Verified guests frequently rate it highly, with scores like 19.9/20 for rooms, 20.0/20 for service, and 19.9/20 for overall experience on a 20-point scale based on Michelin Guide guest feedback. The general sentiment is one of profound relaxation, renewal, and an appreciation for thoughtful detail and connection with nature.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently laud several aspects of Beniya Mukayu:

  • Private Open-Air Onsen Baths: Every one of the 16 rooms features its own private open-air hot spring bath, facing a natural mountain garden, providing an intimate and health-regenerative experience.
  • Design & Ambiance: The ryokan's design is a harmonious blend of traditional Japanese aesthetics and modern minimalism, characterized by clean lines, natural materials like tatami, Japanese paper, bamboo, and diatomaceous earth, and an open design that invites the surrounding nature indoors. The concept of "Mukayu," meaning "richness in emptiness" or "natural without artifice," is central to its tranquil atmosphere.
  • Exceptional Service: The hospitality is described as warm, friendly, diligent, and attentive, with many guests appreciating the personal welcome and farewell from the owners, Mr. and Mrs. Nakamichi.
  • Connection to Nature: The property is built around a natural mountain garden, and its design maximizes views of the changing seasons, moss, and 300-year-old pines, creating a sense of peace and immersion in the natural world. Libraries dedicated to local flora further emphasize this connection.
  • Culinary Excellence: The multi-course kaiseki dinners, featuring seasonal and local ingredients, are frequently highlighted as outstanding and a significant part of the experience.

3. Room Quality

Beniya Mukayu offers only 16 rooms, including Japanese-style, Western-style, and mixed Japanese/Western-style rooms, ensuring an intimate atmosphere. Each room is spacious and comfortable, designed to integrate with the natural surroundings.

  • Private Onsens: A defining feature is the private open-air hot spring bath in every room, often with views of the forest garden. Some rooms even feature open-air jacuzzi baths.
  • Design: Rooms feature traditional materials such as tatami mats and shoji screens, combined with modern elements. The design emphasizes clean lines, soft light, and uncluttered spaces, promoting relaxation and introspection.
  • Comfort: Guests describe beds as comfortable. Rooms often include a private deck or veranda, with some suites featuring sliding doors that open entirely to merge the interior with the outdoor scenery. Some Japanese-style rooms on the garden floor even have hammocks.
  • Variety: Room types include Japanese Premier Tatami Garden View, Zen Style Junior and Executive Suites, Western Premier Garden View Room, and the Wakamurasaki and Byakuroku Suites, with varying sizes and features like study areas.

4. Dining Experience

The dining experience at Beniya Mukayu is a cornerstone of the ryokan stay.

  • Kaiseki Dinner: Dinners are multi-course kaiseki meals, showcasing seasonal and local ingredients. Highlights often include fresh seafood like snow crab and sashimi, mountain vegetables, and regional meats like Noto beef. Menus are handwritten and change daily, demonstrating a commitment to freshness and seasonality. Dishes are meticulously presented on local ceramics.
  • Breakfast: Guests can choose between Japanese and Western-style breakfasts, both offering a multi-course, nutritionally balanced meal. The Western option typically includes salad, fruit, eggs, and juices, while the Japanese breakfast is a traditional spread. A highlight is often the juice bar with fresh-pressed juices.
  • Dining Setting: Meals are typically served in the dining room, which overlooks the forest garden. While some guests expressed a preference for in-room dining for more privacy, the restaurant provides personal service.
  • Dietary Needs: Special dietary arrangements, including vegetarian and vegan options, can be accommodated with advance notice.

5. Service & Staff

The service at Beniya Mukayu is consistently praised as a major highlight, embodying peak Japanese hospitality.

  • Personalized Attention: The third-generation owners, Mr. and Mrs. Nakamichi, often personally greet guests, explain the ryokan's philosophy, and even perform the daily matcha tea ceremony.
  • Warm and Diligent: Staff are described as warm, friendly, and diligent. They are attentive to details, ensuring a comfortable and memorable stay.
  • Proactive vs. Reactive: One guest noted the service to be more reactive than proactive at times, possibly due to newer staff members, suggesting guests might be left to their own devices more than at other ryokans. However, the overall impression remains highly positive.
  • Activities: Staff assist with arranging local activities like spa treatments, ikebana, or local sweets making.

