Borgo San Felice Resort: A Michelin Two-Key Tuscan Retreat

Borgo San Felice Resort, nestled in the picturesque Chianti hills of Castelnuovo Berardenga, Italy, offers an enchanting and luxurious experience, earning it a prestigious Michelin Two-Keys rating. Guests consistently praise the resort for its stunning setting, exceptional service, and authentic Tuscan charm, making it a highly recommended destination for those seeking an upscale retreat in the heart of wine country.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for Borgo San Felice Resort is overwhelmingly positive, with an impressive overall rating of 9.4 on Agoda.com and a "9.3 Exceptional" rating based on 71 reviews. Guests frequently describe their stays as "magical," "fantastic," and a "fairytale in a small village." The resort is lauded for combining elegance, comfort, and outstanding service.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently highlight several aspects that make Borgo San Felice truly stand out:

  • Stunning Historic Property & Design: The resort is a beautifully converted medieval hamlet dating back to the 8th century, featuring honey-colored brick and stone buildings, a central piazza with a chapel, and meticulously maintained gravel paths and gardens. The atmosphere evokes a sense of visiting a private estate rather than just a resort.
  • Exceptional Service & Staff: The staff receives high praise for being "terrific, very friendly and helpful," "delightful," and demonstrating a "sense of warmth and welcome."
  • Culinary Destination: With two restaurants, including a Michelin-starred one, and an on-site winery, the resort is a significant draw for food and wine enthusiasts.
  • Tranquil Location: Surrounded by vineyards and olive groves, the resort offers breathtaking panoramic views and a serene environment perfect for unwinding.
  • Amenities: The property boasts a spa, a heated outdoor pool, a newly updated gym, tennis courts, and a variety of curated experiences such as cooking classes, wine tastings, and bike rentals.

3. Room Quality

The 60 rooms and suites at Borgo San Felice are individually decorated and vary in size due to the historic nature of the property. They mostly feature a "crisp, fresh look" with neutral color schemes that highlight natural details like terracotta or wood floors, exposed beam ceilings, and delicate stonework. Rich velvets and linens add "bright flashes of color" and a luxurious feel. Guests can expect comfortable stays with plush beds, air conditioning, free in-room WiFi, safes, and pillow menus. Marble bathrooms with designer toiletries and bidets are also noted. Some suites offer distinct design elements, such as blue and white striped bedrooms or diamond-checkered tile around tubs. For larger groups or more privacy, two villas, Cassanova and Colonna, are available with private gardens, full kitchens, and pools.

4. Dining Experience

Borgo San Felice is a culinary highlight with two distinct restaurants:

  • Il Poggio Rosso: This is the resort's upscale, Michelin-starred restaurant, also holding a Green Michelin Star for its sustainable practices. Led by Head Chef Stelios Sakalis, it offers modern Tuscan cuisine with Mediterranean influences, utilizing seasonal ingredients, many sourced from the resort's own Orto Felice garden. Reservations are highly recommended.
  • Osteria del Grigio: A more casual dining option, the Osteria serves classic Tuscan dishes like pici al ragù and bistecca alla Fiorentina. It offers a relaxed atmosphere for lunch and dinner.
  • Breakfast: The complimentary breakfast buffet is described as "exceptional" and "fantastic," offering a wide selection including fruits, vegetables, cheeses, meats, yogurts, tarts, and cakes. Eggs can be made to order, and American-style drip coffee is available upon request.

There is also a bar, Bar Archi, on site.

5. Service & Staff

The service at Borgo San Felice is consistently lauded as incredible, with guests praising every single person working at the resort for their warmth, welcome, and helpfulness. The staff's professionalism and attentiveness contribute significantly to the overall positive experience, assisting with everything from private wine tastings to local tour recommendations. Guests have specifically mentioned front desk staff for being exceptional in handling requests.

6. Location & Accessibility

Located in the Chianti region, Borgo San Felice is situated amidst rolling Tuscan hills, vineyards, and olive groves. It offers a tranquil escape while still being accessible to major Tuscan attractions. The resort is about 30 minutes from Siena and approximately an hour from Florence by car. The scenic drives to and from these cities are part of the Tuscan experience. On-site, guests can enjoy vineyard tours and olive oil tastings, and nearby attractions include Castello di Brolio. The resort offers shuttle service for ease of travel around the area.

7. Value & Pricing

While Borgo San Felice Resort is a luxury property, some guests consider the room price fair for the experience offered. However, the average room price of $985 is significantly higher than the average hotel room in Castelnuovo Berardenga, which is around $553. Guests note that "add-ons" such as tasting menus at Il Poggio Rosso or booking transportation through the hotel can be expensive and add considerably to the overall bill. Despite the cost, many guests feel it offers "exceptional value for money" for the luxurious experience provided.

8. Common Complaints

While overwhelmingly positive, some minor recurring issues or criticisms have been noted:

  • Noise from above: One guest mentioned hearing people moving around in the room above them at night, suggesting a top-floor room might be preferable.
  • Housekeeping timing: Housekeeping did not always come at a convenient time for one guest, who advised scheduling cleaning with the office.
  • Cost of add-ons: While the room price might be considered fair, additional services and dining experiences can be quite expensive.
  • Hotel transportation pricing: One guest found the pricing for transportation booked through the hotel to be expensive, and noted that the price seemed negotiable, which they found unusual.

Borgo San Felice is truly a magical retreat in the Tuscan countryside. The grounds are absolutely stunning, every view feels like a painting. We enjoyed an incredible dinner at the Tuscan restaurant, where the Florentine steak was cooked to perfection. Our room upgrade was such a treat, and was truly the highlight of our trip. While the lunch waitstaff could have been a bit friendlier, the overall...

What a magical stay at Borgo San Felice! The resort is sprawling and feels like stepping into a medieval Italian village — tranquil lanes and flowers everywhere. The landscaping is impeccable and every corner invites you to slow down and soak in the beauty. From the moment we arrived, the staff were friendly, attentive, and eager to help. Breakfast outdoors was one of the highlights; it was a per...

WOW! This is a first class lovely place. My husband and I met our adult daughter (who lives in Europe) here for a 4 night stay. The place is magical. We had a wonderful stay and were sad to leave. Our two bedroom suite was just fantastic. The breakfast was so great - fantastic selections. We ate at both hotel restaurants. Both very good. The hotel drove us to a nearby town for 2 dinners wh...

My wife and I recently spent a few nights at Borgo San Felice as the first stop on our honeymoon and the accommodation, as well as the experience overall, was nothing short of incredible. The staff was attentive and helpful and our room was spacious and immaculately cleaned on a daily basis. A special shoutout to Singh, who was able to assist us in getting to our room in the wee hours of the eveni...

My wife and I recently stayed at this hotel for 3 nights. On day one, we realized we had no hot water in our bathroom. It was, to be specific, cold to lukewarm. I reported it to the guest reception and to our disappointment, nothing was done about it. My wife inquired about changing rooms and was told it would be a 900 euro upgrade. We did not change rooms. We did however endure 3 days of cold...

The service level in the restaurant for breakfast was terrible. Not at all at a level of what should be experienced at a property if this caliber. Rude staff, line ups, wrong orders. Similarly at the spa. Horrible experience. They did not have our reservation and had us sit there for an hour not talking to us - we just left. Fantastic property with unacceptable low service level.
