Expert Review: Casa Maria Luigia
Casa Maria Luigia, Modena: A Gastronomic and Artistic Sanctuary
Casa Maria Luigia, nestled in the serene Modenese countryside, stands as a three-Michelin-Key property, signifying an extraordinary stay that transcends traditional hospitality. Guests consistently describe it as an unforgettable experience, a "perfectly appointed country estate" and a "playground for the senses," masterfully curated by renowned chef Massimo Bottura and his wife Lara Gilmore.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The overall sentiment for Casa Maria Luigia is overwhelmingly positive, with guests often expressing a desire to extend their stays. It is lauded as a unique destination where every detail is meticulously planned, offering an intimate and welcoming atmosphere that feels like being a cherished guest in the Bottura home. The three Michelin Keys underscore its exceptional quality and dedication to hospitality.
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently praise several aspects that make Casa Maria Luigia truly stand out:
- Exceptional Service: The dedicated team is frequently highlighted for their remarkable service and warm hospitality, ensuring an intimate and personalized experience.
- Impeccable Design & Art: The 18th-century mansion features a stunning blend of modern and vintage aesthetics, adorned with the Bottura-Gilmore couple's personal art collection, including pieces by Ai Weiwei. Each room and common area showcases thoughtful design and bespoke details.
- Culinary Immersion: Beyond the acclaimed dining experience, guests appreciate the constant availability of delicious snacks and drinks in the open kitchen, often referred to as "raid the fridge," and the phenomenal breakfast.
- Unique Amenities: The estate boasts a swimming pool, a tennis court, and a fitness center that doubles as an art gallery. A music chamber with Massimo Bottura's extensive vinyl collection provides a unique opportunity for relaxation and enjoyment. An onsite Acetaia (balsamic vinegar cellar) is also a popular feature.
- Guaranteed Dining Access: A significant highlight for many is the guaranteed reservation at Francescana at Maria Luigia, offering iconic dishes from Osteria Francescana, which can be challenging to secure otherwise.
3. Room Quality
Casa Maria Luigia features 12 wonderfully furnished, cozy, and classy rooms, along with a penthouse and a three-bedroom cottage. Each room is uniquely styled with contemporary art, vintage furniture, and vibrant design elements. Guests are welcomed with local treats, and amenities like espresso, tea, and mini-bar items are complimentary. Room types vary, from the "Festina Lente" with its open-plan seating area and handcrafted ceramic tile bathroom to the "Bella Vita" rooms offering spacious bathrooms and high ceilings. The "Alcova Penthouse" includes a large bedroom with a private balcony and countryside views, and a marble bathroom. While generally praised, one minor criticism noted was the small size of the vanity in some Festina Lente bathrooms.
4. Dining Experience
The dining experience at Casa Maria Luigia is a cornerstone of its appeal:
- Francescana at Maria Luigia: This on-site restaurant offers a 9-course dinner menu showcasing some of the most iconic dishes previously served at Osteria Francescana. The experience is interactive and communal, featuring an open kitchen and storytelling about the origins of each dish. Dinner is typically priced around €450 per person, including wine pairing, and is not automatically included in the room rate.
- Breakfast: Described as "spectacular," "incredible," and "one-of-a-kind Emilian," breakfast includes a generous spread of freshly baked pastries, bread from their custom pizza oven, local delicacies like gnocco fritto, cotechino, aged Parmesan with balsamic drizzle, and perfectly brewed espresso and cappuccinos. It's inspired by the traditional "second breakfast" of local farmers.
- All-Day Snacks: Guests appreciate the availability of savory and sweet snacks, inspired by seasonal ingredients from the vegetable garden, accessible in the main kitchen throughout the day.
- Al Gatto Verde: There is also another restaurant on the property called Al Gatto Verde, run by Chef Jessica Rosval.
5. Service & Staff
The hospitality at Casa Maria Luigia is consistently lauded as outstanding. The staff is described as remarkably dedicated, enthusiastic, and authentic, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Guests often feel like they are staying in the Bottura's personal home, with staff sharing stories about the property, art, and the Emilia-Romagna region. Massimo Bottura himself sometimes makes appearances, interacting with guests, describing dishes, and taking photographs, further enhancing the personalized experience. Chef Jessica Rosval also receives high praise for her contributions to the culinary offerings.
6. Location & Accessibility
Casa Maria Luigia is a private estate located in San Damaso, approximately 15 to 20 minutes by car from the historic center of Modena. It is set amidst corn fields and fruit trees, offering a tranquil countryside escape. While not within walking distance of Modena, the hotel can arrange taxis, and guests often find having a car beneficial for exploring the region. The property is conveniently located near the Modena Sud exit of the A1 highway (10 minutes drive). The Modena Stazione Centrale train station is about a 20-minute drive away, and the nearest international airports are Bologna (40 minutes) and Milan (2 hours). For ultimate exclusivity, a private helicopter landing pad is also available. Beyond the hotel, nearby attractions include the Ferrari and Maserati museums, as well as local producers of Parmigiano Reggiano cheese and balsamic vinegar.
7. Value & Pricing
Staying at Casa Maria Luigia is considered a premium experience, with room rates starting from €600 per night. Doubles, including breakfast, start from €450. A minimum stay with dinner for two can cost upwards of €1,350 (approximately US$1,492). Despite the high price point, guests frequently emphasize that the comprehensive and unique nature of the stay, including the unparalleled dining and hospitality, makes it "sooo worth it" and a destination in itself.
8. Common Complaints
While overwhelmingly positive, a few minor points of feedback emerge:
- Distance from City Center: Its location outside Modena means a car or taxi is necessary for visits to the city, as it's not walkable.
- Bathroom Vanity Size: Some guests have noted that the bathroom vanity in certain room types, like the Festina Lente, can be small.
- Adult-Oriented Policy: While the hotel generally maintains an adult-oriented atmosphere (welcoming guests aged 12 and above), there have been isolated instances of guests bringing younger children, which occasionally disturbed the quiet for others.
- Limited Room Service: The hotel does not offer traditional à la carte room service, though guests have access to self-serve snacks and drinks in the communal kitchen.
- Dining Recommendations: Some guests suggest seeking independent local restaurant recommendations beyond those offered by the hotel, as staff might primarily suggest other Bottura-affiliated establishments.

Stayed here for two nights in late July. Amazing property, full of art and gorgeous design. Staff are attentive but cool and casual - perfect for the setting and a good fit for the type of stay you’ll have here. Our room had beautiful exposed beams, and a restored features which were subtly integrated into design. The pool, gardens and Massimo’s garage/gallery/gym are all lovely to spend time in. ...

Rarely you find a place of this caliber. Food is exceptional as expected but the entire place is refined , decorated with an elegant touch . We got lucky as Massimo Bottura stopped by and talk to us for 10 min and Lara was there ...
