Expert Review: La Baronnie

La Baronnie, Ile de Re: A Haven of Historic Charm and Exemplary Service

La Baronnie, a Michelin Key Selected property on Île de Ré, consistently garners high praise for its blend of historic elegance, serene atmosphere, and exceptional hospitality. Housed in an 18th-century mansion built on the ruins of a 13th-century castle, the 4-star hotel offers a luxurious and peaceful retreat in the heart of Saint-Martin-de-Ré.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for La Baronnie is overwhelmingly positive. Guests frequently describe their stays as "fantastic" and "lovely," often finding it hard to pinpoint any faults. The hotel is celebrated for its quiet, comfortable ambiance and the wonderfully friendly and helpful nature of its staff. Many visitors consider it a charming and peaceful destination, aiming to be a "home away from home" for its guests.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently laud the hotel's key attributes:

  • Service & Staff: Praised as excellent, attentive, and welcoming.
  • Location: Its prime spot, just 100 meters from Saint-Martin-de-Ré port, is a major draw.
  • Design & Ambiance: The beautiful historic property, with its period woodwork, grand staircases, velvet sofas, and cobblestoned courtyards, is frequently admired. The charming, well-kept gardens, perfumed with lavender and jasmine, offer a peaceful sanctuary.
  • Amenities: The heated outdoor swimming pool (available May through October), Cinq Mondes spa, and cozy Bar 1721 are highly appreciated facilities, offering relaxation and enjoyment. Private, secure parking is also available.

3. Room Quality

La Baronnie offers 23 uniquely decorated rooms and suites, each sharing an elegant aesthetic with wood-beamed ceilings and antique furnishings. Guestrooms are described as simple, comfortable, cozy, and quiet. Some rooms overlook the lush gardens, while others offer views of the paved inner courtyard or the old town. Unique options include the "Tour des Amis" tower room and the "Indian Lodge," a free-standing cabin crafted from salvaged 18th-century timber. Rooms are equipped with private bathrooms, air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, and coffee/tea makers, along with complimentary Wi-Fi, bathrobes, and slippers. While some sources mention most bathrooms have showers only, certain Prestige rooms feature full-size marble baths.

4. Dining Experience

While La Baronnie does not feature a full-service restaurant for lunch or dinner, its breakfast and bar offerings are highly regarded. A "generous" and "gourmet" buffet breakfast, often served family-style on the sunny terrace, is a highlight. The breakfast spread includes local specialties, fresh pastries, fruits, organic products, local butter and jam, Île de Ré honey and fromage frais, scrambled eggs, bacon, charcuterie, smoked salmon, cheeses, cereals, oysters, shrimps, fish rillettes, mixed salads, sweet verrines, and homemade cakes, often accompanied by a complimentary glass of champagne. The hotel's stylish Bar 1721 is open in the evenings, serving light bites, aperitif platters, and original cocktails crafted by a friendly barman. A particularly well-received Sunday brunch, featuring local and homemade organic products, is available and open to non-resident guests by reservation.

5. Service & Staff

The service at La Baronnie is consistently highlighted as a standout feature. Guests praise the staff as "excellent," "wonderful," "friendly," "attentive," and "helpful," noting their welcoming demeanor. The dynamic team is described as attentive yet discreet, contributing to the hotel's reputation for exceptional service and a hospitable "home away from home" approach.

6. Location & Accessibility

La Baronnie boasts an "exceptional" location in the heart of Saint-Martin-de-Ré, a picturesque village recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The hotel is conveniently situated just a short walk (approximately 100 meters) from the port, as well as numerous restaurants and local attractions like the Vauban Fortifications and the Ernest Cognacq Museum. La Rochelle - Île de Ré Airport is 17 km away, and the hotel offers a paid airport shuttle service. The island is connected to the mainland by a toll bridge, and a TGV fast train service runs to La Rochelle from Paris, taking about 2.5 hours. Private, secure parking is available on-site for an additional fee, though guests should be aware that vehicle access to the port area is restricted and requires a code.

7. Value & Pricing

While specific guest comments on "value for money" are not explicitly detailed in the provided information, the overwhelmingly positive sentiment and numerous accolades suggest that guests find the experience at La Baronnie to be well worth the cost. Rates for rooms begin at approximately 210 EUR per night. One guest even noted the "comfort better than any other 4 Star hotel we have stayed in."

8. Common Complaints

While largely positive, some minor criticisms have been noted by guests:

  • The 18th-century decor, while elegant, might be perceived by some as "a bit sober and heavy-looking," potentially not aligning with a lighter "beach holiday" aesthetic.
  • Rooms facing the street may experience some noise, particularly during high season.
  • Noise from children playing in the pool area could occasionally drift to nearby rooms.
  • The heated outdoor pool has an age restriction, permitting only guests over 5 years old.
  • Some older or atypical rooms, like the "Tour des Amis," may have tighter spaces and steep stairs.
  • While some rooms have air conditioning, general descriptions sometimes suggest that the sea breeze largely mitigates the need for it, implying it might not be a universal feature across all rooms.

We absolutely adored this place. Not only is the estate beautiful but the staff is very lovely and very helpful. The food we had during our stay - particularly the brunch - was delicious. I am looking forward to coming back next summer and can’t wait to explore this lovely region even more.

Stayed 4 nights here for our wedding anniversary on the recommendations of friends to visit Ile de Re and stay in St Martin de Re. La Baronnie definitely has a good location. However, the room we had, "Vauban" was horrible, it was on the ground floor, very dark and extremely noisy, being close to both the lobby and the breakfast area. We could hear people coming and going !! To be avoided !! We complained about it, but the staff showed little receptiveness or concern. We later found that access to the spa's swimming pool came...
