Expert Review: Vestige Son Vell
Vestige Son Vell in Menorca, a Michelin Key Selected property, is widely acclaimed as a luxurious and serene escape, blending historic charm with modern elegance across its sprawling agricultural estate. Guests consistently praise its tranquil ambiance, meticulous restoration, and commitment to providing an exceptional experience.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The general consensus for Vestige Son Vell is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing it as "exceptional," "wonderful," "superb," and "an oasis of calm". Reviewers often highlight its authentic, quiet luxury and the sense of being immersed in a peaceful paradise. On platforms like Hotels.com, it boasts an exceptional 10/10 rating, while Booking.com shows strong scores, including 9.8 for cleanliness and 9.9 for comfort.
2. Key Highlights
Guests particularly love the hotel's stunning 150-180-hectare grounds, featuring exquisitely landscaped gardens, olive groves, and citrus trees. The meticulous restoration of the 18th-century Palladian-style manor house and converted barns is a significant draw, preserving original features while integrating contemporary luxury. Other cherished highlights include the two swimming pools, the farm-to-fork dining concept, an outdoor yoga platform, and the unique experience of an open-air cinema. The tranquility and sense of being secluded, even when the hotel is fully booked, are also frequently mentioned.
3. Room Quality
The 34 rooms, including 28 suites, are spacious, elegantly decorated, and designed for comfort. They blend original features like high ceilings and sandstone walls with contemporary touches, employing neutral and earthy tones, natural fabrics, and wood. Many accommodations, especially those in the converted old barns and new buildings, offer generous private outdoor spaces, such as terraces or gardens, some with cabanas and loungers. Bathrooms are notably spacious, often featuring double basins and large showers that can double as tubs. Rooms come equipped with amenities like coffee machines, minibars, flat-screen TVs, free bottled water, and Rituals bath products. Sleep quality is frequently rated as exceptional.
4. Dining Experience
Vestige Son Vell offers a remarkable culinary journey with a strong farm-to-fork ethos, utilizing ingredients from its on-site organic garden and local Menorcan suppliers. There are two main restaurants:
- Vermell: Meaning 'red' in the local dialect, this fine-dining establishment specializes in gourmet Menorcan cuisine with a contemporary twist and influences from mainland Spain, Britain, and France. Executive Chef Joan Bagur, known for his inventive approach, oversees the exquisite menus, which often include tasting options with wine pairings. Live music frequently enhances the evening dining experience.
- Sa Clarisa: This casual, alfresco spot is open all day, serving light and refreshing Mediterranean dishes, summer favorites, salads, and pasta. Breakfast at Sa Clarisa is described as a relaxed affair, featuring super smoothies, detox juices, gourmet egg dishes, local cheeses, charcuterie, and fresh fruit. The estate also has three bars, including a poolside bar for daytime refreshments and Bar Son Vell for evening aperitifs and cocktails with a Menorcan twist.
5. Service & Staff
The service and staff at Vestige Son Vell are consistently highlighted as exceptional, friendly, attentive, and personal, without being intrusive. Guests appreciate the personalized recommendations and the staff's readiness to assist with any requests. While some feedback mentioned that some keen young staff might benefit from more training and experience, the overall sentiment is one of warm and welcoming hospitality.
6. Location & Accessibility
Vestige Son Vell is nestled on a rural 180-hectare working farm on Menorca's southwest coast, providing a truly tranquil setting. It is conveniently located about a 20-minute drive from the charming old town of Ciutadella. The hotel offers easy access to the historic Camí de Cavalls, ideal for hiking, horseback riding, or mountain biking, and is a short 10-20 minute walk to the sea and the unspoiled Cala Son Vell. Menorca Mahón Airport (MAH) is approximately a 55-minute drive away, with the hotel offering transfers or assisting with car rental. The approach to the property involves navigating narrow dirt country lanes, which some guests noted can be challenging with oncoming traffic.
7. Value & Pricing
Vestige Son Vell is positioned as a luxury destination, and guests generally find the experience to be worth the cost. While specific pricing can vary by season and room type, rates in the shoulder season (e.g., May) have been noted to range from approximately 578€ for a Deluxe Classic room to 1,428€ for a Grand Suite per day, which typically includes an à la carte breakfast. The meticulous restoration, extensive amenities, and high level of service contribute to its perceived value as a premium offering in Menorca.
8. Common Complaints
While guest feedback is overwhelmingly positive, a few minor criticisms have been noted. The unpaved, narrow dirt road leading to the property can be a point of minor inconvenience, especially when encountering oncoming vehicles. Some guests have suggested that while the staff are friendly, additional training and experience could further enhance efficiency. Additionally, one reviewer expressed a preference for the historic manor house over some of the newer buildings, feeling they disrupted the traditional atmosphere. There was also an isolated comment regarding disorganized cleaning staff and cleanliness issues in one instance.

I had planned a surprise proposal for my girlfriend during our first trip to Menorca, so the pressure was on to choose the right hotel. To say that Vestige Son Vell delivered is an understatement. Nestled along the pristine coastline of the Mediterranean, the hotel is like a secret haven—secluded yet effortlessly sophisticated. Upon arrival, we were welcomed with a chilled drink and warm smiles, the kind of hospitality that immediately makes you feel both pampered and at home. Wow! Wow! Wow! Stunning hotel. Incredible service. Breathtaking surroundings. Peaceful and magical. Everything perfect! The only "problem" is to get there. Also to reach the beach. The hotel has bikes to explore around and go to the beach as it's impossible to do it by car. Highly recommended!

Had to cancel 4 days before the reservation due to a family death. We were honeymooning and this hotel was one of our stays. We had to come back home for the death and they refused to work with us on any cancellation or waiver for this circumstance which shows their minimal level of empathy and care

Stayed August 2025 - amazing property and well designed. Service and staff were excellent. I wish that the dining menus had more options, especially for lunch. The property is an easy taxi ride to Ciutadella, which had many great restaurants. More families/children than expected. Also stayed at the sister property, Son Ermita - highly recommend staying at both in Menorca.

Probably the most incredible hotel we’ve ever stayed at. The property is simply stunning, the restaurants were one of a kind, and the staff was delightful. The location on the island is also perfect – manageable drives to all the best beaches and to Ciutadella (although you’ll never want to leave Son Vell once you enter the gates!). We cant wait to come back!
