Expert Review: Amanzoe

Amanzoe, a Michelin Two-Key property nestled in Kranidi, Greece, consistently garners high praise as an ultra-luxury retreat, often described as "phenomenal" and "incredible." It stands out for its breathtaking design, exceptional service, and unparalleled privacy, making it a favored destination for discerning travelers.

Overall Rating & Sentiment

Amanzoe is widely considered an exceptional and visually stunning resort, often ranked among the best luxury hotels in Greece and the world. Guests frequently express an overwhelmingly positive sentiment, highlighting the resort's ability to create a tranquil and exclusive oasis. It has been likened to stepping into a Greek temple or the deities' home on Mount Olympus due to its grandeur and design. The resort's overall experience is often rated as "exceptional."

Key Highlights

Guests consistently laud Amanzoe for several standout features:

  • Design & Architecture: Designed by the legendary Ed Tuttle, the resort boasts a classic Greek architectural style with sleek, contemporary interiors, featuring gleaming white marble and Doric columns. Its hilltop setting offers panoramic 360-degree views of the Peloponnese countryside, the Aegean Sea, and neighboring islands.
  • Privacy: The resort prioritizes privacy, with pavilions and villas designed with expansive private terraces and often their own pools, creating a seamless extension of the airy interiors.
  • Service: The "legendary Aman service" is a consistent highlight, characterized by attentiveness, discretion, and a proactive approach to guest needs.
  • Amenities: Every pavilion includes a private pool. The resort also offers an extensive spa with unique offerings like Watsu, multiple pools (including two lap pools and two children's pools at the Beach Club), a gym, yoga and Pilates studios, and a library. A complimentary shuttle service to the Beach Club, located about 6km away, and free use of non-motorized watersports are also appreciated.

Room Quality

The accommodations at Amanzoe are referred to as "pavilions" and "villas," not standard rooms, underscoring their luxurious and spacious nature. They are described as "simply stunning," with no expense spared in their design and construction.

  • Pavilions: Feature high ceilings, 100m² of indoor space, and large outdoor terraces (around 110m²) with a 6-meter plunge pool, lounge chairs, and dining areas. Interiors include his-and-hers bathrooms, large double showers with glass roofs, and soaking tubs that look out to the pool or patio. Not all pavilions offer the famed sea views; lower-category pavilions may have views of vegetation. Guests recommend booking at least a "premium view pavilion" for magnificent Aegean Sea panoramas.
  • Villas: Available with 4 to 6 bedrooms, these are even more expansive, likened to "mini-hotels," and often come with a dedicated host and private chef.

Dining Experience

Amanzoe features three restaurants: a main restaurant on the hilltop, a fine-dining venue at the sunset terrace, and another less formal option near the main pool, which converts into a Japanese restaurant (Nama) in the evening, as well as a restaurant at the Beach Club.

  • Quality: The cuisine is generally described as "mouthwatering" and of the highest quality, with options for Greek, Mediterranean, and international dishes. Breakfast, often served in the main restaurant with breathtaking sea views, is typically included and rated as excellent, high-quality, and varied, often à la carte.
  • Variety: A common point of criticism is the limited menu variation for longer stays. Some guests suggest that menus do not change frequently, leading to repetition, especially given the resort's remote location where guests rely heavily on on-site dining. In-room dining has also received feedback regarding inconsistent food temperature upon delivery. Some reviewers note the food was "just okay" in general. However, guests staying in villas with a dedicated chef report a more personalized and flexible dining experience.

Service & Staff

The service at Amanzoe is consistently highlighted as a core strength and a defining characteristic of the Aman brand.

  • Attentiveness & Discretion: Staff are praised for being incredibly welcoming, friendly, attentive, and discreet. They are known for remembering small details, such as guest names, coffee orders, and food preferences, often without being asked.
  • Efficiency: Service is generally quick, smooth, and professional, from welcoming teams upon arrival to seamless buggy service across the extensive grounds and flawless valet parking. The housekeeping staff is often described as "magical," refreshing rooms without guests noticing.
  • Personalization: For guests in villas, the "Super Duper Deluxe version of service" includes a dedicated host and chef who cater to all preferences, making dining a bespoke experience.
  • Inconsistencies: While generally excellent, some past reviews mention occasional inconsistencies, such as slower service during peak times, forgotten requests for mini-bar items, or needing to ask for water multiple times at dinner.

Location & Accessibility

Amanzoe is situated on a hilltop in the Peloponnese, amidst olive groves, offering panoramic views.

  • Remote Setting: Its secluded nature provides a sense of tranquility but also means it's a "far flung destination."
  • Travel Time: The drive from Athens International Airport (ATH) is approximately 2.5 to 3 hours, on generally excellent roads, though the final part involves winding mountain roads. Helicopter transfers are also available and take around 40 minutes.
  • Local Attractions: The resort is within easy reach of archaeological sites and cosmopolitan islands like Spetses. Porto Heli is about a 20-minute drive away, offering local restaurants, and a 10-minute ferry can take guests to Spetses for a day trip. The Beach Club is a 10-minute drive, with a complimentary shuttle provided.

Value & Pricing

Amanzoe is a high-end luxury resort, and its pricing reflects this.

  • Cost: Stays are expensive, with a "standard" Pool Pavilion noted to cost around €2050 +tax/night for bed and breakfast in one review. Villas, especially with dedicated staff, can be significantly more.
  • Worth the Cost: Many guests feel the experience justifies the high price, citing the exceptional design, privacy, and service. One reviewer gave it a "Value for money: 10/10." However, some guests acknowledge that activities within the resort can be very expensive.
  • Michelin Keys: As a Michelin Two-Key property, it signifies an "exceptional stay" and a "very special hotel."

Common Complaints

While overwhelmingly positive, some recurring criticisms include:

  • Food Menu Variation: The most common complaint is the limited and repetitive nature of the restaurant menus, particularly for guests staying longer than a few days, leading to a desire for more variety and daily specials.
  • Inconsistent Service (Rare): Although service is generally outstanding, some older reviews mention occasional lapses, such as slow dinner service or housekeeping not being as seamless as expected.
  • High Activity & Spa Costs: Activities and spa treatments are noted to be very expensive. For example, one massage cost €500.
  • Travel Time: The remote location means a significant travel time from Athens, which can be a consideration for some guests.
  • Beach Club Access: While feeling secluded, the beach is not privately owned, so outsiders may occasionally pass through.Amanzoe, a Michelin Two-Key property nestled in Kranidi, Greece, consistently garners high praise as an ultra-luxury retreat, often described as "phenomenal" and "incredible." It still fully embodies the spirit of Aman — beautiful, sophisticated, refined, and luxurious, yet warm and inviting. What impressed me the most was the kids club. Perfect! The only downside: the location is quite remote, and the road to get there is a bit winding (a 3-hour car ride). An alternative is to use a helicopter — fortunately, Amanzoe offers this service.
