Expert Review: Ace Hotel Kyoto
Ace Hotel Kyoto, a Michelin One-Key property, consistently receives high praise for its seamless blend of traditional Japanese aesthetics with a modern, artistic, and community-focused Ace Hotel vibe. It stands out as a "cultural crossroads" where design, comfort, and hospitality converge to offer a unique stay in Kyoto.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The general consensus for Ace Hotel Kyoto is overwhelmingly positive, often described with terms like "wonderful" and "amazing". It boasts high scores, with a 9.2 rating from over 2,000 reviews and a 9.3/10 based on nearly 300 reviews on various platforms. Guests frequently express a strong desire to return, highlighting it as a "must stay" for visitors to Kyoto. It's recognized as a welcoming, design-driven boutique hotel that perfectly balances its "East meets West" philosophy.
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently rave about several aspects of Ace Hotel Kyoto:
- Design & Atmosphere: The hotel's architecture and interior design are frequently lauded. It ingeniously integrates the historic 1926 Kyoto Central Telephone Office with a new wing by renowned architect Kengo Kuma, featuring interiors by Commune Design. This results in a stylish, "über-cool but inviting" ambiance, characterized by warm wood, exposed concrete, artisanal touches, and unique artworks. The lobby, described as a "beating heart," serves as a dynamic co-working space, art gallery, and community hub, often featuring DJs and local gatherings.
- Location & Accessibility: Its central location in Nakagyo Ward, with direct access to the Karasuma Oike train station, is a major highlight. This provides unparalleled convenience for exploring Kyoto.
- Amenities & Unique Touches: In-room record players with curated vinyl selections and sometimes even acoustic guitars are beloved unique amenities that contribute to the hotel's distinctive personality. The presence of Japan's first Stumptown Coffee Roasters outpost is also a significant draw for coffee lovers. A fitness center and free bicycles further enhance the guest experience.
3. Room Quality
Rooms at Ace Hotel Kyoto are celebrated for their comfort, cleanliness, and thoughtful design, often described as spacious in comparison to typical Japanese hotel rooms. The design reflects the hotel's "East meets West" philosophy, blending Japanese and Western styles. Features include distinct living and sleeping areas, warm wood paneling in bathrooms, slate tile floors, rain showers, and deep tubs. Many rooms include Noguchi Akari light sculptures, record players with vinyl, and sometimes a guitar. Beds are often set lower to the ground, echoing traditional Japanese tatami arrangements. The hotel also implements sustainable practices, providing biodegradable bamboo room keys and toothbrushes.
4. Dining Experience
Ace Hotel Kyoto offers a diverse and acclaimed dining scene with three distinct restaurants and a coffee shop:
- Kōsa: This is the hotel's main restaurant, serving Californian Kyoto cuisine with a farm-to-table approach, sourcing ingredients from local farmers. Breakfast at Kōsa is highly recommended, offering various sets including American, Eggs Benedict, California Avocado Toast, and a traditional Japanese breakfast, all praised for their quality and presentation.
- PIOPIKO Bar & Taco Lounge: A popular Mexican taqueria and cocktail bar led by Chef Wes Avila, known for blending traditional Mexican flavors with local Kyoto ingredients. It also hosts live jam sessions.
- Mr. Maurice's Italian: Located on the third floor, this Italian restaurant overseen by Chef Marc Vetri offers a casual dining experience with a modern take on Italian comfort food and a Japanese twist, including wood-fired pizzas and handmade pasta.
- Stumptown Coffee Roasters: Japan's first outpost of the Portland-based coffee brand, it's a favorite for high-quality espresso and a popular spot for digital nomads in the lobby.
5. Service & Staff
The service and staff at Ace Hotel Kyoto are consistently described as friendly, fashionable, and exceptionally helpful, often speaking "impeccable English". Guests appreciate their eagerness to assist with local knowledge, transport arrangements, and restaurant recommendations. While there might be occasional waits at reception during peak times, the overall hospitality is warm and efficient, contributing to a welcoming and comfortable stay.
6. Location & Accessibility
The hotel's location in Kyoto's Nakagyo Ward is considered excellent and central, making it an ideal base for exploration. Its direct connection to the Karasuma Oike train station is a significant convenience. Nearby attractions include Nishiki Market, The Museum of Kyoto, and the International Manga Museum, all within walking distance. Kyoto Station is easily reachable by a short subway or taxi ride. The hotel also provides free bicycles for guests to explore the city.
7. Value & Pricing
While Ace Hotel Kyoto is considered a premium experience, many guests feel it offers good value for its quality and unique offerings. Room prices can start from approximately US$225, with average weeknight prices around $333 and weekend nights around $357. Pricing can fluctuate significantly with seasons, with June typically being the cheapest month and March the most expensive. The comprehensive amenities, distinctive design, and prime location contribute to guests perceiving it as a worthwhile investment.
8. Common Complaints
Despite overwhelming positive feedback, some minor recurring issues have been noted:
- Room Size: A few guests reported that some "deluxe" rooms felt smaller than expected, especially in comparison to other rooms at the property.
- Dining Consistency: While overall dining is praised, some reviews suggest that the Mexican and Italian restaurants, PIOPIKO and Mr. Maurice's, are not always as highly rated by all guests as Kōsa.
- Lobby Crowding: The popular and vibrant lobby, while a highlight, can sometimes be crowded, making it challenging to find a quiet spot for coffee.
- Laundry Cost: The hotel's laundry service was cited by one guest as being expensive.

Great hotel with easy access to subway (no need to even go outside). We stayed via Chase travel and booked with their Edit program to get $100 property credit and free breakfast. Using points boost and $250 semi annual credit from Chase Sapphire Reserve got the two night cost down to 22,000 points, which is a fabulous value. Rooms are very nice and a good size for Japan. We had a lovely mounta...

Stayed here for my birthday trip ! We got a free wine bottle and a lovely card. We had a very nice surprise for Christmas Day with cookies waiting for us! Such a nice detail! Very comfortable bed and love that it has vinyl and great coffee place downstairs! And we had a room with a view of the hills and we also saw a tombi fly in the mornings.

I have no words to describe how amazing this hotel is. It’s large, yet incredibly comfortable. It has everything you could possibly need: a café on the ground floor, coffee shops, stores – everything is nearby, refined, and very stylish. The rooms are spacious. I had a standard king room, and it was quite large and extremely comfortable. It had everything I needed: a big room, a big bed, a bathroo...
