Guests describe it as a peaceful sanctuary and a "revelation" for those seeking a thoughtful and authentically Bhutanese experience.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently laud Zhiwaling Ascent for several key aspects:

  • Design & Ambiance: The hotel's architecture combines elements of traditional Bhutanese farmhouses with Dzong architecture, creating an effortlessly contemporary and minimalist aesthetic. It's nestled in 25 acres of park-like grounds, offering panoramic views of Thimphu city and the valley, providing a sense of calm and being removed from city life. Large windows are designed to capture natural light and showcase the breathtaking surroundings.
  • Amenities: The property offers a range of facilities aimed at relaxation and well-being, including a spa, sauna, hot tub, yoga room, and an exquisite bar. The open-air attic or rooftop terrace is particularly popular for cocktails and 360-degree views. Free Wi-Fi and parking are also available.
  • Service & Staff: The attentive and friendly staff, many of whom are highly trained Bhutanese locals, receive consistent praise for their collaborative and helpful nature. The hotel also maintains a unique relationship with the Royal Institute of Tourism and Hospitality, offering students year-round training.

3. Room Quality

The 20 elegantly designed rooms, including Deluxe and Premier options, are described as spacious, comfortable, and tranquil. They feature natural wood floors and ceilings, underfloor heating, and large floor-to-ceiling windows that invite natural light and offer stunning views of the surrounding forests and mountains. Rooms come equipped with plush bathrobes, hair dryers, mini-bars, and coffee/tea makers. The decor uses neutral and earth tones, creating a calming and restful space, with locally made furnishings and textiles adding Bhutanese character.

Dining at Zhiwaling Ascent is highlighted as an experience that celebrates the rich flavors of Bhutanese cuisine, alongside international dishes. The restaurant offers a warm and inviting atmosphere, often with beautiful valley views. Meals are prepared with care, utilizing locally sourced and often organic ingredients, some from the hotel's own kitchen garden. Guests can enjoy a delightful continental, American, vegetarian, or Asian breakfast. Dinners are noted for their high quality and often feel like a warm gathering. It is also located near the Motithang Takin Preserve, offering a connection to Bhutan's wildlife. On-site car parking and airport shuttle services are available.

7. Value & Pricing

Zhiwaling Ascent is considered a high-end boutique-style lodging. Room rates generally start around USD 211-212 per night. While some reviews indicate a "value for money" score of 5.0 out of 10, suggesting that some guests perceive it as a premium experience, others find it to be an "affordable property" within its category. The comprehensive amenities, tranquil setting, and high level of service contribute to its perceived value.

8. Common Complaints

While overwhelmingly positive, one recurring criticism mentioned by a guest was undisclosed dinner charges. This guest reported that menu prices for dinner were not provided, leading to the belief that dinner might be included, only to face charges upon checkout. Beyond this specific issue, widespread or consistently reported common complaints are not readily apparent in the available reviews, with the overall guest experience often described as positive despite this particular concern.

We had a wonderful two-night stay at Zhiwaling Ascent. The hotel is beautiful, peaceful and perfectly located with lovely views all around. Our room was very comfortable and spotless, making it easy to relax after a day of exploring. The staff were incredibly kind and welcoming, always ready to help with a smile. I was excited for the Sunday BBQ at Ascent Thimphu, especially because Misty was performing. The place looks nice, but the experience didn’t live up to the price. The ticket said welcome cocktail included, yet only one specific cocktail was free—anything else was charged, which felt misleading. Food was average, tea was bland, and a Sprite served in a water glass cost Nu. 500, which is unreasonabl...

Very nice small hotel with beautiful rooms. It is part of the School of Hospitality so many of the staff are interns, but they do a very good job. The location is out of town, but the grounds are nice. Meals are good. Good place to stay in Thimpu if you have a car.

Very nice hotel a little outside the center of Thimpu, in a quiet and beautiful area. Huge rooms, super comfortable and clean with a nice bathtub as well. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Restaurant was good, on the pricier side for Bhutan, but in line with the offering (unlike written in a previous review, prices were very clear from the menu and there were several price options available). To start with the positive, the rooms are beautiful and most of the employees of the place very friendly and helpful. However, the one point which made the entire stay unenjoyable in the end and created a very bitter taste was how they ripped us off with the dinner charges. First, they never mentioned the price of the dinner to us and their menus consisted just of a set menu with no prices whatsoe...
