Expert Review: W Rome

W Rome, a Michelin Key Selected property, offers a modern and vibrant luxury experience in the heart of the Eternal City. Since its opening in December 2021, the hotel has garnered significant attention for its distinctive style, excellent service, and prime location.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for W Rome is overwhelmingly positive, with an average overall rating of 4.7 out of 5 stars on Marriott.com, and 9.0 out of 10 on Trip.com. Guests frequently describe their stays as "unforgettable," "incredible," and praise the hotel as a "perfect Rome home base." The sentiment leans towards a sophisticated and contemporary luxury experience that distinguishes itself from more traditional Roman hotels.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently laud several aspects of W Rome:

  • Design & Vibe: The hotel is celebrated for its impeccable, eclectic, and contemporary design, blending vibrancy with a more grown-up and classy aesthetic compared to older W properties. Common areas are described as dynamic and inviting, encouraging social interaction.
  • Rooftop Pool & Bar: The rooftop plunge pool and Seu Pizza con Vista are significant draws, offering stunning views of Rome and a pleasant retreat from the city's hustle. It's a unique amenity for Rome hotels.
  • Service & Staff: The staff receives widespread praise for being friendly, warm, professional, attentive, and incredibly helpful, often going "above and beyond" for guests.
  • Location: The hotel's central yet quiet location near major attractions like the Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain is highly valued.

3. Room Quality

W Rome features 147 rooms and 15 suites, ranging from "Fabulous" rooms to the "Extreme WOW Suite." Rooms are generally described as well-designed, clean, and comfortable, featuring elevated materials like wooden herringbone floors and all-marble bathrooms. Amenities often include Dyson hairdryers, W-typical toiletries (MOMO), Illy coffee machines, kettles, and fully stocked minibars. Suites, like the Extreme WOW Suite, can be exceptionally spacious, boasting huge outdoor terraces with dining areas and sun lounges. However, a common point of feedback is that standard rooms can be on the smaller side (around 23-25 sqm), which is noted by guests and acknowledged by hotel management, attributing it to the central city location. Some guests also mentioned that rooms can be a bit dark.

4. Dining Experience

W Rome offers diverse culinary options:

  • Giano Restaurant: This Sicilian-inspired restaurant, helmed by Michelin-starred chef Ciccio Sultano, occupies the ground floor and a charming courtyard. It's praised for its refined bites and authentic Italian dining experience, with staff being accommodating even for specific dietary needs like plant-based diets.
  • Seu Pizza con Vista: Located on the rooftop, this pizzeria offers delectable pizzas with "to die for" views of the Roman skyline, particularly at sunset.
  • Zucchero X Fabrizio Fiorani: This ground-floor boutique café and patisserie by renowned pastry chef Fabrizio Fiorani provides excellent coffee and sweet treats.
  • Breakfast: The breakfast experience is highly rated, often described as "great" and "spectacular." It typically includes a buffet along with an à la carte menu item, with options like chia pudding, maritozzo, eggs Benedict, and organic eggs. For Marriott Bonvoy Platinum, Titanium, and Ambassador elite members, breakfast is often included.
  • W Lounge: Situated between reception and Giano Restaurant's terrace, the W Lounge is a stylish spot for drinks, with Art Deco-inspired lighting and DJ sets at night.

5. Service & Staff

The service at W Rome is consistently highlighted as a major strength. Guests frequently commend the staff for being "amazing," "attentive," "friendly," "warm," "knowledgeable," and "professional." Concierges are ready to help with travel needs and bookings. Guests appreciate the personal touches, with staff remembering their names and proactively assisting with requests. The commitment to inclusivity, including gender-neutral bathrooms, has also been noted positively.

6. Location & Accessibility

W Rome is located in Ludovisi, an upscale and relatively quiet neighborhood in the northern part of the city center. It's conveniently situated for sightseeing, being a short walk (a few minutes to 10 minutes) from the Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain. Other major attractions like the Pantheon (20 minutes) and the Roman Forum (25 minutes) are also within walking distance. The Barbieri Metro Station (A train) is just two stops from Rome Termini station, offering good transport links. A Hop-on-Hop-off bus stop is also reportedly just around the corner.

7. Value & Pricing

Rooms at W Rome typically start around €485 ($512) per night, with rates varying significantly depending on the season, reaching upwards of €700-€1200 during peak periods. Marriott Bonvoy points can be redeemed, with standard rooms requiring around 71,500 to 110,000 points per night. While some guests find the hotel to be a "high price point," many feel it offers good value for the money due to the exceptional service, design, and amenities, rating its value at 4.4 out of 5 on Marriott.com. Promotional offers, such as savings for longer stays or additional credits for booking suites, can enhance the value.

8. Common Complaints

Despite the overwhelmingly positive feedback, some recurring criticisms include:

  • Room Size: Standard rooms are often described as being on the smaller side, which can be a disappointment for some guests.
  • Noise Levels: While the location is generally quiet, some guests have reported noise from events in the lobby bar or from a disco party, with the beat being strong due to the hotel's architecture.
  • Air Conditioning Issues: A few guests have reported problems with the air conditioning not cooling sufficiently, even after moving rooms.
  • Lack of Spa: While the hotel has an impressive 24-hour gym with Technogym equipment and fitness classes, it does not have an on-site spa, which may be a drawback for some.
  • Inconsistent Room Service: One review noted inconsistent quality in room service orders over several days.
  • Elevator Glitches: Minor issues with the elevator not working or requiring staff assistance have been reported.

What a gorgeous, elegant hotel. If you’re familiar with the W brand, you will know they’re known for their “quirkiness” which this hotel follows but in an Italian way. The moment you enter, a lively palette of colour across the chairs, carpets, and furnishings sets the tone, enhanced by the gracious presence of attentive staff ready to assist. We were quickly checked into our room and surprised w...

Super cool hotel in a great location near Via Veneto, easy to walk everywhere. The vibe is modern and fun but still feels luxury. Rooms are stylish, comfortable, and quiet at night. Staff , specially welcome Ambassadors were really friendly and helpful the whole stay. Breakfast was great. Overall, a fun, lively 5-star experience not your typical classic Rome hotel.

This place is truly exceptional. The design is fantastic, the hospitality is impeccable, and the restaurant is simply amazing. But what sets it apart is the exceptional service. The concierge, Aika, went above and beyond to make sure my grandmother had a memorable time in Rome. She even gave her a special gift waiting in her room, which was a very thoughtful and unexpected touch. This experience h...

From checking in to checking out everyone was amazing. The customer service was just amazing. The best part is the concierge team making sure that we got our bags to the room and setting up or departure by retrieving our bags and get taxi. Definitely will come back again. Thank you

Very nice stay to finish up our Rome trip! From our initial contact with the concierge regarding storage of luggage to scheduling a taxi to the airport, the staff stepped up every single time. The restaurant was excellent-food and staff. We ate every meal the last day of our stay and definitely come back next time we're in town.
