Expert Review: BULL Burford
BULL Burford, a distinguished Michelin Key One-Key property, offers a unique and luxurious "anti-hotel" experience in the heart of the picturesque Cotswolds. This renovated Grade II listed 16th-century coaching inn seamlessly blends historic charm with a decidedly modern, art-filled interior, attracting guests seeking a sophisticated yet relaxed escape.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
BULL Burford garners overwhelmingly positive sentiment, consistently described as "exceptional," "beautiful," and a "stunning boutique hotel." It holds an average rating of 8.7/10 based on numerous verified reviews. Guests frequently praise its cozy atmosphere, cleanliness, and friendly service. The Michelin Guide itself describes it as a "very special stay," acknowledging its cool, designer edge and curiously subversive appeal. The hotel aims to foster "connection and creativity," encouraging guests to integrate rather than isolate.
2. Key Highlights
Guests are particularly captivated by BULL Burford's distinctive design and art collection, featuring an eclectic mix of antique furniture alongside works by renowned artists such as Banksy, Dalí, Damien Hirst, Bacon, Warhol, and Basquiat, displayed casually throughout the property. The interiors boast neutral and slubby colors, tactile bouclé sofas, and unique elements like a marble bar top. The dining experience is a major draw, with multiple acclaimed restaurants offering diverse culinary journeys. The attentive and friendly service consistently receives high praise. Its prime location on Burford's charming high street is also a significant highlight, offering easy access to the town's attractions and the wider Cotswolds.
3. Room Quality
The hotel features 18 "beautifully appointed" and "luxuriously-appointed" rooms and suites, each with a unique character. The design emphasizes a "pared back, grown up luxe" aesthetic, with limewashed walls in earthy tones or deep blues, complemented by comforting linens. All rooms are air-conditioned and include private bathrooms with bathrobes and complimentary toiletries, along with a work desk and tea/coffee making facilities. A notable feature (or lack thereof, depending on preference) is the absence of televisions in the rooms, a deliberate choice to encourage digital detox; some rooms even provide a harmonica for entertainment instead. Guests also appreciate the complimentary pre-mixed negronis found on drinks trolleys in their rooms. Certain ground-floor rooms are designated as dog-friendly.
4. Dining Experience
BULL Burford offers an exceptional and varied dining landscape with several distinct restaurants:
- Horn: The hotel's signature restaurant, serving modern European cuisine inspired by local ingredients and global influences, led by Head Chef Oli Durnford.
- Wild: An intimate, 11-course immersive tasting journey where dishes are cooked over an open fire in a sunken courtyard. This restaurant has been recognized among the top 100 in the UK by SquareMeal.
- Sl'ice: A full-service pizza and gelato restaurant.
- Hiro: An 18-seat, omakase-inspired private dining room for elegant gatherings.
Breakfast, available à la carte and including vegetarian options, is highly rated by guests, scoring an 8.5. Reviewers consistently describe the food as "delicious" and "exceptional", with some noting it offers "Soho House chic twisted with modern Brit cuisine". The hotel also features various bars offering expertly crafted cocktails.
5. Service & Staff
The service at BULL Burford generally receives glowing reviews, with staff frequently described as "amazing," "attentive," "friendly," and "helpful". The service is often noted as "smart but unstuffy". Guests have highlighted instances of staff going "out of their way," such as leaving personalized birthday cards. However, some isolated criticisms mention unhelpful or slow staff, and issues with rooms not being properly cleaned or tea/coffee facilities not being replenished during a stay.
6. Location & Accessibility
BULL Burford boasts an "excellent" location right on the high street of Burford, often referred to as "the Gateway to the Cotswolds" and one of its most beautiful towns. The town itself offers a delightful experience with its boutiques, independent shops, cafés, and historical landmarks like the Church of St John the Baptist and The Tolsey Museum. The hotel serves as an ideal base for exploring popular Cotswolds destinations such as Stow-on-the-Wold and Bourton-on-the-Water (both within a half-hour drive), and the city of Oxford (40 minutes away). Nearby attractions also include Blenheim Palace and Cotswold Water Park.
While the location is superb, parking can be a challenge, with no on-site parking available. Guests are directed to Guildenford Car Park, a short walk away, or advised to seek limited street parking. For those arriving by train, the nearest stations are Charlbury and Shipton, requiring a short drive or taxi. The hotel does offer a convenient "Bull Defender Pick-Up Service" from these stations.
7. Value & Pricing
As a Michelin Key One-Key property, BULL Burford offers a premium luxury experience. Room rates typically range from around £210 for a "Cosy Room" to £430 for a "Bullocks suite". Average prices on Kayak range from approximately $303 for a weeknight to $449 for a weekend night, with the lowest rates usually found in January and April. While some guests found the final bill to be higher than anticipated due to VAT being added, many consider the experience "worth every penny". The hotel is often positioned as a "fabulous option for couples wanting a grown-up luxe experience without the bonkers price tag of other chichi Cotswolds options". Breakfast is sometimes included in the booking.
8. Common Complaints
Several recurring issues have been noted by guests:
- No Televisions in Rooms: This is the most consistent complaint, though it is a deliberate design choice for a "digital detox" experience.
- Parking Difficulties: The lack of on-site parking and the tricky nature of finding spaces, including instances of the recommended car park flooding, is a frequent criticism.
- Inconsistent Service: A minority of guests reported issues with staff attentiveness, room cleaning standards, or replenishment of in-room facilities.
- Breakfast Cost/Inclusion: Some guests were surprised that breakfast was not included in their rate or found it to be pricey.
- VAT Clarity: Occasional feedback suggests that the addition of VAT to the bill was not always clear during the booking process.
- Lack of Spa/Gym: The hotel does not feature a spa or gym, which may be a deal-breaker for some.
- Accessibility: Due to its historic nature, the building may pose challenges for wheelchair users, with only one ground-floor bedroom available.
- Noise in "The Drunk Tank" Room: Guests staying in this specific room may experience noise or light disturbances as it is located above the bar.

Bull Burford-Cotswolds 5* on a whole different level! We recently stayed at The Bull Burford for Valentine’s Day, and it was nothing short of exceptional. The 7-course Valentine’s tasting menu curated by Head Chef Oliver Durnford, alongside fellow chef Ash, was absolutely off the hook. Oliver & Ash personally came to my table to make sure my dining experience was going according to plan……. Servic...

What a great place . Lovely decor and ambiance from as soon as you walk in (you can tell a lot of thought has gone into to it). Sat at the bar and had a beer and a cocktail. Barman Jake was very knowledgeable and excellent creator of off menu cocktails- just ask! Then we had an amazing experience with Jack , Leanne and super chef Ben in Wild. Visited the Bull on a Sunday afternoon for their roast dinner. Upon arrival, we were really impressed with the place! Brilliant ambiance and welcoming staff… We paid £36 for a roast beef meal, which came with additional cauliflower cheese and some appetisers free of charge. Unfortunately the meals were at room temp, which when you’re paying that money for a dinner you expect it to be hot! The help...

Myself and my partner went to the “Wild” restaurant, headed by chef Ben Chamberlain. The food was incredible, one of the best meals we have ever had. The flavours that he uses is like nothing we have tried before. Above all, the service was nothing short of exceptional. Leigh Ann and Jake were so attentive and personable. We would go back for the service alone. We also have to give a special shou...
