Expert Review: The Slate

The Slate in Phuket, Thailand, a distinguished Michelin Key One-Key property, consistently receives high praise for its unique design, exceptional service, and tranquil atmosphere, making it a standout luxury resort.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The Slate generally garners exceptional reviews, with many guests rating it as "Superb" or "Exceptional" (averaging around 9.0 to 10 on various platforms). Guests frequently describe it as a "luxurious oasis" and a "unique and magical place" that offers an "outstanding stay". It has also earned the prestigious TripAdvisor Travellers' Choice Best of the Best award for "Out of the Ordinary" stays, placing it in the top 1% of hotels globally. The overall sentiment is overwhelmingly positive, with many guests expressing a desire to return.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently laud The Slate for several key aspects:

  • Design: The hotel's "industrial-chic" aesthetic, inspired by Phuket's tin-mining heritage and designed by Bill Bensley, is a major draw. The bold architecture, sculptural artwork, and unique blend of exposed beams, blackened metals, and polished concrete with Thai silks and rattan furnishings create a "whimsical" and "extraordinary" environment.
  • Pools: The resort features three stunning outdoor pools, including two adults-only pools and a family-friendly lagoon pool with a gentle slope and a waterfall. Guests appreciate the ample space, availability of sun-loungers, and the attentive staff who provide cold towels and ice lollies poolside.
  • Spa (Coqoon Spa): The award-winning Coqoon Spa is a significant highlight, offering a serene and pampering experience. Its unique "Nest" treatment room, intricately woven and seemingly suspended in mid-air, provides an ethereal setting for treatments.
  • Service & Staff: The "impeccable," "attentive," "professional," and "friendly" staff are frequently praised for going "above and beyond" to make guests feel welcome and cared for.
  • Proximity to Airport & Beach: Its convenient location, just a 5 to 15-minute drive from Phuket International Airport, is highly appreciated, especially for those with short stays or families. The hotel also offers two gates that lead directly across the road to the quiet Nai Yang Beach, providing easy access to sand, sunbeds, and local eateries.

3. Room Quality

The rooms at The Slate are described as spacious, beautifully designed, and incredibly comfortable. They are uniquely decorated with original art pieces and locally crafted furnishings, featuring rich wood and cool stone accents. Each of the six different room grades comes with modern conveniences such as high-speed internet, satellite TV, and air conditioning.

  • Pearl Bed Suites: These 65 sqm rooms are popular, boasting plush king-sized beds, stylish interiors, and expansive private balconies with oversized daybeds and outdoor bathtubs overlooking lush gardens.
  • Private Pool Villas/Pavilions: These ultra-luxe and generous villas offer a high degree of privacy. They are often split into two pavilions with separate living and sleeping areas, private pools, garden courtyards, and sometimes features like jacuzzis, saunas, steam rooms, and even a 24-hour butler service. The outdoor waterfall showers are also a noted luxury.
  • Amenities: Common room amenities include minibars, wine cellars, beach bags, and own-label toiletries. Turndown service often includes lighting incense to repel mosquitoes.

4. Dining Experience

The Slate offers a diverse and high-quality dining experience across its six main dining outlets and multiple bars.

  • Tin Mine: This open-sided restaurant serves extensive international buffet breakfasts, featuring made-to-order pancakes, fresh pastries, noodles, dim sum, and cooked-to-order eggs. Guests rave about the quality and variety of breakfast. It also offers dinner with rich curries and crispy pork belly.
  • Black Ginger: Considered one of Phuket's best fine-dining Thai restaurants, Black Ginger offers a truly unique experience. Dinner begins with a short raft ride across a private lily pond, setting a seductive and atmospheric scene. The menu features flavour-packed modern Thai and Phuketian dishes crafted by Chef Piak, who has over three decades of experience.
  • Rivet & Rebar: Offers an intimate dining experience with a Japanese-inspired menu, including sashimi and Wagyu beef, in a setting that incorporates vintage horse carriages.
  • Tongkah Tin Syndicate: A relaxed, open-air snooker hall serving snacks and cocktails.
  • Moo's Kitchen: Offers Thai cooking classes where guests can pick their own ingredients from a local market.
  • Poolside Dining: Guests enjoy leisurely lunches by the lagoon pool.
  • Pricing: While the food and drinks within the resort, particularly breakfast and fine dining at Black Ginger, can be expensive compared to local options, many guests feel it is worth the cost due to the quality and experience.

5. Service & Staff

The service at The Slate is consistently highlighted as a major strength. Guests describe the staff as "impeccable," "professional," "friendly," and "attentive". They are noted for going "above and beyond" to ensure guests feel welcomed and cared for, from the moment of arrival with welcome drinks and lotus flower arrangements, to daily turndown services. Personalized touches, such as staff remembering guest preferences and engaging in friendly conversations, contribute to the exceptional hospitality.

6. Location & Accessibility

The Slate is conveniently located on Nai Yang Beach on Phuket's northwest coast, just a 5 to 15-minute drive from Phuket International Airport. Despite its proximity to the airport, the resort is generally quiet, with guests reporting hearing only birdsong. The resort offers direct access to Nai Yang Beach, a quiet and laid-back stretch of sand with local restaurants, shops, and massage services. This area is considered less touristic than other parts of Phuket. While the resort offers a secluded oasis feel, exploring other parts of the island typically requires a car or booking tours, which can be arranged through the hotel.

7. Value & Pricing

Many guests consider The Slate to be worth the cost, despite its luxury pricing. As of February 2026, prices for a 1-night stay for 2 adults can start from around $351.9, excluding taxes and fees, though prices are subject to change. Some reviewers mention finding good deals, especially for longer stays or by booking directly, which can offer perks like free airport transfers and spa discounts. While internal dining can be expensive, guests appreciate that the resort offers dining options covering various price points.

8. Common Complaints

While overwhelmingly positive, some minor and infrequent complaints include:

  • Navigation: Some guests found it "very hard to find ways around the complex even with a map" due to its extensive grounds.
  • Noise from Beach: Rooms located closer to the beach might experience some noise from nearby bars and restaurants, though this is mentioned as not bothering all guests.
  • Dark Design Theme: The industrial design, while a highlight for many, was considered "a bit too modern for kids" by some families.
  • Dining Service at Tin Mine: A few past reviews mentioned abysmal dinner service at Tin Mine on buffet nights, with slow drink orders and needing to clear their own plates.
  • Late Check-out Policy: One review noted disappointment regarding a late check-out request not being accommodated, even when the hotel didn't appear fully booked.
  • Private Pool Temperature: One guest noted their private pool was roofed, making it cold and less enjoyable.
  • Coffee Quality: One review mentioned the coffee not being very good.

Excellent hotel, the service was great from the moment I arrived. The room was perfect, the outdoor bath I didn’t use but was really cool. The locations is excellent right on a beach in a relatively quiet area. The pools are really nice and lot of bars/restaurants options.

Amazing stay! The location is perfect, just 5 minutes from the airport and right on a beautiful beach lined with restaurants. The restaurants are good, though it’s worth noting they’re tourist-oriented. Our room was fantastic, spacious, spotless, and very comfortable for all of us (two adults, a four-year-old, and a baby). It had plenty of space and worked perfectly for our family. Every evening ...

We stayed at The Slate for New Year’s Eve to close out our honeymoon travel adventures, and it was truly unforgettable. The Moulin Rouge–themed gala was incredibly fun, with vibrant entertainment, a festive atmosphere, and an impressive spread of food that was both vast and delicious. The entertainment throughout the night was nonstop, and the fireworks show on the beach was completely out of this...
