Expert Review: Borgo Santo Pietro

Borgo Santo Pietro, a Michelin Three-Key property nestled in the heart of Chiusdino, Italy, offers an extraordinary and luxurious Tuscan experience. This 5-star Relais & Châteaux hotel is widely celebrated for its enchanting grounds, exquisite design, and farm-to-table culinary philosophy.

Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for Borgo Santo Pietro is overwhelmingly positive, with guests often describing their stays as "outstanding" and "pure magic". The property is lauded for its beautiful atmosphere, impeccable cleanliness, and excellent food. Despite some criticisms regarding service, many guests find the unique decor and array of activities contribute to a memorable and highly-rated experience.

Key Highlights

Guests consistently rave about several standout features of Borgo Santo Pietro:

  • Design & Ambiance: The hotel masterfully blends modern amenities with historic style, maintaining a sophisticated "country house chic" aesthetic with influences from French chateaux, English eccentricity, and Danish cool. The 13th-century main villa and its surrounding 210-acre estate are meticulously maintained, featuring ornamental gardens, meandering paths, and antique furnishings.
  • Sustainability & Farm-to-Table: A core highlight is the hotel's eco-conscious mission, striving for self-sufficiency through its 300-acre organic farm, vineyards, orchards, and animal farms. This dedication directly translates into the exceptional quality of ingredients used in its restaurants.
  • Amenities: The property boasts a gorgeous infinity pool with sweeping countryside views, a full-service spa utilizing on-site grown herbs and sheep milk, and a variety of activities such as cooking classes, guided estate tours, truffle hunting, and rental Vespas or a vintage Cinquecento car for exploration.

Room Quality

Borgo Santo Pietro features 20 to 22 individually styled rooms and suites, each reflecting a romantic countryside charm. Rooms are sumptuously appointed with luxury furnishings, high-end fabrics, handcrafted details, and often include antique furniture, rustic wood-beamed ceilings, and heavy crystal chandeliers. Bathrooms are luxurious, frequently featuring clawfoot tubs and nourishing Seed to Skin amenities, a skincare line developed on the estate. Some suites are particularly noteworthy, with Monet-esque frescoes, private gardens, and even private pools. While generally praised, one guest noted a partially see-through bathroom door in their villa.

Dining Experience

The culinary offerings are a significant draw, underpinned by the hotel's "farm-to-table" philosophy.

  • Saporium (Michelin-starred): Led by head chef Ariel Hagen, this fine-dining restaurant emphasizes inventive cooking with ingredients primarily sourced from the estate's organic gardens and farm. Dishes like pigeon with langoustine are meticulously prepared and delight in both presentation and flavor. Saporium also holds a Green Michelin Star for its sustainability efforts.
  • La Trattoria sull'Albero: This more casual restaurant is built around an ancient oak tree and offers classic Tuscan dishes, including excellent wood-fired pizza, carpaccio, and ricotta and spinach-stuffed agnolotti.
  • Breakfast: The gourmet breakfast spread, served in a beautiful dining area overlooking a manicured lawn, receives rave reviews. It's characterized by quality over quantity, with fresh, farm-sourced selections and a menu offering items like lemon-sugar crepes and flourless chocolate cake. The hotel also produces its own rose wine.

Service & Staff

Guest feedback on service is generally positive, with staff described as polite and attentive, particularly the waiters. Many guests highlight the exceptional service and personalized touches, such as finding a specific mouthwash for a guest before check-in. However, some recurring criticisms mention unhelpful or inexperienced staff, a slow kitchen (though often deemed worth the wait), and issues with mischarging and a less-than-apologetic attitude from the front desk in certain situations. Service is sometimes noted as not reaching "Aman-level."

Location & Accessibility

Borgo Santo Pietro is idyllically situated in the rolling Tuscan countryside, offering a serene and secluded retreat. It's considered a "destination hotel," ideal for those seeking relaxation and disconnection. While offering profound tranquility, it remains accessible, being less than an hour's drive from Siena. The nearby village of Chiusdino is a quaint spot worth exploring, housing the Seed to Skin boutique. The closest international airports are Florence (Firenze Peretola) and Pisa, both approximately 55 miles away, and transfers can be arranged.

Value & Pricing

Borgo Santo Pietro is undoubtedly a luxury property, reflected in its pricing. Guests often acknowledge paying a "hefty sum" but many consider the experience "worthy of the price tag," particularly for its memorable suites and overall ambiance. Average prices can range significantly, from around $977 per night. September is typically the most expensive month to stay, while October offers the cheapest rates. One review mentioned potential "hidden fees," advising guests to be diligent.

Common Complaints

While overwhelmingly positive, some recurring issues and criticisms include:

  • Inconsistent Service: Although often exceptional, some guests have reported instances of unhelpful or inexperienced staff, and issues with billing.
  • Slow Kitchen: The kitchen has been noted as slow at times, though many guests found the wait worthwhile for the quality of food.
  • Child-Friendly Activities: While some amenities exist for children, past guests have felt that the playground is better suited for older kids and a wider range of child-friendly activities are not always available, making it less ideal for families with very young children seeking constant entertainment.
  • Hidden Charges: One guest reported hidden fees, suggesting careful review of charges.
  • Horse Riding Experience: A specific activity, horse riding, received a mixed review, with one guest detailing a narrow trail with overgrown bushes and an inexperienced guide.

We stayed at Borgo Santo Pietro for my husband’s birthday in October. We booked the trip ages ago but they were awarded their 3 Michelin keys just a few weeks before we arrived. The hotel itself is absolutely stunning. The common spaces are cozy and welcoming and our room was absolutely insane. Wood burning fireplace, private pool and enormous stone bathtub. I do wish we were allowed to have the ...

We recently stayed at Borgo Santo Pietro and were truly impressed by the beauty of the estate. Riding bicycles around the grounds and exploring the gardens was a highlight, and the food was excellent. While the property itself is stunning and the overall experience memorable, the service did not always feel as polished or attentive as one might expect from a place of this caliber.

We’ll never forget our stay at Borgo - it was truly magical. Of our 3 stops in Italy on our honeymoon this was by far our favorite. We’ve been really looking forward to our stay at Borgo Santo Pietro, especially since the hotel restaurant, Trattoria Su’llalbero, is our favorite restaurant in Tuscany and one we constantly come back to. Unfortunately, we were very disappointed from the hotel itself. Borgo’s grounds are undoubtedly beautiful, probably more than any hotel in Tuscany, and the breakfast and cooking class are some of...

If you are undecided on whether to book this place, please read my review and run to book your stay before they sell out. With only 22 suites, this place is as exclusive as it gets. This was truly the most magical place I have ever been to. From the moment we arrived to the moment we left, everything about this place was absolutely perfect. We came here for our honeymoon, and they were kind enough...

My stay has taught me to only stick to renowned hotel names like Belmond or Aman. The amenities are very poor. My spa treatment was below expectations. The staff is a little rude at times. They even broke my luggage bag, did not apologize for it, and would not reply to my email when I contacted them to be compensated. Dont waste your money and time.
