Expert Review: Lapa Rios
Lapa Rios, a distinguished Michelin Key One-Key property in Puerto Jimenez, Costa Rica, is consistently lauded as a truly exceptional and immersive eco-lodge experience, often described by guests as "magical" and "outstanding". It stands out for its deep commitment to conservation and its seamless integration with the surrounding pristine rainforest.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The overall sentiment for Lapa Rios is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently rating it highly (e.g., an overall experience score of 8.4/10). Travelers consistently praise the lodge for its unique ability to combine luxury with an authentic, wild nature experience. It's seen as a place that not only meets expectations but "quietly, elegantly redefine(s) them."
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently highlight the unparalleled intimacy with nature as a primary draw. The lodge is set within a 1,000-acre private rainforest reserve, acting as a crucial wildlife corridor to Corcovado National Park. This means abundant wildlife, including scarlet macaws, toucans, sloths, monkeys, and colorful frogs, are frequently spotted directly on the property, often from bungalow balconies or the restaurant terrace. The eco-conscious philosophy, local employment policies, and guided tours led by knowledgeable and passionate naturalists are also major selling points. The stunning views of the rainforest canopy and the Golfo Dulce are frequently mentioned as a highlight.
3. Room Quality
Lapa Rios features 17 open-sided, thatched-roof bungalows and villas, designed to blend with their natural environment. Rooms are described as spacious, stylish, and comfortable, decorated with bamboo furniture and warm wood flooring. Standard amenities include king or queen-sized beds with mosquito netting, indoor bathrooms with dual showers, organic toiletries, and solar-heated water. Private wrap-around terraces or balconies with comfortable lounge seating and outdoor rain showers are a common and beloved feature, allowing guests to fully experience the rainforest ambiance. Floor-to-ceiling screens facilitate ocean breezes, and eco-fans provide cooling, as most rooms intentionally do not have air conditioning (except for the Matapalo Suites, which are designed for accessibility and have eco-efficient AC). The newer Premier and Lapa Villas offer updated hardwood floors, elegant furnishings, and some even include private plunge pools, enhancing the luxury aspect.
4. Dining Experience
The dining experience at Lapa Rios, primarily at the Brisa Azul Restaurant (now Guapira Restaurant), is highly praised for its commitment to fresh, locally sourced, organic, and sustainable ingredients. The menus, revamped by a new head chef and pastry chef in 2020, offer a variety of local Costa Rican favorites and international dishes, with options for plant-based, vegetarian, and gluten-free diets. Full-board rates typically include three multi-course meals daily (breakfast, lunch, and dinner). Guests enjoy special culinary events like "dock-to-dish" featuring fresh seafood. Breakfast often includes a fruit plate and a main course, while lunch and dinner consist of an appetizer, main course, and dessert. Snacks such as banana bread and coffee for early risers, and chips and dips throughout the day, are also provided. While the food quality is generally excellent, some feedback notes that the restaurant's atmosphere, at times, lacks music or a strong vibe, despite candlelight in the evenings.
5. Service & Staff
The service and staff at Lapa Rios receive consistently glowing reviews. Guests describe the team as exceptional, attentive, professional, and genuinely warm. The staff, entirely Costa Rican, are commended for their friendly, yet not overbearing, hospitality. Naturalist guides are particularly highlighted for their extensive knowledge and passion for the environment, making guided hikes and wildlife spotting incredibly engaging and informative. The lodge's operating philosophy emphasizes responsible tourism that benefits local communities and provides economic opportunities, with staff receiving training and guidance.
6. Location & Accessibility
Lapa Rios boasts a spectacular, off-the-beaten-path location at the southern tip of Costa Rica's Osa Peninsula, within its own 1,000-acre private rainforest reserve. It's proximate to Corcovado National Park, known for its incredible biodiversity. The primary way to reach Lapa Rios is by flying from San Jose to Puerto Jimenez (a 50-minute flight), followed by a complimentary 40-45 minute road transfer to the lodge. Private driving services are also available.
While the remote location offers unparalleled immersion in nature, guests should be aware that the property is spread along three high forest ridges and features many steps and elevated walkways. This can present a challenge for individuals with walking difficulties, though on-request shuttle service is provided for some areas, particularly for the Premier and Lapa Villas located further down. A complimentary shuttle service is also available to the nearby Playa Pan Dulce beach (a 5-minute ride).
7. Value & Pricing
Lapa Rios is considered a luxury eco-lodge, and its pricing reflects the exclusive, immersive experience and its commitment to sustainability. Rates can vary significantly, ranging from approximately $594 in the low season (October) to an average of $2,778 for a weekend night in the high season (January). A typical price per night can be around $1,168.70. While it is a significant "splurge," many guests feel the value is justified by the unique accommodations, included meals (full-board packages), complimentary activities (up to two per night), and the profound connection to nature and conservation efforts. A mandatory conservation support fee of $25 per person also contributes to local conservation and community initiatives.
8. Common Complaints
Despite overwhelmingly positive feedback, a few recurring issues or criticisms have been noted:
- Lack of Air Conditioning: Most bungalows do not have AC, relying on open-air design, ocean breezes, and eco-fans. While intentional for the eco-lodge experience, this can be a "deal killer" for some, particularly during warm nights.
- Accessibility Challenges: The extensive steps and elevated walkways across the hilly property can be physically demanding for guests with mobility issues.
- Pool Area Limitations: Some guests have found the swimming pool to be small, with insufficient seating, and occasionally not well-maintained.
- Limited Beach Experience: While a shuttle takes guests to Playa Pan Dulce, the "beach club" experience there can be basic, with limited loungers and no staff presence.
- Design Details: A few reviews mention that some interior design elements or finishes in the rooms might appear "average" or "disappointing" for the price point, with some plastic elements noted.
- Restaurant Ambiance: The main restaurant, despite serving good food, sometimes lacks a vibrant atmosphere or background music.
- Wildlife Proximity: While a major highlight for most, the presence of various jungle creatures (including larger spiders or snakes) in close proximity to the villas, though rarely inside, might unnerve some visitors.

We had a gorgeous room overlooking the ocean; however, although we were super careful to not leave any doors or windows open, the beds would be filled with bugs every night. The first night we switched room but then quickly realized that this was a nightly thing. The location is very pretty but absolutely remote. There is nothing around you but the hotel. If you don’t get all inclusive, note that ...
