Madulkelle Tea & Eco Lodge, a Michelin Key Selected property in Kandy, Sri Lanka, consistently garners high praise for its breathtaking location, exceptional service, and unique eco-friendly luxury experience amidst lush tea plantations.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
Madulkelle Tea & Eco Lodge is widely regarded as an "exceptional" or "superb" destination, with many guests describing it as a "little piece of heaven" and a "calm, luxurious escape." The sentiment is overwhelmingly positive, highlighting a tranquil retreat that offers a unique connection with nature and a true 5-star experience.
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently rave about several aspects of the lodge:
- Location & Views: The most frequently lauded feature is the incredible, stunning, and panoramic views of the surrounding tea plantations and the Knuckles Mountain Range.
- Service & Staff: The hospitality is a standout, with staff described as friendly, helpful, attentive, and consistently delivering exceptional service.
- Design & Ambiance: The safari-style tented accommodations, coupled with the well-maintained property and peaceful atmosphere, offer a unique and unforgettable experience.
- Amenities: Guests appreciate the outdoor infinity pool, spa treatments, on-site restaurant and bar, and the range of activities offered, including tea factory tours, trekking, and cooking classes. The lodge also utilizes an organic garden for its culinary offerings.
3. Room Quality
The accommodations, particularly the tents, are described as "truly unique and unforgettable" and "nothing short of amazing." They feature comfortable beds, spacious and well-maintained bathrooms (though some note they can be dark), and appealing decor. Each tent typically includes a terrace or balcony, a seating area, and private bathrooms with hot/cold water. Room amenities often encompass premium bedding, separate sitting areas, safes, sound-insulated walls, bathrobes, complimentary toiletries, a writing desk, heater, extra blankets, telephone, and hairdryer. The highlight for many is waking up to breathtaking sunrise views directly from their tent's terrace. While wired internet access is available, some guests note the absence of TVs, Wi-Fi, and air-conditioning in the tents, which aligns with its eco-lodge concept.
4. Dining Experience
The dining experience generally receives positive feedback, with the food described as delicious and high quality. The daily buffet breakfast, available for a fee, is particularly praised, with guests calling it "one of the most incredible breakfasts ever" and highlighting the delicious bread and pastries. The on-site restaurant serves a diverse menu of both local and international cuisines, often incorporating fresh organic vegetables and herbs from the lodge's own garden. Cooking classes with the head chef, focusing on traditional Sri Lankan dishes, are also a popular activity. However, some reviews mention that the food, particularly non-local dishes, can be "disappointing and too westernized" or "not outstanding" compared to other Sri Lankan culinary experiences. An English-style bar is also available for guests to enjoy drinks.
5. Service & Staff
The service and staff at Madulkelle Tea & Eco Lodge are consistently rated as excellent. Guests frequently use terms like "friendly," "helpful," "professional," "attentive," and "super kind" to describe the team. Staff performance typically receives very high scores (e.g., 9.3 to 9.7 out of 10). They are known for going above and beyond to ensure a memorable stay and are adept at organizing various activities and excursions, including tea plantation tours, trekking, and day trips.
6. Location & Accessibility
The lodge is situated approximately 30 km northeast of Kandy city center, nestled high in the Knuckles Mountain Range at 1,000 meters above sea level, surrounded by serene and picturesque tea plantations. It offers a peaceful retreat away from the city bustle, with nearby attractions including Hatale Waterfalls (a 15-minute walk) and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Knuckles Mountain Range (a 40-minute drive).
The primary challenge related to the location is accessibility. The drive to the lodge involves a one-lane, winding mountain road that is often in poor condition, making the journey from Kandy take about 1.5 to 2 hours. Many guests recommend arranging a driver directly through the hotel due to the challenging road conditions. An airport shuttle service is available from Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), which is about a 4-hour drive, for a fee of USD 95 per vehicle.
7. Value & Pricing
Despite being priced higher than the average hotel in Kandy (around $317 per room compared to Kandy's average of $119), Madulkelle Tea & Eco Lodge is largely considered to offer "exceptional value for money" and "affordable luxury." Guests feel that the unique experience, stunning location, comprehensive amenities, and high level of service justify the cost. Value for money ratings are generally good (around 8.5 out of 10).
8. Common Complaints
While overwhelmingly positive, some recurring criticisms include:
- Difficult Access Road: The most frequent complaint is the poor condition of the narrow, winding mountain road leading to the lodge, which can make the journey uncomfortable and lengthy.
- Food Inconsistency: Some guests found the non-local food offerings to be somewhat disappointing or "too westernized," suggesting a stronger focus on local cuisine would be preferred.
- Dark Bathrooms: A minor point, but some reviews mentioned the bathrooms could be quite dark.
- Lack of In-Room Entertainment/Connectivity in Tents: For some, the absence of TVs, consistent in-room Wi-Fi (though wired internet is available), and air-conditioning in the tented accommodations is a drawback, despite being part of the eco-lodge charm.
- Leeches: Guests are sometimes warned about leeches in the natural surroundings.
- Charge for Filtered Water: One guest noted dissatisfaction with being charged for filtered water.

Very good hotel, but excessively priced. Pros: The scenery is absolutely exceptional despite the typically uncertain weather in these misty mountains. The hotel main areas are very pleasant (beautiful pool area with croquet, nice restaurant with the spectacular view, a much appreciated fireplace in the evenings as it gets pretty cold even in February. The staff and reception was kind and professi...

The views and activities (pool, guided hikes, spa) make it worth at least 3 stars However, the food could've been a lot better My biggest issue = there was no first-aid kit, so when I sliced my foot on a rock there was no bandage big enough to cover it. That led it to get infected, which put a damper on my vacation. Any resort charging this much should have basic first aid, and it was disappoint...

This is absolutely not a 5* hotel - we came here last year and it was incredibly disappointing. For a french restaurant inside the hotel the food is awful and incredibly overpriced. We were here for New year where they put on a buffet and most food was inedible, if you are foodies this is not the place for you. There is a long windy cliff edge road to get up to the hotel too so make sure you have ...

I adore this hotel. The scenery is breathtaking, staff are friendly, the hotel itself is beautiful and the rooms are charming. I would come back without hesitation.
