Expert Review: Los Cauquenes Resort & Spa

Los Cauquenes Resort & Spa in Ushuaia, Argentina, a Michelin Key Selected property, is highly regarded as a luxurious retreat at the "End of the World," offering an exceptional experience defined by its breathtaking natural surroundings and outstanding service.

Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for Los Cauquenes Resort & Spa is overwhelmingly positive, with guests consistently rating it as excellent. It holds a guest score of 17.6 out of 20 on the Michelin Guide's 20-point scale. Many consider it a superb 5-star hotel, praising its tranquil atmosphere, stunning views, and high level of hospitality.

Key Highlights

Guests particularly love the resort's stunning panoramic views of the Beagle Channel and the snow-capped Andes Mountains, which can be enjoyed from most areas of the hotel, including many rooms and the unique indoor/outdoor pool. The spa facilities, featuring a heated indoor/outdoor pool, indoor and outdoor jacuzzis, and a sauna, are a significant draw, offering a serene space for relaxation. The attentive and friendly staff, along with direct access to a private beach, also stand out as key highlights. The heated pods are a favorite unique amenity among guests.

Room Quality

Rooms at Los Cauquenes are described as spacious, comfortable, and thoughtfully designed for relaxation and convenience. They come equipped with amenities such as wardrobes, safes, robes, slippers, comfortable seating, and desks with multiple charging ports, including U.S. outlets. Blackout blinds are also provided, which are essential given the early sunrise in the region. Bathrooms are functional and well-equipped, offering a shower, toilet, bidet, and a spacious vanity sink, along with complimentary toiletries. While many rooms boast spectacular views of the Beagle Channel or the mountains, some standard rooms may be smaller and not offer water views.

Dining Experience

The on-site Reinamora Restaurant offers regional cuisine with an international flair, providing breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner with ocean views. The breakfast buffet receives high praise for its excellence, variety, and inclusion of local products. However, some guests have noted inconsistencies with dinner service and food quality, citing issues like dirty plates, greasy bread, and steak not cooked to order, along with occasional slow service. The hotel also features a wine bar with a simpler menu.

Service & Staff

The service and staff at Los Cauquenes are consistently lauded as exceptional. Guests frequently highlight the staff's friendliness, accommodating nature, and eagerness to assist. Many staff members are proficient in English, which is highly appreciated by international travelers. The hotel's proactive communication before arrival, thoughtful touches like preparing breakfast boxes for early departures, and remembering guests' names contribute to an outstanding hospitality experience.

Location & Accessibility

Los Cauquenes Resort & Spa boasts a prime location directly on the shores of the Beagle Channel, west of Ushuaia, providing a serene and private atmosphere away from the city's hustle. It is approximately 7 km (a 15-minute drive) from Ushuaia city center and 4 km (a 10-minute drive) from Malvinas Argentinas Airport (USH). The resort offers complimentary shuttle services to and from both the airport and the city center multiple times daily, making it convenient for guests to explore the area.

Value & Pricing

As a 5-star luxury resort and a Michelin Key Selected property, Los Cauquenes Resort & Spa is recognized as a high-end destination. While it is "definitely not cheap," many guests feel it offers excellent value for the money, given the exceptional experience, stunning views, and extensive amenities, especially the spa. Prices for a one-night stay typically start from around $367.98, though these can vary. It is considered a worthwhile "plush base camp" for those embarking on Tierra del Fuego adventures.

Common Complaints

Despite the overwhelmingly positive feedback, some minor recurring issues have been mentioned by guests. These include the observation that some standard rooms may lack water views and offer limited space for luggage. A few guests have noted the absence of a controllable thermostat in their rooms and an issue with the movable shower door not fully containing water within the bathtub. Inconsistent dinner quality and slow food service at the Reinamora Restaurant have also been cited. Additionally, some rooms may have limited English-speaking channels on the television, and guests suggested having more in-room information, perhaps via a QR code.

We stayed in the senior suite for 4 nights and our experience was lovely. When we arrived at our room, there was a plate of macaroons and a note from the manager. That was a really nice touch. The room was clean and spacious. We had our private deck with incredible views. Sitting out there or opening the windows to listen to the waves crashing was the peaceful sound we were needing. Their breakf...

Beautiful resort, beautiful location. Really attentive staff. Many ways to relax and enjoy the views of the channel and mountains out of every room and public area. There is nothing I would change - it is perfect. Yes, it is either a free shuttle or a $5 uber ride to town, but as it is just outside of town it’s beautiful. And the town isn’t too interesting for tourists.

“Although the hotel markets itself as a 5-star property, I was quite surprised to see drinks being heated in a microwave. This practice falls well below the standards of a luxury hotel. At this level, a high-quality coffee machine with a proper milk frother is not an extra — it’s an expectation. I truly hope the management considers upgrading this basic service to align with the experience they pr...

We stayed in a room with view of beagle chanel. I woke up and saw the most spectacular sunrise(on land)in my life. I love this hotel. It is quiet, exclusive. The service is top notch. I am looking forward to return to Ushuaia and stay there again soon. Loved every minute of my stay!