6. Location & Accessibility

Beniya Mukayu is nestled in the spa town of Yamashiro Onsen, Kaga, Ishikawa Prefecture, perched on the hillside of Yakushiyama.

  • Tranquil Setting: The location offers a peaceful and secluded environment, surrounded by trees and a natural mountain garden, ideal for relaxation and introspection.
  • Proximity to Attractions: It is about an hour's drive from Kanazawa. The ryokan is also conveniently located for those traveling between Kyoto and Kanazawa, or to more remote areas like Gokayama or Shirakawago.
  • Transport: Complimentary shuttle bus service is available from and to Kaga Onsen Station during specific hours (14:20 to 18:00 for arrivals, and every 30 minutes from 8:45 to 11:15 for departures). Transfers to and from Komatsu by taxi can be arranged at an additional cost. Access from Kyoto takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes by limited express train, and from Tokyo about 3 hours by Shinkansen or 1 hour by air to Komatsu.

7. Value & Pricing

Beniya Mukayu is considered a luxury ryokan, and its pricing reflects the exclusive experience, personalized service, and high-quality amenities.

  • Price Range: Room rates can vary depending on the season and booking status. An estimated price for a room with breakfast included starts around ¥121,000 (approximately USD 701.86). Relais & Châteaux lists prices starting from US$787.
  • Worth the Cost: Guests generally consider it worth the cost, viewing the stay as a holistic event rather than just lodging. The comprehensive experience, including private onsens, exquisite dining, and exceptional service, justifies the premium pricing for many.

8. Common Complaints

While overwhelmingly positive, a few minor points of feedback have been noted:

  • Dining Room Privacy: Some guests have mentioned that the dining room seating can feel intimate, with tables close to one another, which might feel less private for some. There was also a comment about wishing for meals to be served in the room or a private dining area.
  • Service Proactiveness: One reviewer felt the service was more reactive than proactive at times, which might be a consideration for guests expecting constant, anticipatory service.
  • Not for Young Children: Beniya Mukayu has a policy of not accommodating children under the age of 7. This is a consideration for families with very young children.
  • Minimalist Aesthetic: While a highlight for many, those expecting flashy amenities or a more overtly luxurious, less toned-down experience might find the minimalist design and emphasis on tranquility to be "too toned-down". It's not recommended for "very high-energy kids" or people who "hate minimalism".

I stayed at a hot spring ryokan in Kaga City, Ishikawa Prefecture. It is a property that has received recognition from the Michelin Hotel Guide, and reservations must be made through the official Michelin app, which already gives it a strong sense of exclusivity. After actually staying there, I felt the reputation was well deserved. The guest room was designed in a refined Japanese-modern style...

One of the most special places I have ever stayed. Luxurious and totally zen at the same time. A magical setting and delicious food. I just regret that we didn't stay two nights.

Not sure why this is listed as a 3 star it is a beautiful luxury stay without being pretentious. The staff was lovely from start to finish. The grounds are gorgeous and the place is spotless. We stayed at two other Ryokans and this is top notch. The baths are spotless, linens are beautiful. Food and service was outstanding.

I booked this accommodation hoping that it would be a treat for my family, and the staff and location definitely delivered! It's family business, and it shows. They take great care and pride in their hospitality. My mom, a hot spring connoisseur, was especially impressed with their cleanliness and attention to det...

Beautiful, spiritual, healing. Splurge for at least 2 nights with people you love. It is worth it. There are very few rooms, each affording a private onsen surrounding a peaceful sakura forest, and on our visit it was snowing but spring was approaching and the trees were beginning to blossom. Generous bath/face products, and thoughtfully produced and woven into the philosophy of the ryokan. Howe...

Beniya Mukayu is, without a doubt, the most exceptional luxury ryokan we have ever stayed at. Every aspect of our experience was infused with thoughtful details and impeccable service. We were truly immersed in the Ryokan's philosophy of "richness in emptiness" and had the most relaxing time. We visited in August last year to celebrate a birthday and anniversary, and from the moment we arrived, w...
