Expert Review: Cambridge Beaches Resort and Spa
Cambridge Beaches Resort and Spa in Sandys, Bermuda, a Michelin Key Selected property, is consistently praised as a luxurious and tranquil retreat. Guests frequently highlight its stunning location, exceptional service, and beautiful cottage-style accommodations, though some minor areas for improvement have been noted.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The overall sentiment for Cambridge Beaches Resort and Spa is overwhelmingly positive, often described as "superb" and "outstanding." On Booking.com, it holds an "Excellent" rating of 8.7 based on numerous reviews, with many guests awarding scores of 9 or 10. The resort is celebrated for providing a peaceful and memorable escape, often exceeding guest expectations for a luxurious stay.
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently laud several aspects of Cambridge Beaches:
- Location: Situated on a private 23-acre peninsula at Bermuda's westernmost tip, the resort boasts stunning ocean views, pristine pink sand beaches, and idyllic sunsets. Its secluded nature offers a quiet, rejuvenating, and distraction-free environment.
- Service: The staff is frequently described as friendly, helpful, and accommodating, with particular praise for the restaurant and beach service teams. The resort fosters a philosophy of treating guests like family.
- Amenities: The resort offers four private beaches, two coves, and two pools (including an infinity-edge pool overlooking Mangrove Bay). A full-service Ocean Spa features an indoor pool, hot tub, sauna, and steam rooms. Other amenities include a watersports center, tennis court, putting green, croquet lawn, fitness center, and bicycle/scooter rentals. Golf cart transport is available around the expansive property.
- Design: With architecture dating back to 1663, the resort maintains a classic Bermudian charm and an elegant, picturesque cottage-style retreat aesthetic.
3. Room Quality
Cambridge Beaches features 85 to 86 luxurious accommodations, predominantly private cottages, each offering a private entrance, dedicated outdoor seating area, and breathtaking water views. Rooms are generally described as very comfortable and luxurious, featuring tropical décor, 300-thread-count sheets, flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and Nespresso machines. Large marble bathrooms often include double vanities, Jacuzzi tubs, separate showers, slippers, robes, and high-end Molton Brown bath amenities. Some higher-tier suites and cottages offer expansive floor plans, fireplaces, private gardens, or even private infinity-edge pools. While the Bermudian style is appreciated, some guests have noted that fittings and fixtures in certain areas appear "slightly 'tired'" and could benefit from updating.
4. Dining Experience
Dining at Cambridge Beaches Resort and Spa is a significant highlight, consistently receiving praise for its "superb" and "amazing" food. The resort boasts three to four waterfront restaurants offering fresh, local dishes:
- Breezes: A guest favorite for its outdoor, on-the-water setting, diverse menu, and family-friendly options including a kids' menu.
- Pastel: Located by the outdoor pool, it serves casual fare for lunch and is often the source for room service.
- Shoreline: The breakfast restaurant, praised for its delicious and varied offerings.
- Sunken Harbor Club: A dinner-only establishment requiring reservations, known for its resort casual dress code and specialty cocktails.
While the food quality is high, some guests have expressed minor complaints about the limited operating hours of some restaurants and the automatic 17% gratuity applied to all food and beverage, including pickup orders.
5. Service & Staff
The resort's staff generally receives high marks for their "friendly and helpful" demeanor and "warm hospitality." Many guests have shared positive experiences regarding the attentive restaurant staff and efficient beach service. The front desk has also been commended for its kindness and flexibility, particularly during unforeseen travel disruptions. Cambridge Beaches prides itself on treating guests like family, a sentiment echoed in many reviews. However, a small number of guests have reported instances of staff being less warm or somewhat blunt.
6. Location & Accessibility
Cambridge Beaches is nestled on a private peninsula in Sandys Parish, Bermuda, known for its tranquil and private setting, offering some of the best sunset views on the island. This secluded location, while peaceful, means it is approximately a 45-minute taxi ride from the airport. Guests note that there are very few dining options or attractions within walking distance outside the resort, and taxi fares for exploring the island can be expensive. To mitigate this, the resort offers a complimentary ferry service to downtown Hamilton between April and October, and moped rentals are available on-site. It's important to note that due to its natural landscape and historic design, Cambridge Beaches is not ADA accessible, lacking features like wheelchair ramps and elevators.
7. Value & Pricing
Cambridge Beaches Resort and Spa is positioned as a luxury property, reflected in its pricing, which is among the higher end on the island. Room rates can average around $677 per night, though some sources indicate prices closer to $339 per night, which can be seen as competitive or even cheaper than the average for 4-star hotels in Sandys. Many guests acknowledge the cost but deem it a "worthwhile investment" given the "fantastic service" and overall high-quality experience. The inclusion of a 17% gratuity on all food and beverage is an additional cost guests should be aware of.
8. Common Complaints
Despite its many positive attributes, some recurring criticisms include:
- Dated Fixtures: A few guests have mentioned that certain fixtures and fittings, such as taps, sanitary ware, and air conditioning units, appear "slightly 'tired'" and could use updating to match the resort's luxury standard.
- Inconsistent Staff Service: While most staff are highly praised, a minority have been described as "blunt" or lacking in warmth.
- Limited Free Water: Unlike some other luxury hotels, complimentary bottled drinking water is not provided in rooms and must be ordered through room service at an additional cost.
- Dining Schedule: Some guests found the operating hours for restaurants to be limited, which occasionally posed a challenge for their dining plans.
- Isolation and Transport Costs: The resort's secluded location means that exploring off-site attractions often requires expensive taxi rides.
- Maintenance Issues: Occasional minor issues like missing light bulbs or unclean windows have been reported. One guest experienced pool and restaurant closures due to renovations during their stay, impacting their experience.
- Beach Cleanliness: One review noted finding significant amounts of glass on the beaches, with staff appearing unconcerned when notified.

