The hotel also offers hiking maps for local trails, including the Rota Vicentina, and can arrange surfing, SUP, kayaking, and horseback riding with local instructors.
3. Room Quality
Quinta Camarena offers a variety of stylish and comfortable rooms, each with unique designs. The property can accommodate a maximum of 23 people across different styles and sizes.
- Rustic Charm Rooms: These are the entry-level rooms, decorated with handcrafted items from local artisans and featuring top-quality Portuguese linen.
- Hillside Quarto: Newer rooms in the Hillside Quarto complex are stylishly decorated split-level rooms with outdoor terraces, often equipped with hammocks, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding greenery. The shower areas feature carefully curated ceramic tiling.
- Sobreiro Double Suite: This suite is highlighted as a special treat, boasting a spectacular clawfoot tub and a cozy reading chair.
- Other Accommodations: The hotel also offers apartments (1-bedroom and 2-bedroom options, some with garden views) and a four-bedroom villa, which includes a kitchen and a patio with a grill.
- Amenities: All rooms are quiet and filled with light, include organic and eco-friendly toiletries from Damana, and provide free WiFi. Guests will find a refillable bottle in their room to avoid single-use plastics.
4. Dining Experience
The dining experience at Quinta Camarena is a significant highlight, with a strong emphasis on fresh, local, and often plant-forward cuisine.
- Breakfast: Guests consistently rave about the "outstanding," "nutritious," and "homemade" breakfast, featuring local produce, including eggs from their own chickens, homemade jams, and breads. Options include continental, buffet, and vegetarian choices.
- Dinner: A four-course plant-forward menu is served nightly, often incorporating local and seasonal ingredients from the hotel's own garden. Head chef Rafa is known for his charismatic approach and willingness to share recipes, occasionally running cookery classes. Dishes can include delights like pumpkin potato gnocchi with almond pesto sauce, and Brazilian influences such as moqueca fish stew. Desserts, like the sweet potato brownie, are particularly popular.

7. Value & Pricing
Quinta Camarena is considered a luxury boutique hotel that offers excellent value for money given the comprehensive experience. Bed and breakfast doubles start from approximately £95 per night. While specific pricing can vary, the overall sentiment indicates that the unique offerings, personalized service, and high-quality amenities justify the cost.
8. Common Complaints
While overwhelmingly positive, some aspects to consider for potential guests include:
- The Property is a "Hike": The hotel is nestled on a scenic hillside with parts of the property spread across different levels. This means navigating slopes and steps, which might be challenging for guests with mobility issues or those seeking a completely flat terrain.
- "Slow Rhythm" of Alentejo: The hotel itself highlights that life in Alentejo moves at a slower pace, which is part of its charm but might require an adjustment for those accustomed to a faster tempo and immediate service.
- Simplicity over "Big Name Conveniences": Cercal do Alentejo is a small village, meaning big-name conveniences like Starbucks or large shopping centers are not available. The experience encourages embracing local culture rather than seeking familiar comforts.
- Cancellation Policy: The cancellation policy is strict, offering non-refundable credits for future retreats rather than refunds for cancellations more than 30 days prior to check-in (minus a processing fee).

I went to stay at the Quinta Camarena back in October 2025 (a little late to posting my review!) to do the 5-day 'Not so Serious' yoga retreat. It was truly a magical stay and undoubtedly one of the best parts of my year. Everything about the stay was thoughtfully put together and it made me feel special as a guest. We were well looked after by the owners Vera and Camron, as well as all of the ret...

They organize everything for you, which I appreciate a lot, so I can sit back and relax and just show up to the activities I feel like joining.
