1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for 1872 River House is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing their stays as "sensational" and "perfect." It holds an "Exceptional" rating of 9.6 out of 10 on Expedia from 320 reviews, and a 9.6 on Booking.com. The Michelin Guide awards it a remarkable 19.4 out of 20, reflecting its high quality and guest satisfaction. Reviewers consistently praise the hotel's ability to blend historic charm with modern comforts.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently highlight several key aspects of 1872 River House:

  • Sensational Location: The hotel's prime position directly on the Douro River offers gorgeous, breathtaking views, while remaining central yet quiet.
  • Exceptional Service: The staff's friendliness, helpfulness, and genuine enthusiasm for their city are frequently praised.
  • Charming Design: The beautifully renovated 19th-century building maintains its original character with rustic stone walls, old-fashioned wooden floors, and colonial Portuguese furniture, coupled with sleek, modern touches.
  • Delicious Breakfast: The breakfast, often included in the rate, is described as delightful, varied, and plentiful, enjoyed in a lounge overlooking the river.

3. Room Quality

The eight individually furnished rooms at 1872 River House are noted for their comfort, style, and unique character. Features commonly mentioned include spacious layouts, incredibly comfortable beds with premium bedding and down comforters, and sleek furniture. Bathrooms are equipped with modern rainfall showers, heated floors, and complimentary toiletries. Rooms also offer amenities such as free WiFi, air conditioning, flat-screen TVs, minibars, and laptop-friendly workspaces. Many guests recommend choosing a Superior Room with a River View for the stunning vistas, some of which include narrow balconies. Charm Rooms with City View are also available and are noted as lovely, though slightly less spacious.

4. Dining Experience

Breakfast is a standout feature at 1872 River House. It is typically included in the room rate and served until late in the stone-walled lounge, which offers direct views across the Douro River. The spread is described as simple but tasty, including pastries, cheese, fruit, cereals, and eggs cooked to order, with excellent cappuccinos. Beyond breakfast, complimentary cakes, snacks, wines (including port), and hot drinks are available, and there's a self-service beer tap in the lounge. While no other meals are served, numerous restaurants and bars are located just steps away in the Ribeira district.

5. Service & Staff

The staff at 1872 River House receives consistent accolades, frequently being described as "exceptional," "incredibly friendly," "accommodating," and "helpful." Guests appreciate their willingness to share local knowledge and go above and beyond to ensure a memorable stay, with some even receiving a complimentary drink and bottle of wine upon arrival. The multilingual staff contributes to a welcoming and comfortable experience.

6. Location & Accessibility

The hotel boasts an "unbeatable" location on the banks of the Douro River in Porto's UNESCO-listed Ribeira district. This central yet quiet spot allows for easy exploration of major attractions on foot, including Ribeira Square (a 3-minute walk), Porto Historic Center (a 1-minute walk), Dom Luis I Bridge (a 6-minute walk), and Porto Cathedral (a 7-minute walk). The famous port lodges of Vila Nova de Gaia are just across the river, easily accessible. Tram No. 1, which leads to the beach, stops directly outside the hotel. While public transport, Uber, or Bolt are recommended for getting around, an airport shuttle is available for a fee. Finding parking in the historic center can be difficult and expensive, so a car is not necessary for exploring Porto.

7. Value & Pricing

As a Michelin Key Selected property, 1872 River House offers a high-quality experience. Prices for a 1-night stay for two adults can start from approximately $128.8, with rates generally beginning around EUR 150 per night. This typically includes the highly-praised breakfast. Guests generally perceive the hotel as offering excellent value for its prime location, quality of service, and charming accommodations. A city tax of EUR 3.00 per person, per night, up to 7 nights, is an additional charge.

8. Common Complaints

While overwhelmingly positive, some minor points of feedback have been noted by guests:

  • Open-plan Ensuites: A couple of rooms, particularly those in the eaves, feature open-plan showers behind glass panels, which might not suit all preferences for privacy, though toilets are enclosed.
  • Street Noise: City View rooms may experience some street noise, though the hotel is generally described as quiet given its central location.
  • B&B Nature: Some guests note that it is a bed and breakfast, not a full-service hotel, meaning it is not staffed around the clock.
  • Parking Costs: For those arriving by car, parking in nearby underground car parks can be quite expensive.

Right on the water with so many restaurants and great views. Worth the cost. Lovely breakfast. The staff was very helpful answering all my logistical questions. Would love to have stayed longer. Highly recommend this boutique guest house of only 8 rooms in the old section of town on the edge of all the action. A wonderful restaurant right next door, not to be missed! Note there are 2 ways to enter...

Perfect location, comfortable rooms, fabulous hosts and a great breakfast. They went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable and also gave us nice extra perks (wine! food!) because they had to use a portable AC unit while their main AC is out.

1872 River House has a great location, right on the Duro River, next to a McDonalds. It's clean and the staff are very attentive, though no staff after 10 p.m. on the premises. Nice morning breakfast. My only complaint was thus: My wife and I were on our honeymoon and the rooms advertised as double beds are in fact, two single beds shoved together, but separate. The room on the other side of us al...

Wonderful location, great room with views. Removing 1 star for air conditioning not working. We visited in June and it would have been nice to have ac, but we were ok with the fan and open windows. We used the provided transfer to/from the airport, with no problems. I would recommend this hotel

We had a wonderful experience at the 1872 River House. The hotel itself was charming with thoughtful details in our room such as a handwritten welcome note and cookies and an amazing view. The room itself was spacious, clean and the bed and pillows were very comfortable as well as the room was very quiet despite being in a prime tourist location. The breakfast every morning was wonderful from Amer...

Check in was simple. We requested that the hotel arrange transportation from the airport. That went off without a hitch. The staff were friendly, knowledgeable about the area, spoke English, and provided a beautiful breakfast spread. The bed was comfortable. The room had a spectacular view of the river. The common space in the hotel has an amazing view of the river. You can walk along the waterf...
