Expert Review: Ritz Paris

The Ritz Paris, an iconic establishment on Place Vendôme, stands as a beacon of classic French luxury, earning the prestigious Michelin Three-Key rating for an extraordinary stay. Following a significant four-year, $450 million renovation completed in 2016, the hotel has meticulously preserved its Belle Époque grandeur while subtly integrating modern comforts.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for the Ritz Paris is overwhelmingly positive, with guests often describing it as an incredible hotel offering a transportive experience into a world of history and opulence. Many consider it one of the most famous and luxurious hotels globally. While some acknowledge the exceptionally high pricing, the sentiment leans towards it being a worthwhile splurge for those seeking an unparalleled luxury experience. However, some recent feedback (2025) indicates potential inconsistencies in service that can detract from the overall luxury experience despite the beautiful property.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently laud the Ritz Paris for its:

  • Design & Ambiance: The hotel's interior is described as jaw-dropping and over-the-top, with neoclassical antiques, gilded oil paintings, ornate tapestries, and crystal chandeliers creating a palatial atmosphere. The public spaces, including the lobby and bars, are stunning.
  • Location: Situated on Place Vendôme, it offers an unbeatable location for high-end shopping and proximity to major Parisian attractions like the Louvre, Tuileries Garden, and Palais Garnier.
  • Amenities: The Ritz Club & Spa is a standout feature, boasting a gorgeous iridescent indoor pool, a well-equipped gym, steam rooms, saunas, and the world's first and only Chanel spa. The hotel also offers a renowned cooking school, Ecole Ritz Escoffier.
  • History: The deep sense of history and the feeling of being transported to a different era are frequently mentioned highlights.

3. Room Quality

The 142 rooms and suites at the Ritz Paris are consistently praised for their exquisite and spacious design, averaging 375-430 square feet for entry-level rooms, which is generous for Paris. Each room is unique, featuring classic French style with luxurious touches like velvet, silk, and brocades, aiming to feel more like a private Parisian apartment than a typical hotel room.

  • Comfort: Beds are described as extremely comfortable with quality linens.
  • Design: Rooms showcase sumptuous neoclassical decor, molded walls and ceilings, and thick carpeting. Bathrooms are often large and well-equipped with Italian marble, deep soaking tubs, dual-head showers, separate toilet rooms, and the iconic gold swan faucets. A charming detail is the use of peachy-pink towels, chosen to flatter a woman's complexion.
  • Technology & Quirks: While elegant, some older reviews noted a tiny TV built into the mirror and a lack of in-room coffee/tea facilities. However, staff can bring coffee/tea to the room upon request. Recent reviews mention quiet rooms thanks to thick carpets and heavy curtains.

4. Dining Experience

Dining at the Ritz Paris is considered an integral part of the experience, offering a range of options:

  • L'Espadon: The hotel's fine-dining restaurant, L'Espadon, holds one Michelin star and offers classic French cuisine with creative twists in a formal setting. Breakfast here is highly lauded, with one guest calling it "probably the most delicious breakfast I've ever had in Paris."
  • Bar Vendôme: A brasserie-style restaurant with an all-day menu, offering a vibrant atmosphere with live music and excellent dishes.
  • Ritz Bar: Described as intimate with an innovative cocktail list.
  • Bar Hemingway: An iconic, memorabilia-stuffed bar famous for its classic cocktails. Hotel guests can often skip the line.
  • Salon Proust: Serves a sophisticated afternoon tea with pastries by chef François Perret.

While the quality of food is generally high, some older reviews have noted the dining offerings (excluding pastries and Bar Hemingway) as underwhelming for such a renowned establishment.

5. Service & Staff

Service at the Ritz Paris is generally described as extremely polished, refined, and attentive. Staff are well-trained, professional, and often remember guest preferences. Guests have highlighted seamless check-in, efficient baggage handling, and proactive assistance with reservations and transport. Housekeeping is also noted for its thoroughness and attention to detail, including multiple room services per day.

However, some recent reviews (2025) indicate that while the "product" (materials, amenities, food) is faultless, the "human factor" or personalized service can sometimes fall short, making the experience feel less intimate or occasionally distant due to a more formal and reserved service style.

6. Location & Accessibility

The Ritz Paris boasts an exceptional location on the northwest corner of Place Vendôme in the upscale 1st arrondissement.

  • Attractions: It's within walking distance of famous landmarks such as the Tuileries Garden (four blocks south), the Louvre Museum (13-minute walk), Place de l'Opéra, Palais Garnier (nine-minute walk), and the luxury shopping street Rue de la Paix.
  • Transport: The Opera metro station (lines 3, 7, and 8) is about a seven-minute walk away, and the Concorde metro station is a five-minute walk. Charles de Gaulle Airport is typically a 35-minute drive.

7. Value & Pricing

The Ritz Paris is undeniably an "outrageously expensive" hotel.

  • Price Range: Entry-level rooms typically range from €1,100 to €1,700 per night, with signature suites costing anywhere from €5,000 to over €20,000 per night, depending on the season.
  • Value Perception: For many, the Ritz represents a "hotel porn" experience, a fantasy escape where money is no object. While some find it worth every penny for the luxurious experience, history, and amenities, others question the value for money, especially if seeking a more modern, casual, or less formal atmosphere. Extras like food and drinks on-site are also noted as being very expensive.

8. Common Complaints

While generally highly regarded, some recurring criticisms include:

  • High Costs: The exceptionally high prices for rooms, food, and drinks are a consistent point, leading some to question the overall value.
  • Lack of Personalization/Formality: Some guests have felt that service, while polished, can lack the personalized touch expected at such a high price point, possibly due to the hotel's popularity attracting many non-guests to its outlets. The atmosphere can feel formal and traditional, which might not suit all travelers.
  • Crowded Public Areas: The popularity of its bars and shops can lead to crowded public spaces, diminishing an intimate guest experience.
  • Room Quirks: Older reviews mentioned minor issues such as a small in-mirror TV and the absence of in-room coffee/tea facilities.
  • Maintenance Issues: One older review (2018) reported issues like a lack of effective blackout curtains, dust, and uncleaned terraces, along with golden swan fixtures that some found aesthetically unappealing. It's important to note these are older observations and may have been addressed since the comprehensive renovation.
  • Underwhelming Dining (Pastry exceptions): While the main restaurant and breakfast are praised, some historical feedback suggests the overall food offerings (outside of specific items like pastries or the Hemingway Bar) might not always live up to expectations compared to other top Parisian hotels.

The Ritz Paris is truly in a class of its own. From the moment we arrived to the moment we departed, the level of service was simply unparalleled — among the finest I’ve experienced anywhere in the world. Since the Ritz Bar was revamped this has become even better. The bar itself is fantastic. I’ve a preference for sitting at the bar. Bar staff are excellent and take the time to discuss the choice of drinks to suit the occasion. Small choice of tapas is fantastic. Luxury and elegance. Much easier to access now the former opening has once more been placed into commission.

We spent nine nights there, from November 1st to November 9th, celebrating my sister’s birthday, and every moment was made special thanks to the incredible staff. My friend and I were denied access to the Ritz boutique the other day, and the experience left a very sour taste. At first, the security guard visibly looked us up and down. He then tried suggesting it was too late by pointing at his watch — though it was still clearly within opening hours. When that didn’t work, he told us that cameras weren’t allowed because my friend had one on his shoulder. W...
