1898 The Post, Ghent: A Magical Stay in a Historic Gem

1898 The Post in Ghent, a distinguished Michelin One-Key property, consistently garners rave reviews for its enchanting atmosphere, impeccable service, and prime location. Housed within Ghent's former central post office, a stunning neo-Gothic building from the 1913 World's Fair, the hotel offers a unique blend of historical grandeur and contemporary luxury. Guests frequently describe their stays as "magical" and "one of the best hotel experiences ever."

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The overall sentiment for 1898 The Post is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently awarding it top ratings. It is widely considered a fantastic boutique hotel, even ranked among the top 500 hotels in the world by Travel+Leisure since 2022. Reviewers consistently express delight, often stating they would "100% do it again." The hotel's charm, sophisticated details, and warm hospitality leave a lasting impression on visitors.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently laud several aspects of 1898 The Post:

  • Design & Ambiance: The hotel's transformation from a neo-Gothic post office into a boutique hotel is a major highlight. The interior design evokes a "Harry Potter" or "cinematic" feel with sloping ceilings, antique wooden floors, and period furniture, creating a dark, moody, and undeniably chic ambiance. The meticulous attention to detail, from the decor to the views, is highly praised.
  • Location: Its position in the heart of Ghent's historic district, directly opposite the River Lys, is deemed "excellent" and "the best for tourists."
  • The Cobbler Bar: The in-house cocktail bar, "The Cobbler," is a popular spot, celebrated for its cozy interior, impressive cocktail menu, and stunning views of historic Ghent.
  • Comfort & Quality: The high-spec finishes, comfortable bedding, and luxurious welcome products (such as Guerlain) are frequently mentioned.

3. Room Quality

The 38 rooms and suites, ranging from 20 to 65 m², are each unique and thoughtfully designed, paying homage to the building's original spirit. They feature high ceilings, large windows, subtle indirect lighting, and antique furniture. Guests consistently praise the comfort of the beds, with some even inspired to upgrade their home mattresses. Bathrooms often include white marble, and while most rooms offer a very nice shower, some suites provide bathtubs. Amenities such as Nespresso machines, minibars with fresh citrus and homemade Negroni, and quality bath products are standard. Room categories are whimsically named after postal terms like "Stamp," "Postcard," "Envelope," "Letter," and "Carriage." The Tower Suite, split over two floors in the octagonal tower, is particularly noted for its old-world romance and white-marble bathroom.

4. Dining Experience

  • Breakfast: Served in "The Kitchen" on the first floor, guests can enjoy a delicious homemade American breakfast buffet. It includes homemade bread, cold cuts, flaky pastries, cereals, and fruit, with sugar-dusted waffles made fresh. While not included in all rates, it is highly recommended.
  • The Cobbler Bar: Beyond cocktails, The Cobbler offers a romantic and elegant atmosphere, with its signature drinks lovingly prepared by an award-winning team of mixologists. It's a fantastic spot for a pre-dinner tipple or a hot chocolate.

5. Service & Staff

The staff at 1898 The Post receive consistent accolades for their exceptional hospitality. Guests describe them as "incredibly attentive," "helpful," "kind," "super friendly," and "professional." They are often highlighted for going above and beyond, providing excellent recommendations for local restaurants and offering helpful tips for exploring Ghent. The multilingual staff, speaking Dutch, French, English, and Spanish, further enhances the guest experience.

6. Location & Accessibility

Situated in the historic center of Ghent, 1898 The Post boasts an "excellent" and "great" location that is ideal for tourists. It offers breathtaking views of Ghent's historic city center and is located opposite the River Lys. Many of Ghent's architectural treasures are within easy reach, allowing guests to explore the city on foot. While the hotel itself is centrally located, some search results also mention private parking options. All public areas are wheelchair accessible, and specific ground-floor rooms are adapted for disabled guests with wider door frames and bathroom rails.

7. Value & Pricing

While acknowledged as not cheap, guests widely agree that 1898 The Post offers exceptional value for the experience it provides, with many stating it's worth the cost for a treat or a special weekend. The quality of the accommodation, service, and unique ambiance justifies the pricing for most visitors. Standard rates for a night may be around €199.74, excluding breakfast.

8. Common Complaints

Minor criticisms are few and far between. One guest noted a slight inconvenience in their room where the toilet was downstairs but the sink was upstairs in an open bathroom overlooking the bedroom. However, this appears to be an isolated comment and does not detract from the overwhelmingly positive feedback.

A beautiful and unique hotel in the beating heart of Ghent, with staff that go above and beyond to serve and holiday decor across the entire property. The bed linens were beautiful and the rooms well appointed with lots of nice touches, such as their signature cocktails in the minibar, a personalized note on arrival and much more. My only suggestion to management would be to invest in some propert...

The hotel was exceptional, and the location was even better. Everyone who worked there went above and beyond to help us, and their kindness really stood out. I would highly recommend staying here. I stayed in one of the smaller rooms since that’s all they had left—the hotel was pretty much sold out during our stay. There are two different types of rooms: some are on one floor, while others are sp...

Unfortunate that you pay a fortune to stay at the hotel but are unable to fully enjoy all its facilities. Wonderful cocktail bar called The Cobbler but unfortunately we had to sit in our room and drink our cocktails via room service because there was no space in the hotel bar. It is open to outside guests with no preference given to guests paying hundreds of Euro to stay there.

This review is based on one night. Location: If you want to experience staying in a historical, magnificent place right in the heart of Gent, this is the right hotel. Room: We stayed in a dublex standart king room. The bed area was narrow. There is no view and balcony in the room. The toilet on the ground floor has no sink and I think it is not good for hygiene. The hygiene gel in the restroom i...
