Expert Review: Ursulino Valletta
Ursulino Valletta, a distinguished Michelin Key Selected property, consistently earns high praise for its exceptional service, prime location, and breathtaking rooftop views, establishing itself as a premier boutique accommodation in Malta's historic capital.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
Ursulino Valletta enjoys an overwhelmingly positive reputation, frequently described with terms like "superb" and "excellent" by guests. It boasts high ratings, with a 9.3 "Superb" score from over 900 reviews on Booking.com and a 5.0 "Excellent" on Tripadvisor. Guests often commend it as a luxurious B&B offering 5-star hotel standards with a personalized touch. The general sentiment is one of delight and satisfaction, with many guests expressing a strong desire to return.
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently rave about several standout features:
- Rooftop Terrace: The magnificent rooftop terrace offers stunning 360-degree panoramic views of Valletta's skyline, including the majestic Grand Harbour and Fort St. Elmo. It's a favorite spot for breakfast and the complimentary evening aperitivo.
- Exceptional Service: The staff's warmth, efficiency, and attentiveness are frequently highlighted as a major asset.
- Central Location: The hotel's position in the heart of Valletta provides easy access to major attractions.
- Unique Design & Concept: Housed in a beautifully restored traditional Maltese townhouse, Ursulino Valletta blends Baroque architecture with modern luxury. It operates on an "Albergo Diffuso" concept, aiming to provide a luxury B&B experience.
- Complimentary Aperitivo: A highly appreciated touch is the complimentary evening aperitivo, featuring prosecco and Italian antipasti served on the rooftop terrace.
3. Room Quality
Ursulino Valletta offers 11 stylish and well-equipped rooms, designed with a contemporary flair. Rooms feature air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs with satellite channels, a minibar fridge, and coffee and tea making facilities. For comfort, bathrobes, slippers, and Molton Brown toiletries are provided. Some rooms offer sea views, while others provide direct access to an internal courtyard. The design often plays with a striking contrast between traditional and modern interiors, using timber paneling, custom-made steel elements, and glass partitions. While generally spacious and comfortable, some rooms, particularly on lower floors or facing internal courtyards, may have limited natural light. Some guests have also noted that the "bathroom-in-the-bedroom" concept in certain rooms might lead to dampness or noise from extraction fans.
4. Dining Experience
The dining experience at Ursulino Valletta centers around its highly-rated continental breakfast, often served on the spectacular rooftop terrace, weather permitting. Guests consistently praise the breakfast for its quality and variety, including an egg station and Sicilian sweets. While the hotel excels in breakfast and the evening aperitivo, it does not offer lunch or dinner services, with guests encouraged to explore Valletta's abundant dining options.
5. Service & Staff
The service and staff at Ursulino Valletta receive glowing reviews, frequently cited as one of the hotel's strongest assets. Guests describe the staff as "warm and efficient," "friendly and helpful," and "exceptional". Many highlight the personalized service, noting that staff go above and beyond, such as offering early check-in or late check-out without charge. Their attentiveness to detail and willingness to assist with any request significantly contribute to a memorable stay.
6. Location & Accessibility
The hotel boasts an "excellent location" at 82A St. Ursula Street, placing it ideally in the heart of Valletta. It's just a few minutes' walk from major attractions like the Upper Barrakka Gardens (5 min walk), St. John's Co-Cathedral (3 min walk), Casa Rocca Piccola (3 min walk), and the Grand Harbour (1 min walk). The street itself is known as "the street of steps," which contributes to a quiet atmosphere as it limits through-traffic. While this adds to its charm, it's a point for guests with mobility challenges to consider, though an efficient lift provides access throughout the multi-story property. Malta International Airport is a convenient 15-minute drive away.
7. Value & Pricing
Ursulino Valletta is often seen as offering excellent value for the luxurious experience it provides. While prices can vary based on dates, a stay can start from approximately €100-€243 per night. Guests generally feel it's worth the cost, particularly given the high standard of accommodation, exceptional service, and prime location. It's positioned as luxury B&B accommodation aiming for 5-star hotel standards.
8. Common Complaints
Despite overwhelming positive feedback, a few recurring criticisms or issues are occasionally mentioned:
- Limited Natural Light in Some Rooms: Some ground-floor or internal courtyard-facing rooms may receive limited natural light, which can make them feel a bit dim.
- Open-Plan Bathroom Design: The design of some bathrooms, integrated into the bedroom space, has been noted to potentially lead to dampness or noise issues from extraction fans, potentially disturbing a sleeping companion.
- Lack of Dedicated Common Areas: Apart from the rooftop terrace, there isn't a dedicated bar or common seating area, which some guests might miss, particularly during the colder months when the terrace is less utilized.
- "Street of Steps" for Mobility: While contributing to its quiet charm, St. Ursula Street's stepped nature might be challenging for individuals with significant mobility impairments.

We stayed here over a long weekend, it was a pleasant experience, the hotel is in the old city center of Valletta, near all the main spots, including the Gozo fast ferry terminal. The rooms have high ceilings, spacious, comfortable beds, and are very clean. The breakfast was amazing, quality products, good coffee and the roof terrace is perfect to have an idea of the city center. The staff was ple...

We stayed for 3 nights; the hotel is ideally situated near the seafront & St George’s Sq (3 minutes walk to either). Very clean, modern, mini bar, tea & coffee-making facilities, cordial staff, and an amazing terrace where you can enjoy the bottle of wine they give you gratis on arrival. I must say that all the staff there, whatever they are paid, all deserve a pay rise (especially Yitka at recept...

This place was wonderful. starting from the location, it was near the center of the city and the co-cathedral. The premises and the entire building was very well taken care off, nothing was broken and everything smelled wonderfully. The biggest asset of the hotel though is the staff that mans it. everyone, starting from the reception ladies to the cleaning team and breakfast preparation team/waitr...

Really enjoyed our stay. Rooms were a great size. Fairly quiet which was nice. Great spot a street or two away from everything. The young lady who checked us in was lovely. Great roof top area and breakfast included that we could have up there. Would recommend.

From the minute we were collected from the airport by the taxi transfer organised by the hotel and our return transfer, everything we encountered at this splendid boutique hotel was brilliant. The rooms are quite spacious and spotlessly clean. They have the best shower. We booked the double room on the ground floor which had an outside terrace to enjoy a drink in the afternoon. The hotel is ad...
