Expert Review: Riva Arun Bangkok
Riva Arun Bangkok, a Michelin Key Selected property, consistently garners high praise for its breathtaking views of Wat Arun, exceptional service, and prime location amidst Bangkok's historic heart. This boutique hotel, with its Chino-Colonial design, offers a unique and memorable stay along the Chao Phraya River.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
Riva Arun Bangkok enjoys an overwhelmingly positive sentiment and high ratings from guests. Review scores frequently reach 9.0 and above on various platforms, with some even citing 9.7 for staff and location. The general consensus highlights it as a fantastic hotel, with many guests expressing a strong desire to return.
2. Key Highlights
The most celebrated aspect of Riva Arun Bangkok is undoubtedly its spectacular location and the unparalleled views of Wat Arun, especially from the rooms and the rooftop restaurant. Guests also consistently laud the exceptional service and friendly staff. The hotel's design, blending modern amenities with a colonial style, along with its cleanliness and comfortable atmosphere, are also frequently mentioned as key highlights. Its proximity to major cultural sites and easy access to river transport are also significant advantages.
3. Room Quality
The hotel features 25 well-appointed rooms, thoughtfully designed with a Chino-Colonial architectural influence and modern touches. Rooms offer comfortable bedding and air conditioning. Many rooms provide stunning views of the Chao Phraya River or the old city, with some specifically boasting direct views of Wat Arun.
Room types vary, including:
- Studio (22 sqm): Cozy and comfortable, often overlooking the old town streets.
- Superior (22 sqm): Offers partial river views or overlooks a neighboring side street.
- Deluxe (25-27 sqm): Features river views, sometimes with a "mini" balcony suitable for a morning stretch or sunset photo.
- Grand Deluxe (50 sqm): A more spacious and luxurious option overlooking the Chao Phraya River.
- Grand Deluxe Jacuzzi (62 sqm): Provides full views of the Chao Phraya River and Wat Arun, considered one of the most luxurious accommodations.
- Premium Jacuzzi Suite (73 sqm): The largest and most elaborate, offering exclusivity and luxury, some with an outdoor terrace and private hot tub.
While some standard rooms might be described as compact, they are well-planned and comfortable. Bathrooms, while sometimes tight, are functional with showers and essential amenities.
4. Dining Experience
The hotel's dining experience is highly praised, especially at its iconic rooftop restaurant and bar, Above Riva. This restaurant offers incredible cuisine and magnificent panoramic views of the Chao Phraya River and Wat Arun, making it a memorable spot for meals and sunset cocktails. The "Twist of Thai Cuisine" menu at Above Riva blends local flavors with market-fresh ingredients and international influences.
Breakfast, served at Above Riva, is highly recommended, with guests raving about the delicious spread, which includes a modest buffet and an à la carte menu. There is also a tranquil café concept set along the pier for drinks and all-day dining, and a casual lobby café offering Western comfort food and Thai gourmet street food. The coffee, in particular, receives 100% positive feedback from verified guests.
5. Service & Staff
The service and staff at Riva Arun Bangkok consistently receive exceptional feedback. Guests describe the staff as warm, welcoming, genuinely kind, attentive, friendly, and incredibly helpful. Many reviews highlight their thoughtfulness and care, even towards children, making stays special. The staff's hospitality is often compared favorably to that of five-star hotels, adding significant value to the guest experience.
6. Location & Accessibility
Riva Arun Bangkok boasts a superb and highly convenient location in the heart of Bangkok's historic district, directly across the Chao Phraya River from the majestic Wat Arun. It is within easy walking distance of numerous major attractions, including the Grand Palace, Wat Pho (Temple of the Reclining Buddha), Museum Siam, and the vibrant Flower Market. The hotel's riverside position also offers excellent accessibility via boat, with the Chao Phraya Express Boat service and various piers (like Tha Tien Pier and Tha Chang Pier) just a few minutes' walk away. Public transport is also readily accessible, with the Sanamchai MRT station approximately 250 meters away and a bus station just 50 meters from the hotel. Getting to the hotel from Suvarnabhumi Airport typically takes around 40 minutes by taxi.
7. Value & Pricing
While Riva Arun Bangkok offers a luxurious experience, especially given its prime location and stunning views, it is often perceived as offering good value. The average price of a room is around $142, which is higher than Bangkok's average hotel room price of $62, but guests feel it offers exceptional value for money considering the quality and unique offerings. Many find the breakfast to be good value. Booking directly through the official website is recommended for the best prices.
8. Common Complaints
While overall complaints are minimal due to the overwhelmingly positive feedback, a few minor recurring issues have been noted:
- Limited Views in Certain Rooms: Some guests in rooms not specifically advertised as "view rooms" have found their views to be limited or obstructed by adjacent buildings, restaurants, or awnings. It's important for guests to verify the specific view offered by their chosen room type if this is a priority.
- River Noise: During the day, river boats can generate some noise, which might be noticeable for rooms directly facing the river.
- Lack of Fitness Center/Spa: The hotel does not have a dedicated fitness center or spa, though in-room spa treatments are available upon request.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. The location is walking distance to some great attractions, food, and shops. While it is a little far from the airport and getting in and out of the area can be a bit hectic due to traffic, it made up for it with the view of Wat Arun from our window. The room was the comfiest that we stayed in during our 3 weeks in Thailand. The bed was so big and cozy, the am...

I spent hours (too embarrassed to admit how many) looking for a hotel that didn’t have any of the nightmares reported like cockroaches, bed bugs, awful reviews, loud noise outside, break-in accusations by staff, mean and/or racist staff. We also were willing to pay what we might in the states, so long as it included breakfast and was in a good location. Then, hours later, I found this amazing hote...

This is the second time we stayed at Riva Arun. We love the area and the hotel is ideally placed for exploring some of the most famous sites in Kroong Thaehp (Bangkok). The staff are fabulous and go the extra mile. After booking, we had the opportunity to do an upgrade to Grand Deluxe Jacuzzi room overlooking the river and looking straight across to Wat Arun. It was fabulous and well worth the ext...

Loved staying here. Staff was amazing, from the desk people to the rooftop restaurant servers. Loved the view of the temple just across the river. If you aren’t familiar Bangkok, the river taxis are THE way to get around the city. You will not regret staying right on the river.

I love the Riva Arun for its ideal location, wonderful staff, excellent roof top restaurant, and comfortable room. My second stay and will return. Many popular sites within walking distance. Vibrant area. River ferries nearby. Very reasonable rates considering all of this.

This is an amazing location on the river. Spend the extra $$ for a room overlooking Wat Arun! Walking distance to all the main Bangkok temples. Nice rooftop restaurant (we only had breakfast) . Friendly staff! It was perfect for us first time visitors
