Expert Review: The Crane

The Crane, a distinguished Michelin Key Selected property in St. Philip, Barbados, offers a unique blend of historic charm and modern luxury, consistently lauded for its breathtaking ocean views and expansive amenities. As the oldest continuously operating hotel in the Caribbean, dating back to 1887, it provides a sophisticated retreat perched dramatically above the renowned Crane Beach.

Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for The Crane is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently praising its stunning aesthetics and tranquil atmosphere. It holds a "Very Good" rating of 4.0 out of 5 based on TripAdvisor reviews and an "Excellent" 8.6 on Hotels.com. The resort is admired for its ability to balance luxury with authenticity, offering a unique experience that connects guests with the island's natural beauty.

Key Highlights

Guests consistently highlight several aspects that make The Crane special:

  • Stunning Location & Views: Perched on a cliffside, the resort boasts majestic, uninterrupted views of the Atlantic Ocean, often described as "the most beautiful on earth." Crane Beach itself, a picturesque stretch of pink-white sand, is consistently ranked among the world's finest.
  • Exceptional Pools: The resort features an impressive array of five to six swimming pools, including an historic main pool with cliff-edge views, a multi-cascading complex with waterfalls, infinity pools, and numerous private plunge pools attached to residences.
  • Elegant Design: The architecture beautifully marries its colonial past with modern upgrades, featuring high ceilings, hardwood floors, traditional Barbadian coral stone walls, and handcrafted mahogany furnishings in its older sections. The newer residences offer a more contemporary yet luxurious style.
  • Comprehensive Amenities: Spanning 40 acres, The Crane offers a "village" area with multiple restaurants, bars, a coffee shop, an ice cream parlour, a general store, boutiques, a fitness center, tennis courts, and a supervised kids' club, providing a complete resort experience.

Room Quality

The rooms at The Crane are renowned for being ultra-spacious, luxurious, and well-appointed, ranging from Junior Suites to expansive one, two, and three-bedroom residences and penthouses. Many accommodations feature private plunge pools or larger infinity pools, enhancing the sense of privacy and indulgence.

Standard room amenities often include king-size four-poster beds, climate control, coffee/tea makers, in-room safes, balconies, and separate sitting areas. Bathrooms typically feature marble finishes and may include luxurious whirlpool baths and spa showers. Many suites and residences come with fully-equipped kitchens or kitchenettes, offering guests self-catering options. While generally praised for comfort, some recent reviews note ongoing renovations that can occasionally lead to issues like dust or loud AC in incompletely refurbished rooms, or limited hot water and sparse in-room amenities in older units.

Dining Experience

The Crane boasts a diverse gastronomic selection across its five to seven on-site restaurants and bars.

  • L'Azure: Offers upscale international and Caribbean cuisine with a focus on fresh seafood, set in an elegant cliff-top location with panoramic Atlantic views, and is particularly popular for its buffet breakfast.
  • Zen: Frequently lauded as a top restaurant, it serves exceptional Japanese and Thai fusion cuisine in a tranquil setting, complete with a sushi bar and stunning ocean vistas.
  • D'Onofrio's Trattoria / Poesia No. 3 Trattoria Pizzeria: Provides a taste of Italy with tantalizing Italian dishes.
  • The Carriage House: A poolside bar and grill offering casual bites and light grilled fare.
  • The Grove Beach Bar & Grill: Located on Crane Beach, it serves tropical drinks and grilled options.
  • Breakfast: Often included, the buffet breakfast (served at L'Azure or Carriage House) is described as "superb," featuring a wide selection of cereals, fruits, pastries, and hot staples including Bajan items. The Gospel Breakfast is a notable highlight for some.

While Zen consistently receives high praise, some guests find dinner at L'Azure to be overpriced for the quality and quantity. Overall, dining can be expensive, both in the restaurants and the on-site General Store.

Service & Staff

The hospitality at The Crane is generally a strong point, with many guests commending the staff as friendly, helpful, and attentive. Numerous accounts highlight staff members going "above and beyond" to ensure a memorable stay, from efficient check-in to assisting with transport. The personalized approach, where staff often remember guests, contributes to a "home-from-home" and "family-like" atmosphere.

