The Interlude, Melbourne: A "Very Special Stay" Blending History and Luxury

The Interlude, a distinguished One Michelin Key property in Melbourne, offers a truly unique and immersive luxury experience, set within the historic bluestone walls of the former Pentridge Prison. Guests consistently laud its innovative design, exceptional service, and captivating blend of heritage with modern comfort, making it a highly recommended destination for those seeking an extraordinary stay.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for The Interlude is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing it as a "most amazing experience" and a "unique piece of history." It receives high marks across various platforms, with Booking.com ratings reflecting excellent scores for cleanliness (9.4), comfort (9.4), facilities (9.4), and staff (9.2). The Michelin Guide itself recognizes it as "a very special stay," highlighting its excellence in architecture, design, service, personality, value, and contribution to the local area.

2. Key Highlights

Guests are particularly captivated by several standout features:

  • Unique Historical Setting: The hotel's location within the meticulously restored Pentridge Prison is its most compelling highlight. The preservation of original bluestone walls, vaulted red-brick ceilings, and the transformation of prison cells into luxurious suites create a fascinating and intriguing atmosphere.
  • Subterranean Relaxation Pool: The lantern-illuminated or candlelit underground relaxation pool is consistently praised as an "amazing," "fantastic," and "unique" amenity, offering a serene and distinctive wellness experience.
  • Exceptional Service: The staff's hospitality is frequently cited, with guests appreciating their attentiveness, accommodating nature, and willingness to go "out of their way to help."
  • Tailored Experiences: The hotel curates bespoke itineraries and "Story of Place" tours, allowing guests to delve into the prison's history, enjoy wine tastings, and engage with local artisans.

3. Room Quality

The rooms, reimagined from four or five interconnected prison cells, are described as "amazing," "luxurious," and "completely unique" in design. While retaining the imposing heritage bluestone walls and, in some cases, bars on the windows, they seamlessly integrate modern comforts and elegant understated decor. Highlights include:

  • Incredibly comfortable queen-sized beds.
  • Stunning, spacious bathrooms featuring rain showers, premium toiletries (La Gaia Unedited, Hunter Lab), and exquisite finishes.
  • Luxury amenities such as 55-inch Smart TVs with Chromecast, espresso machines, curated minibars with local products, and tea-making kits with specialty blends.
  • The Interlude Sanctuary Suites offer an elevated experience with freestanding stone baths and artisan bath salts. Rooms are also noted for being soundproof.

4. Dining Experience

The Interlude boasts acclaimed dining options that complement its luxurious appeal:

  • North & Common: Housed in the prison's former mess hall, this "hatted modern Australian restaurant" serves exquisite dinner, cocktails, and a "perfect" breakfast, focusing on seasonally led and locally sourced produce. The food is consistently described as "flawless and delicious."
  • Olivine Wine Bar: This unique wine bar, nestled within thick bluestone walls, features a 500-bottle cellar, a knowledgeable in-house sommelier, and offers wine tastings, small plates, and a selection of spirits and cocktails.
  • The Yard: A more casual spot for light eats.

5. Service & Staff

The service at The Interlude is a major strength, garnering exceptionally high ratings for customer service (9.4 on Wheree). Guests frequently highlight the staff as "amazing and very accommodating," "always approachable," and proactive in going "out of their way to help." Reviewers consistently experience a "warm welcome" and appreciate the personalized approach, including the provision of concierge services and a 24-hour front desk.

6. Location & Accessibility

The hotel is situated in Coburg, a northern suburb of Melbourne, within the historic Pentridge Prison precinct, offering a distinct cultural immersion.

  • Public Transport: A tram stop is conveniently located a five-minute walk away on Sydney Road, providing "easy access" to the city center.
  • Airport Access: Melbourne Airport is approximately a 20-minute drive from the hotel.
  • Nearby Attractions: While not in the immediate CBD, attractions like Melbourne Zoo (6-8 km), Melbourne Museum (9 km), and Federation Square (10 km) are accessible. The vibrant Sydney Road strip, with its cafes, bars, and shops, is also nearby.
  • Parking: Private parking is available on-site for AU$25 per night.

7. Value & Pricing

Guests perceive The Interlude as offering good value for money, reflected in an 8.5 rating on Booking.com. While it is a luxury 5-star property, rates typically start from around AU$699 per night for suites, which often include breakfast, a welcome drink, and a selection of signature experiences. This pricing is considered appropriate for the unique, high-quality, and immersive experience it provides as a Michelin Key property.

8. Common Complaints

While overwhelmingly positive, a few minor points have been noted:

  • One guest reported a relatively long wait time of nearly 45 minutes for food to arrive in the restaurant.
  • Due to the historic nature of the building, the hotel is unsuitable for guests with reduced mobility.
  • Some online review platforms may still be accumulating sufficient "verified guest reviews" to generate aggregate scores, despite the property generally receiving high praise from individual reviewers.

Loved the luxurious decor and sultry feel to this hotel. Considering there isn't much to do beyond the facility, it would be nice if the hotel had catered for this and had a functional entertainment area of some sorts, even if it was just a snack / coffee bar serving cake and light refreshments, or a reading / sitting area. The cleaners need to frequent the downstairs section by the pool and gym i...

The place is beautifully designed, lighting, furnitures are so beautiful. But the level of staffs and services did not match the image of hotel, akward and casual. Overall places are dark theme so cleaning not spotless I would say. Really love the places and hope more ppl get to enjoy this before its rundown. Please step up.

The interlude experience was just perfect. Pool incredible , staff fabulous , wine bar great also , everyone was warm and the rooms were just incredible given they punched through those cell walls. Location is great for all you need in the northern suburbs - if you are looking for a city stay I’d probably stay in the CBD but if you are looking for somewhere north that is 5* it makes the perfect d...

I was upgraded to an interlude room and it was one of the best hotel experiences I have ever had! Incredible that they cut through prison walls as wide as my shoulders to connect 3 cells together! The room was cozy, well designed and just an amazing experience. I also dined down in the bar with an excellent offering/ happy hour for Thursday night. The scallop was delicious and the oysters were e...

What an amazing hotel with an incredible history. You will not find a hotel like this anywhere. The rooms are all converted B division prison cells, ours being B106 which was made up of 4 cells. Yes the rooms are right for room but you don’t come to a place like this to stay in your room all day. You might as well go to a real prison 😄 The bar downstairs serves some amazing cocktails. Their Bloo...

The bed is so comfy and I had the best sleep, it’s so dark and cosy like a little cave!!!!!
