel was also excellent. Location is very near Chablis, so perfect for wine tasting / visiting vineyards etc. Would highly recommend!