However, some guests have noted inconsistencies, with occasional reports of slow service, particularly at the poolside and in some restaurants. Issues with reception organization and certain aspects of housekeeping have also been mentioned.

Location & Accessibility

The Crane's location on the secluded southeast coast of Barbados offers tranquility and stunning natural beauty. Its most iconic feature is its direct access to Crane Beach, accessible via a unique glass-front elevator or 200 stone steps. While the beach is beautiful, guests should be aware that the Atlantic waves can be strong and unpredictable, making swimming challenging at times. Sargassum seaweed can also accumulate on the beach during certain seasons.

The resort is conveniently located just 10-15 minutes from Grantley Adams International Airport (BGI), with taxis readily available. However, its remote setting means that exploring attractions beyond the resort typically requires a car rental, as Bridgetown is approximately a 45-minute drive. Public transportation (buses and minivans) and car rentals are available on or near the property, with the concierge able to assist with arrangements.

Value & Pricing

Room rates at The Crane typically start from approximately $194-$249 USD per night, with prices varying significantly for larger suites and residences. Many guests perceive the resort to offer good value for the level of luxury, extensive amenities, and unique experience it provides. The resort frequently offers promotions, including significant discounts for longer stays (e.g., up to 45-50% off for 3+ or 5+ nights) and complimentary nights for bookings of seven or more. It's important to note an additional room rate levy of approximately $9.65 USD per room, per night. While the overall value is often praised, some dining options are considered expensive.

Common Complaints

Despite its many positives, some recurring criticisms include:

  • Inconsistent Service: While staff are generally friendly, guests have sometimes experienced slow service, particularly by the pools or in certain restaurants, and occasional disorganization at the front desk.
  • Beach Conditions: The presence of sargassum seaweed during certain times of the year and strong, often unswimmable waves on Crane Beach are noted issues. The beach elevator has also been reported as out of service periodically, requiring use of the stairs.
  • Room-Related Issues: A few guests have reported arriving to rooms still undergoing refurbishment, leading to issues like dust or noise. Older reviews mention limited hot water and sparse in-room amenities.
  • Remote Location Drawbacks: While appreciated for its tranquility, the secluded location means that venturing off-resort without a rental car can be restrictive and costly due to taxi fares.
  • High Dining Costs: Food and beverages, both in the resort's restaurants and the on-site general store, can be quite expensive.

Currently staying at the Crane. So far it's very good. Great apartment overlooking the ocean. Good breakfast with great view over Crane beach. Pools are fine with excellent drinks service. Evening entertainment is variable as in most places. Staff are very helpful and it's always service with a smile. We made a good choice.

This was our first time visiting Barbados and staying at the crane. We would highly recommend this resort to anyone considering coming here. The grounds are beautiful and everything is super accessible. The pools are great and there is a few to choose from along with an adult only one. The crane beach is walking distance as well. There are a few restaurants to choose from and the breakfast buffet ...

The Crane Resort was the perfect place to stay to relax and unwind. Our room was spacious and generously appointed with classic furniture. We had a king sized four poster bed, chaise lounge and sofa. The suite boasts 2 full bathrooms, a kitchen and a private pool. The pool was crystal clear and always the perfect temperature to cool off. We also had a full kitchen and washer dryer. The room was cl...

Very comfortable I had a wonderful and very relaxing stay at The Crane. The location is stunning and a bit more secluded, which we loved. The pools are fantastic, and the beach is magnificent. The rooms are spacious and luxurious well-appointed. The only minor downside is that because it's more remote, you'll rely on the resort's restaurants or need a taxi/car to explore other dining options. Ove...

This hotel has a lot of potential but our stay was just ok. Positives: AC in our room worked really well. Pools and grounds are very pretty. Weather is amazing. All of the staff were really nice and there were pleasant surprises like free coconuts they’d hand out when they were pruning their coconut trees etc. They were able to extend our stay when all flights in the region were canceled and we h...

We stayed at the Crane for a week before boarding a cruise ship. The resort is beautiful, the staff always wonderful and accommodating and the restaurants served delicious food. The resort staff arranged an airport pickup the night we arrived and our driver Oneil was at the airport waiting for us. We had such a good time with Oneil the first night, we actually used him as a tour guide for the re...
