Expert Review: Bailiffscourt Hotel & Spa

Bailiffscourt Hotel & Spa, a Michelin Key Selected property in West Sussex, offers guests a unique blend of medieval charm and modern luxury, nestled within 30 acres of private parkland leading to Climping Beach.

Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for Bailiffscourt Hotel & Spa is overwhelmingly positive, with many guests describing their stays as "exceptional" and "amazing." The hotel consistently delivers across accommodation, service, and atmosphere, leading to numerous repeat visitors. It is highly recommended for those seeking comfort, relaxation, and top-quality dining in a special setting.

Key Highlights

Guests frequently praise the hotel's stunning grounds, which include 30 acres of private parkland, an inner rose-clad courtyard, and a 13th-century chapel. The award-winning spa is a significant draw, featuring indoor and outdoor pools, a hot tub, sauna, steam room, and a modern fitness centre. The medieval architecture and charming, unique design throughout the property are consistently highlighted. The hotel is also noted for its excellent service and being dog-friendly.

Room Quality

Bailiffscourt boasts 39 beautifully appointed bedrooms, often located in charming houses and cottages. Rooms offer a choice of medieval or contemporary décor, complete with private bathrooms, satellite TV, and garden views. Many rooms are described as spacious, clean, and comfortable, with signature rooms like "Baylies" featuring vaulted ceilings, huge four-poster beds, walk-in wardrobes, and luxurious bathrooms with roll-top baths and rain showers. Amenities often include Nespresso machines, homemade biscuits, and spa-quality toiletries. However, one guest noted an underwhelming room with a small four-poster bed, an uncomfortable sofa, a musty smell, and a bathroom window without a blind overlooking a car park.

Dining Experience

The Tapestry Restaurant, with its elegant medieval architecture, gothic mullioned windows, and tapestry-hung walls, provides a stunning backdrop for modern English cuisine. The food is consistently described as delicious, excellent, and of top quality, with menus crafted using fine, locally sourced ingredients. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, along with mid-morning coffee and traditional afternoon tea. Breakfast offers a plentiful continental buffet and a good range of perfectly cooked options. Dinner menus include solid classics, with some innovative dishes and vegetarian options. Afternoon tea is also a popular and highly recommended experience.

Service & Staff

The service at Bailiffscourt Hotel & Spa receives widespread acclaim, with staff frequently described as brilliant, attentive, friendly, and going above and beyond for guests. Guests appreciate the efficient and friendly hospitality, with some mentioning staff members by name for their exceptional service. The hotel is also very accommodating towards families, providing high chairs, cots, and babysitting services, and staff are noted for engaging positively with children.

Location & Accessibility

The hotel boasts an idyllic countryside location, set in 30 acres of private parkland that leads directly to Climping Beach, just a 10-minute walk away. This provides a perfect escape with opportunities for coastal walks. The charming market town of Arundel, featuring a medieval castle, cathedral, and riverside walks, is only a 15-minute drive from the hotel. For those travelling further afield, the hotel is less than an hour from London Gatwick Airport. Public transport links are available, with bus stops nearby and a train line (Mildmay Line) accessible.

Value & Pricing

Bailiffscourt Hotel & Spa is considered an expensive property, but guests generally agree it offers a worthwhile luxury experience, particularly for special occasions or indulgent treats. Average nightly rates can range from approximately £346 for a weeknight to £399 for a weekend night. Prices fluctuate seasonally, with March often being the cheapest month and May the most expensive. Agoda notes an average price of around $475 per room, suggesting it offers "exceptional value for money" within its luxury segment.

Common Complaints

While overwhelmingly positive, some minor criticisms have been noted. One guest found their room underwhelming for the price, citing a small four-poster bed, an uncomfortable sofa, a musty smell, and a lack of privacy in the bathroom due to a missing blind. Another review mentioned slow service and a hot dining room during a particularly busy period. Issues with the spa area occasionally needing tidying and insufficient sunbeds by the pool have also been raised. Some older employee reviews indicated unfriendly management and high staff turnover, though more recent employee feedback praises a positive and friendly work environment.

We had the best time at Bailiffscourt. The staff were so lovely and very attentive. The Baylies Suite was incredible – super cosy, romantic and honestly just perfect for a little escape. The food was great too, everything we ate was delicious. 10/10 experience, we’ll definitely be coming back.

We returned to Bailiffscourt where we celebrated our marriage 40 years ago yesterday. They upgraded our room and put a sweet card and bottle of bubbly in the room. The food and service are amazing and the staff were very friendly and kind. Honestly such a beautiful spot and full of happy memories for us. Thank you

What a pleasure to stay at this lovely hotel. We wanted to get away just for one night to relax and refresh ourselves, and Bailiffscourt was just what we needed. The Medieval-style surroundings felt like stepping into another world, away from the busyness of daily life. The place has a fascinating history, and we enjoyed exploring its characterful buildings and generous grounds. Plus it’s right ne...

Our room was lovely and conveniently located right next to our friends’. The spa facilities were excellent - we especially enjoyed relaxing in the outdoor pool and jacuzzi, where Archie the resident peacock casually preened himself nearby as we soaked! Breakfast was absolutely delicious and a perfect way to end our stay.

Walm and cosy hotel, friendly efficient staff, great food, log fires, fourposter beds, and a superb spa and swimming facilities. Dog friendly with plenty of local walks and a stones throw from Climping beach. Particularly magical around Christm...
