Expert Review: Monte Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort

Monte Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort: A Comprehensive Review of Monaco's Chic Oasis

The Monte Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort, a Michelin Key Selected property, offers a vibrant and luxurious experience on Monaco's eastern tip. Guests generally praise its extensive amenities, unique lagoon, and overall modern resort ambiance, often noting it provides a five-star feel despite its official four-star rating.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for Monte Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing it as "excellent," "amazing," and "stunning". It's celebrated as a chic and lively destination, offering a more contemporary alternative to some of Monaco's more traditional hotels. While some reviews suggest it’s not a "top-notch luxury hotel" in the same vein as the Hotel de Paris, it is highly recommended for those seeking a vibrant Monte-Carlo getaway. The hotel holds an excellent average rating of 8.7 out of 10 based on numerous reviews, with high scores for location, cleanliness, comfort, and staff.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently rave about the resort's exceptional facilities and lush setting. The main attraction is its unique sand-bottom lagoon, a stunning feature offering magnificent sea views and a relaxing atmosphere with deckchairs and palm trees. The property boasts a vast indoor-outdoor heated swimming pool with a jacuzzi, and direct sea access with a protection net for swimming. The four hectares of verdant gardens, designed by Jean Mus, featuring waterfalls and solariums, are also a significant draw. Other highlights include a serene spa (Clarins & myBlend SPA), a luxe casino, and a wide range of activities such as water sports and yoga classes. Guests staying at Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer (SBM) properties also benefit from the My Monte-Carlo membership, providing access to exclusive amenities like complimentary shuttle service and priority access to restaurants and clubs.

3. Room Quality

The 332 guestrooms and suites are described as contemporary, designer, and very spacious. Many rooms feature large bay windows opening onto balconies, offering superb views of the Mediterranean Sea or the French Riviera's mountain backdrop. Rooms are decorated in warm Mediterranean colors with white oak furnishings and sandstone floors, providing a comfortable and luxurious feel. Amenities often include a kettle, coffee maker, safe, iron, bathrobes, and slippers. Housekeeping is generally praised for maintaining cleanliness and replenishing towels twice daily. Some reviews specifically mention the comfort of the beds and the quietness of the rooms. While most rooms are well-regarded, some guests recommend requesting a recently renovated room, as a few older rooms and their decor might need updating.

4. Dining Experience

The Monte Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort offers a diverse gastronomic experience across its four restaurants. The flagship, Blue Bay Marcel Ravin, holds two Michelin stars and is renowned for its bold repertoire fusing Caribbean and Mediterranean flavors, often utilizing vegetables from the hotel's own organic garden. It's recommended for special dinners and champagne brunches. L'Orange Verte provides a more casual bistro atmosphere, serving tasty cuisine in a tropical orangery setting that extends to a courtyard patio. During the summer, Las Brisas offers lunch on a sea-facing terrace next to the pool. The Blue Gin bar is also a popular spot for evening drinks with stunning sea views.

Breakfast, served at L'Orange Verte, is extensive and generous, featuring a wide selection of sweet and savory items including pastries, fresh fruit, cereals, yogurts, omelets, smoked salmon, and cheeses. However, a common complaint highlights that during busy periods, there can be too many guests and insufficient staff to manage demand, leading to waits for tables and difficulty ordering hot dishes like eggs.

5. Service & Staff

The service and staff at Monte Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort generally receive high praise for being very accommodating, friendly, helpful, and delivering excellent service. Guests have noted the staff's dedication and warm, informal approach. The concierge team is also available to assist with recommendations and personalization.

6. Location & Accessibility

The resort is situated on Monaco's eastern tip, on a man-made peninsula next to the Larvotto nature reserve, providing beautiful views of the Mediterranean Sea and easy access to Larvotto Beach. While it's slightly further from the immediate city center, the hotel offers a complimentary shuttle service into town. Public bus stops are also nearby, with direct bus services to Monaco center taking approximately 9-16 minutes. The Monaco-Monte-Carlo railway station is about 3 km away (approximately a 10-minute car ride), and Nice Côte d'Azur Airport is roughly 33 km away, a 35-minute drive. Key attractions like the Monte Carlo Casino, Grimaldi Forum, and Japanese Garden are within walking distance or a short drive.

7. Value & Pricing

The Monte Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort is considered to offer good value for money within the four-star segment in Monte Carlo. Room rates can vary significantly, with average prices around $517 per night, but can be found from $301 during the low season (February) and rise considerably in the high season (June). The inclusive amenities, such as the spacious rooms, large lagoon, direct sea access, and benefits from the SBM Monte-Carlo Pass, contribute to its perceived value.

8. Common Complaints

The most frequently mentioned criticism pertains to the breakfast experience. Guests often report that the breakfast restaurant can become overcrowded, leading to long waits for tables and a shortage of staff to efficiently serve guests or take orders for cooked items. This can detract from an otherwise positive dining experience.

A severe, though seemingly isolated, complaint detailed a bedbug infestation in a room, where the staff initially denied the issue despite proof, leading to a distressing experience and eventual partial refund. While this appears to be a singular account in the available reviews, it highlights a significant issue for the affected guests. Additionally, while the overall design is contemporary, some older room decorations or areas of the hotel have been mentioned as potentially needing renovation.

The hotel itself is beautiful, and the lagoon area is truly incredible — a stunning setting that really stands out. However, the dining experience was quite different. We waited 1 hour and 25 minutes for a simple butter pasta dish, which arrived without salt or grated cheese, along with an average club sandwich and cold fries. This part was disappointing compared to the overall standard of the pr...

Stayed here for 2 nights. Rooms are tired and need a refresh. The “king size” beds are two twins pushed together with a substantial groove down the center. The pillows are flat as pancakes. The AC did not cool the room down at all. They only use a comforter on the bed, no top sheet so sleeping was unbearably hot and uncomfortable. Very stingy on the towels and soap. Would not stay here again. Staf...

I was luckily to stay here for a work event for 3 nights. The hotel is beautiful and spotlessly clean. The rooms are spacious with a huge bath and separate shower. Loved the balcony with a sofa which I did not get to enjoy enough!

Good hotel stay was perfect. But for some strange reason they have a policy to not renew the water bottles in the room for the entire stay. So once you drink the bottle on the first day. Thats it no more water bottle. In this day and age where hydration is so important this shouldn’t be charged. Spirits I understand but water??! Therefore 1 star for being greedy

Beautiful hotel in Monte Carlo. The restaurants are truly excellent – every meal was a highlight. Service is correct and efficient, not over the top but everything well managed. The pool and the greenery around the property are absolutely stunning. Rooms are clean, modern and comfortable, but a bit too minimalistic for Monte Carlo – they lack some local charm. Also, our double bed had two mattres...

Great family hotel in a fantastic location in Monaco. The outdoor areas are beautiful and very spacious given the location. Staff generally friendly. The rooms are a little dated and showing their age but not to the degree it’s a problem. Some silly prices by the pool but to be expected.
