La Toubana Hotel & Spa, a Michelin Key Selected property nestled in Sainte-Anne, French West Indies, consistently receives high praise as a luxurious and serene escape, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Caribbean Sea. It stands out as a top upscale option in Guadeloupe, lauded for its intimate atmosphere and exceptional service.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
The general consensus for La Toubana Hotel & Spa is overwhelmingly positive, with guests frequently describing it as "paradise" and "idyllic." It holds a "wonderful" rating of 9.1 based on 242 reviews, with high scores for location (9.5) and cleanliness (9.5). The hotel is considered a 5-star establishment, offering an exclusive setting that blends comfort, elegance, and Creole authenticity.
2. Key Highlights
Guests consistently rave about several key aspects of La Toubana. The stunning ocean views from various points, including the infinity pool, restaurant, and private bungalows, are frequently mentioned as a major draw. The hotel's private, sheltered beach cove with its own pier and sun loungers is another cherished feature, providing a tranquil and exclusive seaside experience. The attentive and helpful staff, along with the exquisite food, also receive consistent commendation. Its beautiful design, with every detail thoughtfully executed, and a lovely range of facilities contribute to the overall appeal.
3. Room Quality
La Toubana offers 44 units, consisting of bungalows, suites, and villas, all designed to ensure a sense of seclusion and privacy. Each air-conditioned suite and bungalow features bright, Caribbean-style décor and includes a terrace, a sitting area with a flat-screen TV, and a kitchenette. While bedrooms are described as "smallish," the spacious patios, often with terrific ocean views, are a significant highlight. Rooms are carefully screened for privacy with wooden barriers, utilizing the mountainous slope to enhance guest seclusion. Accommodations typically come with a king bed and an Italian shower, with some even offering freestanding bathtubs or private plunge pools.
4. Dining Experience
The hotel boasts a refined gastronomic experience with two restaurants and a bar.
- Le Grand Bleu: Located by the infinity pool, this restaurant serves upscale Creole cuisine with international influences, featuring local products and fresh, locally caught lobsters, all set against an exceptional panoramic ocean view. It's praised for its refined and tasty cuisine.
- Toubana La Plage (On the Beach): This beachfront restaurant offers lighter, fresh, and sunny dishes, allowing guests to dine with their feet in the sand in a chic and relaxed atmosphere.
- Bar de la Mer: This bar serves refreshing cocktails and gourmet tapas overlooking the Caribbean Sea, perfect for admiring the sunset.
Daily breakfast is a highlight for many, with an "impeccable" or "nice" American breakfast available. However, some guests have noted that the food, apart from highlights like fish tacos at the beach, can sometimes be under-seasoned.
5. Service & Staff
The service and staff at La Toubana consistently receive high marks, with a rating of 9.2 for staff. Guests frequently describe the staff as "genuinely attentive," "very helpful," "impeccable," and "willing to help with any requests." While many staff members primarily speak French, English-speaking personnel are usually available to assist. Special touches and care for guests, including families with children, have been noted.
6. Location & Accessibility
La Toubana Hotel & Spa is situated in a peaceful setting just over half a mile (approximately 1 km) outside the charming fishing village of Sainte-Anne, overlooking Saint-Anne Bay. This cliffside location offers stunning elevated views and immediate access to the sea. It's also an ideal starting point for exploring Guadeloupe, with most popular tourist sights within a 30-minute drive. Pointe-à-Pitre's Pole Caraibes Airport (PTP) is about 12 miles (20 km) away, a drive that typically takes 20-22 minutes, though it can be longer during peak season due to narrow, congested roads. While the hotel is close to Sainte-Anne, the road to town can be steep, making walking less convenient.
7. Value & Pricing
With a "value for money" rating of 8.1, La Toubana is considered a top upscale and luxury option, reflected in its pricing. Stays can start from approximately $384 (around €324) per night, with various offers available throughout the year. Daily buffet breakfast is available for a fee of EUR 45 for adults and EUR 30 for children. The hotel offers an array of amenities and services, including a full-service spa, fitness center, outdoor pool, and private beach access, contributing to its perceived value.
8. Common Complaints
While overwhelmingly positive, some recurring issues or criticisms have been noted by guests:
- Odor and Insects in Bungalows: A "not pleasant" smell in some bungalows is a recurring complaint, along with the occasional presence of bugs and creatures, which guests acknowledge can be normal in a jungle-like setting.
- Traffic and Road Conditions: The drive from Pointe-à-Pitre can be significantly longer than the estimated 30 minutes due to narrow and often congested roads, especially during peak season.
- Spa/Fitness Center Concerns: Noise from a meeting room above the spa has been reported to echo, and some fitness center equipment shows signs of age and rust.
- Small Pool Deck and Beach Access: The deck area around the infinity pool is described as deceptively small, and getting to the beach can involve a somewhat steep and tiring walk. The private beach, though lovely, is also noted as being small.
- Food Seasoning: As mentioned, some guests found the food, aside from a few standout dishes, to be occasionally under-seasoned.

An individual entered the room and stole several of our personal belongings. According to the information shared with us, the individual was seen by a hotel employee fleeing with our belongings. The incident was immediately reported to ...

We stopped for lunch and can't wait to return to spend more time here. Particularly on the breakwater at the wee beach. So glamorous! The food was full-on French perfection, the dining room overlooking the infinity pool. Have the tuna!

Eating at Le Grand Bleu restaurant was one of my worst experiences. The fish was dry, like cardboard with a slight curry flavor 🤢 The waitresses were polite but had terrible customer service skills. The worst part was having to pay a lot of money for this!🤢

The stay exceeded our expectations. Everything was excellent and the place is magnificent. Beautiful beach with very comfortable sunbeds. Very friendly and helpful staff. Always with a smile! We booked a bungalow with a small pool and seaview. The food is creative and very well tasting. It was fabulous and we would be happy to come back!
