It boasts high ratings across various platforms, often exceeding 9.0 for cleanliness, facilities, comfort, and staff performance, with staff frequently receiving a perfect 10.0 rating. Guests praise its ability to combine traditional ryokan elements with modern luxury, creating a tranquil and unforgettable retreat.
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently laud Naoshima Ryokan Roka for its impeccable service, stunning modern-Japanese design, and the unique integration of art and nature. Key highlights include the private open-air baths in every suite, the exquisite gourmet dining, and the exceptionally attentive and kind staff. The ryokan's warm and residential feel, combined with its curated collection of contemporary artworks, adds significantly to its appeal.
3. Room Quality
The ryokan features 11 beautifully designed, all-suite rooms, each offering a sense of tranquility and elegance. The interiors are modern-Japanese in style, characterized by natural materials such as wood, stone, and soil from the Seto Inland Sea area, complemented by tatami flooring, shoji screens, and minimalist furnishings. A standout feature in every suite is the private open-air bath with floor-to-ceiling windows, providing serene views of the surrounding natural landscape. Rooms also include modern amenities such as air conditioning, refrigerators, work desks, and free Wi-Fi. Suites range from the 56-square-meter Deluxe Suite to the spacious 106-square-meter Roka Suite, which can accommodate up to five people and features a private onsen bath and terrace. Guests often describe the rooms as clean, comfortable, spacious, and tastefully designed.
4. Dining Experience
Dining at Naoshima Ryokan Roka is considered a focal point and a superb culinary experience. The in-house restaurant, EN, is led by expert chefs who prepare dishes using fresh fish from the Seto Inland Sea and vegetables from the surrounding islands, emphasizing traditional Japanese cuisine. Dinner is typically a multi-course sushi kaiseki menu, often described as "superb," "extraordinarily good," and deserving of a Michelin star. Breakfast offers a mix of Japanese and Western options. There's also a cafe area, Moya, serving local herbal liqueurs and bar snacks. While generally highly praised, a few guests have noted that while the presentation of the kaiseki meal is delightful, some dishes might occasionally fail to impress in taste, though sashimi and wagyu beef are consistently highlighted as amazing.
5. Service & Staff
The service and staff at Naoshima Ryokan Roka consistently receive exceptional feedback, often earning perfect scores. Guests frequently describe the staff as "wonderful," "incredible," "kind," "attentive," and "helpful," noting their willingness to cater to every whim with a smile. Specific examples of excellent service include complimentary shuttle services to and from Miyanoura Port and assistance with exploring the island, including providing e-bikes. Guests report feeling pampered and well taken care of, highlighting the personalized attention and warm hospitality.
6. Location & Accessibility
Naoshima Ryokan Roka is nestled in a tranquil, wooded, residential area on Naoshima Island, offering a peaceful ambiance away from the hustle and bustle. Despite its secluded feel, it is conveniently located just a short walk (about 5-10 minutes) from key art attractions such as the Ando Museum, Lee Ufan Museum, Valley Gallery, and Benesse House Museum. The ryokan provides a free shuttle service to and from Miyanoura Port, making arrival and departure seamless. Travelers can reach Naoshima via ferry from Uno Port (accessible from Okayama Airport by bus and train) or Takamatsu Port (accessible from Takamatsu Airport by bus). The ryokan also offers complimentary bicycles for guests to explore the island at their own pace.
7. Value & Pricing
Naoshima Ryokan Roka is considered a luxury property, and its pricing reflects this, with average room prices around $846, higher than the city's average. However, guests overwhelmingly consider the experience to be worth every penny, citing the unparalleled hospitality, exquisite design, and comprehensive amenities as providing excellent value for money. It's seen as an indulgence for those seeking a high-quality ryokan experience on the art island.
8. Common Complaints
While generally highly praised, a few minor criticisms have been noted by some guests. Some feedback mentions potential issues with room layout, such as the bed being placed near the entrance or the arrangement of the bathroom steps. There have also been isolated comments about hearing neighbors through walls or humming air conditioning units. In terms of dining, while the overall experience is excellent, a very small number of reviews mention that some dishes in the kaiseki meal might not always meet the very high expectations set by the ryokan's reputation and other offerings, or that wine/sake pairings could be improved. One guest mentioned wanting better heating in a suite. However, these appear to be isolated incidents rather than recurring widespread issues, and are often overshadowed by the overwhelming positive feedback.

Wonderful service and attention to detail from dietary restrictions to transportation. The hotel was very communicative via email prior to check-in and helped us arrange taxi service back on the mainland to our next destination. The Japanese style hotel was fantastic. The staff was all friendly. The rooms where laid out and beautifully decorated, the bath overlooking the garden was so peaceful. I found myself sitting out there for an hour listen to music and feeling completely relaxed. The hotel also had rental bikes to go explore the various art museums and outdoor exhibits throughout the island.
