Expert Review: seven&nine

seven&nine in Stratford, Canada, a property selected by the Michelin Key, is consistently lauded as an exceptional destination, standing out for its unique architectural design, prime location, and highly personalized guest experience.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for seven&nine is overwhelmingly positive. It holds a remarkable 4.9 out of 5 stars based on Google reviews and boasts an impressive 19.9 out of 20 for "Overall Experience" from verified Michelin Guide guests. Guests frequently describe it as a "labor of love" and a "jewel of modern architecture," highlighting its distinctiveness and meticulous attention to detail.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently praise seven&nine for its stunning modernist architecture, designed by Shim/Sutcliffe, which offers a striking contrast to Stratford's traditional 19th-century Gothic buildings. The interiors are furnished with modernist classic pieces and contemporary artworks, providing a sophisticated and artful ambiance. Another significant highlight is the property's self-sufficient nature, with each accommodation featuring a full kitchen, Nespresso machine, and high-quality amenities like Pelee Island wines and Le Labo bath products. Its excellent location, just a minute's walk from the Avon Theatre and close to downtown attractions, is also a major draw.

3. Room Quality

Seven&nine offers distinct accommodations, including the two-bedroom Tower House and spacious guest suites like the Garden Suite and Garret Studio. The Tower House retains its original furnishings selected by Jim Morris and features art from owner Robert Lemon's collection. The Garret Studio is characterized by its sloped ceilings, a marble fireplace, tall windows with antique shutters, a blend of bright mid-century furniture, and a unique custom "sweater-striped" carpet. The Garden Suite provides a private exterior entrance and porch overlooking a courtyard garden, a queen-size four-poster bed, a 3-piece porcelain tiled ensuite with a large shower, a coffee station, and a fridge. Comfort and thoughtful furnishings are frequently noted by guests.

4. Dining Experience

As a property designed for a more private, self-catered experience, seven&nine does not feature an on-site restaurant for breakfast or other meals. Instead, each unit is equipped with a full kitchen, a Nespresso machine, and provisions like Pelee Island wines, allowing guests to prepare their own meals. However, its central location places guests within easy reach of numerous local dining establishments, with recommended spots including Bijou, Pazzo Pizzeria, Madelyn's Diner, Mercer Hall, Sirkel's Cafe, and Braai House.

5. Service & Staff

While there isn't extensive public feedback specifically on staff interactions in a traditional hotel sense, the property is a passion project managed by its owner, Robert Lemon, who is also an architectural and heritage consultant. This suggests a highly personalized and dedicated approach to hospitality. Guests can contact Robert Lemon directly for bookings and inquiries, implying a direct and attentive guest experience. The meticulous detailing and ingenious design evident throughout the property reflect a deep care for the guest experience.

6. Location & Accessibility

The location of seven&nine is considered excellent, situated in the heart of downtown Stratford, a "scant minute's walk" from the renowned Avon Theatre, a key venue for the annual Shakespeare festival. Guests appreciate its proximity to restaurants, shops, and the river walking path. Nearby attractions include City Hall, Perth County Courthouse, the Avon River Park System, and The Shakespearean Garden. Stratford itself is described as a "surprisingly pleasant and livable town," making the location ideal for cultural tourists and those seeking local charm. The property is also accessible by car (90 minutes from Toronto) and train (2 hours from Toronto Union Station).

7. Value & Pricing

As Stratford's only Tablet Hotel and a Michelin Key Selected property, seven&nine offers a high-end, boutique experience. While specific pricing is not readily available in the public search results, guests typically book directly through Tablet Hotels or by contacting the host, Robert Lemon. Given its unique design, amenities, and prestigious selection, it is positioned as a premium accommodation, offering significant value for those seeking an architecturally significant and luxurious stay.

8. Common Complaints

While highly praised, seven&nine does have a few considerations for potential guests. The property has minimum stay requirements, typically a 3-night stay for weekends and a 4-night stay for midweek. Accessibility can be an issue for some, as the Tower House is spread across six levels with 45 steps and no elevator, making it unsuitable for guests with limited mobility. The Garret Studio also has 19 steps and no elevator. Additionally, parking for the Garden Suite is not available on-site, and pets are not allowed on the property.

We had an amazing long weekend getaway at seven and nine. Beautifully designed with amazing furnishings and art. Total comfort and style. Our hosts offered helpful and timely information about the house, the city and surrounding areas. Even without a theatre season there was lots to see and do, great food, beautiful walks through the neighbourhoods and around the lake. Having bicycles available ...

Booked a 4-day stay at Tower House in 2020, but had to postpone several times because of the pandemic. Despite weather not cooperating (arrived and left Stratford in a snowstorm), we had an amazing time. The 4-story house is spectacular qua design. Lots of light because of the huge windows and the skylight. Loved the different levels , the fully-equipped main floor kitchen, overlooking a small po...

We stayed at seven&nine for three nights. As an architect, I am fascinated by the Tower. It is wonderful to stay and experience the beauty and complexity of the design over an extended period of time, how the light changes, how the flow of spaces works, sitting and observing the many custom details and imaginative solutions. You come away from the experience more committed to excellence in archi...
