1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The Michelin Guide awards a guest score of 19.6 out of 20 for overall experience, reflecting its high quality. Booking.com also shows a superb rating of 9.4 based on numerous reviews.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently highlight several standout features:

  • Rooftop Terrace: The stunning open-air rooftop lounge, known as "The Top," is a major draw, offering picturesque sunset views over the town and sea, often accompanied by lounge music and Salento wines. It's also the setting for a delightful breakfast.
  • Intimate & Boutique Feel: With only five rooms (two deluxe and three suites), the hotel provides a highly personalized and tranquil experience.
  • Historic Renovation & Design: The property is a "masterclass in old-meets-new," showcasing original 18th-century features like patterned floor tiles, stone arches, and high ceilings, seamlessly blended with sleek vintage touches and locally crafted artworks.
  • Exceptional Hosts: Owners Carolina and Aurelien are frequently lauded for their generosity, attentiveness, and helpfulness, providing excellent recommendations and making bookings for guests.

3. Room Quality

The rooms at Palais Gentile are described as chic, spacious, and comfortably appointed. All five bedrooms feature whitewashed walls, beautiful original patterned floor tiles, and lofty high ceilings. King-size beds are dressed in high-end Frette linen, ensuring comfort.

Key room features and amenities include:

  • Design: Puglian architecture with authentic arches, bespoke furniture, and art from local artisans. Limestone bathrooms are sleek with walk-in showers and Salvatore Ferragamo bath products.
  • Comfort: Air conditioning, mini-bars (stocked with Negroni ingredients in some), Illy espresso machines, and tea-making facilities.
  • Technology: Trendy Bluetooth radios are a nice touch.
  • Suites: Suites offer more space, often including a separate lounge with a sofa bed, making them suitable for families. The Matino Suite has a small balcony, while the Terrasse Suite boasts a private roof terrace.

4. Dining Experience

Breakfast at Palais Gentile is a highlight, served on the picturesque rooftop, or in-room if preferred. Guests enjoy a "brilliant spread" of locally sourced fresh fruits, delicious pastries, avocado, yogurt, cheese, and meats, accompanied by juice and excellent cappuccino.

While there isn't an in-house restaurant, dinner is available on request with a seasonal à la carte menu featuring gourmet local cuisine. Alternatively, guests can enjoy dinner and drinks at Foscolo, a renowned restaurant and cocktail bar located just across the street, which offers local and regional flavors.

5. Service & Staff

The service and staff at Palais Gentile receive "exceptional" ratings. The owners, Carolina and Aurelien, are consistently praised for their "generosity," "mindfulness," and "caring" approach, ensuring a memorable stay for guests. • Attractions: It's approximately 15-20 minutes' drive to stunning white-sand beaches along the Ionian Sea, such as Lido Pizzo and Baia Verde. Culture-rich towns like Gallipoli (25 minutes by car) and Lecce (45 minutes by car) are also easily accessible.
  • Transport: Brindisi International Airport (BDS) is about an hour's drive away, and Bari International Airport (BRI) is around two hours. Airport transfers can be arranged. While a small train station exists in Matino, public transport in Puglia is not extensive, and hiring a car is highly recommended for maximum exploring potential, with free parking available a short walk from the hotel.

7. Value & Pricing

Guests generally consider Palais Gentile to offer good value for money, with Booking.com rating it 9.0 out of 10 in this category. Prices per night for a double room can range from approximately €150 - €205 (or around $352 USD for a double room, inclusive of taxes and fees). This positions it as a luxurious yet worthwhile stay for those seeking a high-quality boutique experience in Puglia.

8. Common Complaints

While reviews are overwhelmingly positive, one isolated negative review mentioned a damp and smelly room, along with breakfast being of "poor quality for Italy." However, this appears to be an outlier, as the vast majority of guest feedback consistently praises the cleanliness, comfort, and delicious breakfast offerings. Most reviews highlight the property's meticulous renovation and high standards.
