Expert Review: Caravan by Habitas Agafay

Caravan by Habitas Agafay: A Desert Oasis of Luxury and Authentic Moroccan Charm

Caravan by Habitas Agafay in Marrakech stands out as a Michelin Key Selected property, consistently receiving "very good" to "exceptional" ratings from guests who praise its unique blend of luxurious desert living and authentic Moroccan hospitality. With an overall average score often around 8.4 out of 10 and many individual "perfect 10" ratings, it is widely regarded as an unforgettable escape into the Agafay Desert.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for Caravan by Habitas Agafay is overwhelmingly positive. Guests frequently describe it as an "amazing place" and a "perfect desert getaway spot" that often exceeds expectations. The sentiment is one of awe and deep satisfaction, with many expressing a desire to return.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently rave about several key aspects:

  • Exceptional Service: The staff's friendliness, helpfulness, and attentiveness are frequently lauded.
  • Stunning Location & Views: The camp's setting in the Agafay Desert, with its moon-like landscape and dramatic views of the Atlas Mountains, is a major draw.
  • Delicious Dining: The food receives high praise for its quality and flavor, offering both local and international options.
  • Engaging Activities: A wide array of activities, including yoga classes, film nights, camel rides, quad biking, and stargazing, contribute significantly to the guest experience.
  • Unique Design & Ambiance: The "hippie-chic" design, incorporating earthy textures, local artisan pieces, and a serene desert ambiance, is highly appreciated. The property also features elegant spa facilities, two outdoor swimming pools, and beautiful outdoor seating areas.

3. Room Quality

Accommodations at Caravan by Habitas Agafay are primarily "Berber-style tents" or "tented suites." These are described as spacious, comfortable, and beautifully decorated with local Moroccan linens, oversized Berber rugs, leather pouffes, and elegant lanterns. Many units feature private stone patios or decks offering spectacular views of the desert and mountains, especially at sunrise and sunset. For cooler evenings, guests appreciate the thoughtful touch of hot water bottles slipped under duvets.

However, some guests have noted a few points for improvement:

  • Rooms may lack natural light, making them appear dark.
  • The absence of traditional air conditioning or heating can lead to discomfort during extreme temperatures.
  • Some tents, despite the property being relatively new, have shown minor wear and tear, such as small gaps or holes.
  • The dry toilet system in some explorer tents can be an adjustment for some guests.
  • In-room Wi-Fi connectivity can be unreliable, especially in tents located further from the main camp areas.

4. Dining Experience

The camp's open-air restaurant, Olivar, is a culinary highlight. Guests consistently laud the "yummy," "delicious," and "superbly delicious" food, which focuses on luxurious, nourishing, and healthy Moroccan and international cuisines. The restaurant caters to various dietary needs, offering vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and dairy-free options.

Breakfasts are described as amazing, featuring continental, à la carte, and local specialties, including fresh fruit smoothies, baked breads, waffles, fruit bowls, and confit-tomato quiche. Dinner provides a romantic setting with traditional Moroccan fare like tagines, spiced fish, cheese tacos, and decadent desserts such as chocolate pastilla and traditional Moroccan pastries. A poolside snack bar is also available. While the food quality is highly praised, some guests find the dining options to be on the expensive side.

5. Service & Staff

The service and staff at Caravan by Habitas Agafay are consistently cited as a standout feature. Reviews frequently highlight the team as "exceptional," "friendly," "super helpful," and "accommodating," providing excellent advice and recommendations. Guests appreciate the warmth and genuine care, noting that hospitality at Caravan is perceived as an "art form," with personalized welcome rituals and bespoke excursions tailored to individual preferences.

6. Location & Accessibility

Caravan by Habitas Agafay is nestled in the Agafay Desert, offering a secluded "desert mirage" just 45 minutes from downtown Marrakech and approximately 15-24 miles from Marrakech-Menara Airport. This location provides a profound sense of off-grid isolation and tranquility, with expansive, unspoiled views of the rocky dunes and the majestic Atlas Mountains. Despite its remote feel, the camp is relatively easy to access and is not far from the main road, though guests should be aware that other camps are also present in the vicinity.

7. Value & Pricing

While the experience at Caravan by Habitas Agafay is generally considered exceptional, some guests note that it comes at a significant cost. While rates typically include breakfast and a daily schedule of on-site activities, a city tax is applied per person per night. Some reviews suggest that while the experience is enjoyable, it can be "expensive for what you get," particularly when considering certain room conditions or occasional service inconsistencies.

8. Common Complaints

Despite the overwhelmingly positive feedback, a few recurring criticisms emerge:

  • Temperature Control in Rooms: The lack of air conditioning or heating can be a notable issue, particularly during the peak of summer or colder winter nights.
  • Inconsistent Hot Water: Hot water, powered by solar panels, can sometimes be patchy.
  • Room Condition and Design: Some guests have mentioned minor maintenance issues in the tents (e.g., small gaps) and the non-standard toilet seats. The dark interior of the tents due to limited natural light has also been mentioned.
  • Wi-Fi Connectivity: In-room Wi-Fi can be unreliable, especially in accommodations located further from the main facilities.
  • Pricing: While food is excellent, its cost is sometimes highlighted as high.
  • Service Inconsistencies (Rare): During exceptionally busy periods like New Year's, some guests reported minor lapses in service fundamentals, such as inconsistent water provisions or delayed room servicing.

This desert camp is beautiful. The views, amenities, and food is all outstanding, and this experience feels unique and high end. However, there are a few things that I would warn other about. First, the food is incredible but expensive. Each meal is about $25 and a water bottle is about $4. To be clear, the quality is worth it but you are beholden to these options, as there is nothing else around ...

A once in a lifetime experience. My friend and I booked a Desert Lodge for 5 nights at Caravan Agafay and we truly had an unforgettable trip! Everyone at the camp is incredibly welcoming and made us feel right at home. There are lots of activities on offer and the team were very accommodating for our schedule. We did camel riding, quad biking, hot air balloons, horse riding and a massage - all we...

Absolutely terrible experience – avoid at all costs This place is massively overpriced for what it offers. Prices are exorbitant, completely unjustified, and clearly targeting tourists who don’t know better. But the real disaster is the reception staff and the two so-called “managers.” They are rude, aggressive, badly educated, and shockingly unprofessional. No sense of hospitality whatsoever. T...

Caravan by Habitas Agafay was our 3rd Habitas experiences. We enjoyed a lot our stay in Namibia as well as in Bacalar. I will go straight to the point : Agafay was our worst Habitas experiences ever, and surely one of the worst in such hotel category. Here are the reasons why : We arrived on Dec 30th late evening. We noticed at that time that water in the shower and the sink was not hot in the roo...

Stayed at Agafai Caravan by Habitas — awesome spot! Excellent, super friendly service and stunning views. Busy enough to have a nice buzz but not packed like a resort. You get two pools and a great menu. I saw some low-star reviews, but they don’t make sense — it’s a desert camp, not a hotel. Of course there’s sand and dust! Way above expectations.

We had a nice stay as a family of 5, the place was really beautiful and definitely worth an experience. Great improvement was the free water in the rooms. Also the Yoga was complementary for the habitas guests which we really enjoyed. The food was perfect! Maybe service at the pool would be an improvement for the future and the toilets in the tents takes some getting used to. Also mails we wrote b...
