Trustindex.io also indicates a very high proportion of 5-star reviews, with many guests stating they would "definitely be back" and that their stay was "unforgettable."
2. Key Highlights

- Relaxing Atmosphere & Amenities: The resort offers a truly relaxing environment, making it a perfect place to "rest and find yourself again." Key amenities include a serene riverside pool, Basil's Bar, a well-equipped gym, tennis courts, and a highly-regarded spa.
- Family-Friendly Focus: Umngazi is well-regarded as a family-orientated resort, providing dedicated children's programs, caretakers, activity rooms, a playground, and a splash pool, ensuring entertainment for all ages.
3. Room Quality
The accommodation at Umngazi consists of 68 spacious, thatch-roofed bungalows that blend traditional construction with contemporary design. Guests describe the rooms as "beautiful," "lovely, clean and comfortable," and "tastefully decorated." Many bungalows offer "sweeping views" of the surroundings, including indigenous gardens, the river, or the ocean.
Features commonly found include:
- En-suite bathrooms, often with an outdoor shower.
- Private patios or balconies.
- Comfortable furnishings and plush bedding.
- Modern amenities such as ceiling fans, keypad safes, and tea- and coffee-making facilities. Some chalets also include a bar fridge and hairdryer.
- Specific room categories cater to different needs, including child-friendly Garden, River, and Sea bungalows, and adults-only Honeymoon, Emlonyeni, and Ntabeni bungalows, some of which feature private plunge pools and lounges.
4. Dining Experience
Dining at Umngazi Hotel & Spa is a highlight, with all rates inclusive of three "delicious, fresh and wholesome meals" per day, along with mid-morning and mid-afternoon snacks.
- Breakfast & Lunch: These are typically generous buffet offerings, catering to diverse dietary needs with a wide selection of both light and hearty options.

5. Service & Staff

6. Location & Accessibility
Umngazi Hotel & Spa boasts a unique and secluded location on the Wild Coast, approximately 20 km south of Port St. Johns in the Eastern Cape. It's situated at the mouth of the Mngazi River, "mere yards from the beach," surrounded by breathtaking landscapes of indigenous forests, rolling hills, and the Indian Ocean.
However, accessibility is a common point of discussion:
- Driving: The drive from major cities is long (e.g., 12 hours from Johannesburg, 6 hours from Durban). Importantly, the "last 10km road leading to Umngazi Hotel & Spa is not always in the best condition," requiring visitors to "take it slowly and drive carefully." Detour information is provided for areas like Flagstaff and Mthatha to avoid congestion and potential issues.
- Flying: SA Airlink offers daily flights from OR Tambo (Johannesburg) to Mthatha Airport, which is about 90 km from Umngazi. Transfers from Mthatha can be arranged.
- Local Transport: A boat taxi is available to transport guests across the river to access the main beach.
7. Value & Pricing
Guests generally perceive Umngazi Hotel & Spa as offering "excellent value for money" and being "well worth the money," especially considering the inclusion of three meals daily. While one review mentioned the price of accommodation might be "a bit high," the overall sentiment suggests the comprehensive offering justifies the cost. The quality of facilities, service, and the immersive experience in a unique natural setting contribute to this perceived value.
8. Common Complaints
While reviews are overwhelmingly positive, a few recurring issues or criticisms are noted:
- Road Conditions: The most significant and frequently mentioned complaint is the state of the last 10-12 km of road leading to the hotel. It's often described as being in poor condition, requiring careful and slow driving, which can add stress to the journey.
- Wi-Fi Connectivity: Due to its remote location, Wi-Fi connectivity can be an issue. It's generally accessible in public areas but not reliably available in the hotel rooms.
- Limited Dinner Choices: One guest mentioned that despite the inclusion of three meals, the choice of dishes for dinner might be "limited and does not cater for all tastes."
- Missed Activities: A minor point raised was that guests might miss out on some activities if the hotel is not more forthcoming with all the services and activities provided.
In conclusion, Umngazi Hotel & Spa stands as a highly recommended destination on the Wild Coast, offering an exceptional blend of natural beauty, comfort, and outstanding hospitality, making the challenging journey worthwhile for most visitors.

Where to even begin to describe Umngazi? As a honeymoon destination, it was truly out of this world. We had been excited leading up to our trip, but the resort completely exceeded our wildest expectations. From the moment we arrived, we didn't have to worry about a thing; it felt like we were treated like royalty. The staff were incredibly organized, welcoming, and friendly, ensuring every part o...

We spent three evenings at Umngazi. So happy to have found such a beautiful place. Our cottage had a sea view, all time of the day and night we could look at the sea. Loved the beautifully kept gardens. The thatched cottages. Loved the furnishings. White floor. White furniture. Minimalist, peaceful. Food was amazing. 3 meals a day: everything possible was available, in spite of the remoteness to t...

It’s with a heavy heart to write a bad review about such a breathtaking place. We booked the delux honeymoon suite for five nights and on day four were asked to move to a normal bungalow as they double booked our room. That means check out by 10am and only have a room available again at 14:00. Four hours of nothing? Communication was non existent, asked on three occasions to speak to a manager. No...

Reply: Thank you for your response. My feedback on the 2025 Vukandlule Santa Clause intitative speaks to lived experience, not perception. An experience that was curated, approved, and delivered by Umngazi Hotel as appropriate for the local village. It is therefore reasonable to engage with it as such, rather than reframing it as a difference in interpretation. There is also an important distincti...

If you want an "old school" holiday, where priority is children having fun and spending hours swimming, playing with others, being entertained, fishing AND NOT PLAYING on digital equipment then Umngazi is Heaven. There is NOTHING to do except Rest and Relax for teens, kiddies and adults. LOVED the holiday and will definitely return. Thank you to ALL the caring, kind staff!
