Expert Review: The Victoria Falls Hotel

The Victoria Falls Hotel, a distinguished Michelin Key Selected property in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, is widely celebrated for its rich colonial charm, breathtaking views, and exceptional service. Often referred to as "The Grand Old Lady of the Falls," the hotel offers a luxurious and historic retreat just a short distance from the iconic natural wonder.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The overall sentiment for The Victoria Falls Hotel is overwhelmingly positive, with many guests rating it as "excellent" or "superb." Review scores consistently highlight its prime location, cleanliness, comfort, and the high quality of its staff and facilities. While some guests acknowledge its premium pricing, many conclude that the unique experience and high standards make it "worth it."

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently praise several aspects of The Victoria Falls Hotel:

  • Location: Its unparalleled proximity to Victoria Falls, offering magnificent views of the Victoria Falls Bridge and the mist from the falls, is a major draw. A private walkway from the hotel gardens directly to the falls is a significant advantage.
  • Design & Ambiance: The hotel's Edwardian architecture and colonial elegance transport guests back in time, creating a unique and charming atmosphere. Beautifully manicured gardens, grand public spaces, and opulent decor contribute to its allure.
  • Service: The staff are frequently described as "unbeatable," "friendly," "helpful," and "attentive," going above and beyond to ensure a memorable stay.
  • Amenities: Highlights include a stunning outdoor swimming pool, a full-service spa, and the famous high tea on Stanley's Terrace, which offers magical views. The hotel also features four distinct restaurants.

3. Room Quality

Guest feedback on room quality is generally positive, with descriptions of rooms being "modern and comfortable," "spacious," "clean and crisp," and "elegantly decorated." Many rooms offer in-room safes, minibars, satellite TV, and free Wi-Fi. Some guests particularly appreciate the beautiful tile floors and the addition of mosquito nets. However, some older reviews have noted that certain rooms, particularly classic double rooms, might be smaller than contemporary 5-star rooms and could benefit from renovation, mentioning antique and loud air conditioning or tired bathrooms. More recent reviews, however, often highlight refurbishment and comfort. The "New Stables Signature Wing" offers more personalized service and beautifully decorated rooms, though they might still be perceived as smaller by some.

4. Dining Experience

The Victoria Falls Hotel offers a "connoisseur's delight of dining options" with internationally-trained chefs.

  • Breakfast: The breakfast buffet, often served at Jungle Junction, is frequently described as "amazing" with an "unbelievable wide selection" and beautiful views.
  • Dinner: The hotel boasts the elegant Livingstone Room, offering a 7-course degustation or à la carte menu with an extensive wine list. Jungle Junction also serves dinner daily, accompanied by traditional African music. Stanley's Terrace is a popular spot for enjoying dinner with a view. While many find the food to be "delicious" and "outstanding," some older feedback mentioned a limited choice of decent but not memorable dishes on the terrace. The high tea on the terrace is particularly famous and a "must-do" experience.
  • Room Service: An extensive room service menu is available 24/7.

5. Service & Staff

The staff at The Victoria Falls Hotel consistently receive high praise. They are described as "lovely," "incredibly friendly and helpful," "attentive," "thoughtful and meticulous," and "top-notch." Guests often highlight the exceptional hospitality and the staff's dedication to making their stay enjoyable. The pleasant reception staff and efficient coordination of day trips and taxis are also noted.

6. Location & Accessibility

The hotel's location is a significant asset, earning a high rating for its accessibility. It is situated just 1.2 miles (about a short car ride or walk) from Victoria Falls, offering stunning views of "The Smoke that Thunders" and the Victoria Falls Bridge. The private pathway to the falls enhances convenience for guests. The hotel is also described as being in a safe area, within walking distance of shops. An airport shuttle service is available.

7. Value & Pricing

The Victoria Falls Hotel is considered a luxury property, and its pricing reflects this. While many guests find it "pricy," they often conclude that the "historic atmosphere," "excellent service," and overall "grand" experience make it "worth the splurge." Some room types, like a Classic room, can start from around $459 per night, while others, such as a Stables Signature Wing Deluxe Room, may begin at $703 per night, excluding inclusions. There are some recent comments suggesting that the hotel, while beautiful, might be "grossly overpriced" and not always offering optimal value compared to other luxury options in the area.

8. Common Complaints

While largely positive, some recurring issues or criticisms have been noted:

  • Room Condition (Historical vs. Modern Expectations): While many rooms are refurbished and comfortable, some older reviews and occasional recent comments suggest that certain aspects, like small bathrooms or older air conditioning units, might not meet modern 5-star luxury expectations. Some guests also mentioned noise from plumbing or water pipes.
  • Service Inconsistencies: Although the staff is generally excellent, isolated incidents of inefficient service, such as issues with inoperative room keys, wine list availability, or lukewarm coffee, have been reported.
  • Dining/High Tea Value: Some guests have found the high tea, specifically in terms of presentation and portion sizes, to be disappointing and not commensurate with the price.
  • Check-in/Check-out Procedures: Some guests reported that check-in and check-out can be time-consuming, and the hotel might not accommodate early check-in or late check-out requests.
  • Insect Control: A few reviews mentioned a desire for more insect control in outdoor eating areas.

Absolutely sublime!! You don't visit this place if you are acquainted with hooliganism. It is classy! The staff is so professional and friendly. They overlook your sweaty casual appearance, although you will certainly feel under-dressed. Quiet, collected and classy.

Beyond Excellent! Its like stepping back in time.. this hotel was first built to house the people building the Victoria Falls Bridge in 1905. There are so many historical things to read on the corridor walls you get distracted. The service is five star and the building is very well maintained. You can't beat a Zimbabwean welcome. A must stay in Vic Falls.

We stayed at the hotel on 14/1/2026. We also stayed at this hotel many years ago at which time it was a proper 5 star. Sadly those days are long gone. The hotel and rooms/bathrooms are dated and needs urgent attention. The flies around your food and on the food(especially the breakfast area) is disappointing. Its also easy to overcome this problem but management does not seem to care. The congrega...

I dealt directly with the conferencing manager Tracy to book and pay and then also when it wasn't followed through , she facilitated a refund I never received. Upon questioning , she told me that the bank did not release the money . I have tried numerous times since then to follow up but to no ...

The hotel itself is truly wonderful. I genuinely believe that this hotel alone is worth visiting Zimbabwe for. It beautifully preserves the nostalgia of the early 1900s and offers a rich opportunity to fully immerse oneself in the spirit of the Belle Époque. The photographs, paintings, and historical displays placed throughout the property further enhance its aesthetic and cultural value. One of ...
