Expert Review: Castello di San Marco Charming Hotel & Spa

Castello di San Marco Charming Hotel & Spa, a Michelin Key-selected property in Calatabiano, Italy, consistently receives high praise for its enchanting atmosphere, exceptional service, and beautiful setting. Housed in an impressive 17th-century Baroque castle, the hotel offers a unique blend of historical grandeur and modern comfort, making for a memorable Sicilian escape.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus among guests is overwhelmingly positive, with many describing their stays as "wonderful" or "superb" and often expressing a desire to return. Review platforms frequently show ratings around 9.2 out of 10, highlighting excellent scores for staff, cleanliness, and facilities. Guests consistently laud the hotel as a unique luxury experience that feels like a fairy tale, offering a peaceful and serene environment.

2. Key Highlights

Guests are particularly captivated by the hotel's charm and unique design, which seamlessly blends historical architecture with modern amenities. The meticulously manicured gardens and orchard, along with the gorgeous and relaxing pool area, are frequently cited as key attractions. The outstanding Sicilian cuisine and the friendly, attentive, and professional staff also stand out as major highlights. The private beach proximity and serene ambiance further enhance the appeal of this idyllic property.

3. Room Quality

Castello di San Marco offers spacious and bright suites, each uniquely designed with an antique Sicilian style. Accommodations are distributed both within the old castle (housing some deluxe suites) and in low-lying buildings nestled within the extensive parkland and gardens. Many rooms feature ornate bed heads, plush furniture, individual balconies, and garden views. Junior Suites often come with the added luxury of a private garden. Bathrooms are described as original and ornate, sometimes featuring patterned sinks and even Jacuzzi baths with unique stone lion fixtures. While generally comfortable, one guest noted a "small and a bit squeaky" queen bed mattress and "not perfect maintenance of bathroom" in an otherwise magical experience.

4. Dining Experience

The dining experience at Castello di San Marco is highly praised, with "outstanding" Sicilian cuisine being a recurring theme. The hotel boasts two restaurants: Mastri Flavetta, a traditional Sicilian dining hall open for dinner seasonally, and Giardino di Pietra, which offers outdoor dining and a grill by the pool during summer. The breakfast is consistently described as delicious, plentiful, and served in a quaint courtyard setting, offering a wide variety of choices. Guests often consider meals at the hotel's restaurant a highlight, with food being artistically presented and sometimes accompanied by special touches like a unique limoncello.

5. Service & Staff

The service and staff receive exceptional feedback, frequently described as "amazing," "attentive," "friendly," "helpful," and "warm". Many guests highlight the staff's professionalism and their willingness to go "above and beyond" to ensure a comfortable and special stay. The Murabito family, who own and manage the hotel, are noted for their warm and welcoming hospitality, making guests feel at ease and at home.

6. Location & Accessibility

The hotel's location is a significant asset. It is situated in a 10-acre park on the coast of Calatabiano, offering a tranquil setting right by the Ionian Sea, with a private beach just 60 meters away. The property provides stunning views, including Mount Etna. While offering peace and quiet, the Castello di San Marco is conveniently located about 20 minutes' drive from the bustling town of Taormina. Catania Fontarossa Airport (CTA) is approximately a 45-minute drive, and the Giardini-Taormina train station is about 25 minutes away, making it reasonably accessible. Some guests noted that the location is "a little bit out in the middle of nowhere" if one prefers more immediate surrounding activity, but this is often seen as a benefit for those seeking tranquility.

7. Value & Pricing

While specific price ranges vary, the Castello di San Marco is generally considered to offer good value for a unique luxury hotel experience, with a price band indicated as €€€. Guests often feel the stay is "worth every dollar" given the exceptional grounds, facilities, and service. The inclusion of a delicious breakfast and amenities like free parking and Wi-Fi contribute to the perceived value.

8. Common Complaints

Recurring complaints are minimal. As mentioned previously, one review cited a "small and a bit squeaky" queen bed mattress and "not perfect maintenance of bathroom". Another minor point to note is that while the hotel offers a private beach, access might sometimes be paid, and umbrellas and sunbeds on the private beach are not included in the room rate from mid-June to mid-September. For those who prefer being in the heart of a bustling area, the hotel's secluded location could be seen as a minor drawback, though for many, it's a desired feature for peace and quiet.

We stayed there in 2023 on a two centre trip, Castello San Marco and Trapani. The former was a perfect base for the region (tourist’s hotspots like Taormina) but great to come back to at the end of the day. Restaurant was perfect, as were the breakfasts. Pool was fantastic. All in all, perfect.

We attended a wedding here, we spent the week of the wedding leading up to the event as guests, and absolutely loved every minute. The food, the staff, the pool, the quiet. A great place to spend a week if you’re visiting Taormina and you don’t wanna stay in town.

Rosario delivers refined, creative cocktails with precise technique and nice presentation. Flavours are balanced, thoughtful, and service very welcoming … Rosario explains each drink and highlights every cocktail like citrus zest and a vivid violet signature over crystal-clear ice. A nice historic bar, and a big stage for true bartendering craft!

Castello San Marco is the kind of hotel that draws you back again and again. Full of charm, character, and beauty, it sits in a breathtaking spot—nestled by the beach with magnificent views of Mount Etna. The dining is exceptional, the service polished and welcoming, and the rooms are both elegant and thoughtfully appointed. It’s an unforgettable place and returning feels inevitable.

Nice place but the violent food poising was not fun 🤢 Ordered the beef tartare which I believe is what caused it. (Told the hotel and they said they checked and no other guests reported it. So could have been a coincidence… but my girlfriend had a bit of it and also felt sick that night (not as much) But still kind of ruined my experience here. The food options were quite limited and there’s no...