I had a great trip overall and genuinely enjoyed our time here. We visited during the off-season, which likely influenced some aspects of our experience, but we still wanted to share feedback that may help future guests. The property felt more like a hotel than a full resort experience. The biggest challenge was the internet, which was unreliable and unstable throughout our stay. In today’s worl...

I have not yet been home for 24 hours but couldn’t wait to write a review for Cambridge Beaches. My husband and I were looking for a place to enjoy our first trip to Bermuda, and since we were traveling with our infant son, we wanted somewhere we wouldn’t have to leave for dining/things to do. Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted and offered a welcome drink before being driven to our room in a go...

A gracious and old school resort of individual cottages, cabanas, semi-detached flats and rooms on King’s Point on the west end in Somerset Parish. The restaurant/pub “Sunken Harbor”, has exemplary food and incredibly attentive service. Although scooters are available for hire, I used a bus pass to walk to the stops in Watford, about a :15 walk. Hamilton is about a :45 ride, the Dockyard around :1...

What a wonderful spot! Kind, attentive staff. Beautiful rooms. A uniquely Bermudan atmosphere, from the architecture to the food to the beautifully maintained grounds. Top notch and professional spa. If you want a generic Marriott with a water slide and all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet, go elsewhere. If you are fleeing such accommodations, book at Cambridge. We came for our honeymoon and loved eve...

We had a lovely stay at this beautiful resort. Our room had nice views, a comfortable bed and a nice functional bathroom i.e. pretty much everything you would want. We dined at The Sunken Harbour and had a lovely hearty meal. Breakfasts on the outdoor terrace are a perfect way to start the day. It can get busy, so early dining is recommended. The hotel beach was surprisingly quiet which was o...

The rooms by the water are spacious with a sitting area and deck to enjoy the views. The washroom boasted a large soaker tub but took hours to drain. A nice beach to walk but it’s short. Staff were either friendly or unmotivated when ordering. A 10 minute walk to the grocery store if you wanted something to snack on. Restaurant in the resort was pricey, as were drinks.
