Expert Review: JOALI Maldives
JOALI Maldives, situated on the pristine Muravandhoo Island in the Raa Atoll, is celebrated as a Michelin Key One-Key property, offering an ultra-luxury experience that seamlessly blends art, design, and exceptional hospitality.
1. Overall Rating & Sentiment
JOALI Maldives consistently receives overwhelmingly positive reviews, often described as "superb," "outstanding," "luxurious," and "exceptional". It's lauded as one of the finest resorts globally, with a significant "wow factor" that makes it stand out even among the top hotels in the Maldives. The general sentiment is one of profound relaxation, sophistication, and joy, driven by a focus on "refined simplicity" and the essentials of luxury.
2. Key Highlights
Guests particularly love JOALI Maldives for its unique art-immersive concept, with sculptural installations and thoughtful artworks integrated throughout the island, including a floating Manta Treehouse and other contemporary pieces. The design, executed by Istanbul-based studio Autoban, is described as beautiful, harmonious, elegant, stylish, and modern, blending Maldivian character with high-tech elements. The service and staff are frequently cited as genuinely outstanding, with the personal "jadugars" (butlers) often exceeding expectations. The cuisine is also a significant highlight, offering a diverse and high-quality dining experience. The resort's commitment to sustainability, including preserving over 1000 trees during construction and being single-use plastic-free, also garners appreciation.
3. Room Quality
The 73 villas at JOALI Maldives, including both beach and overwater options, are consistently praised for their spaciousness, comfort, and exquisite design. Each villa is inspired by individual stories and features high ceilings, elegant interiors with natural colors, terrazzo flooring, hand-carved panels, and custom furniture. Modern amenities include iPads for controlling lights, music, and AC. A key feature across all accommodations is a private infinity pool. Villas are well-separated, providing a high degree of privacy. Bathrooms are airy and often include double vanities and free-standing tubs with ocean views.
4. Dining Experience
JOALI Maldives offers a captivating selection of food and drink across its multiple restaurants. Vandhoo, the main restaurant, provides exceptional breakfast spreads with buffet and extensive à la carte options, including regional specialties and local dishes like seafood omelets, alongside Southeast Asian, Chinese, and Indian cuisines for dinner. Saoke offers Japanese cuisine, including sushi and teppanyaki, in a floating setting designed by Noriyoshi Muramatsu. Other dining options include Bellinis for Italian fine dining and TUH'U for authentic Levantine cuisine. The Mura Bar is available for relaxed meals, sundowners, and live performances. Beyond the restaurants, guests can enjoy unique destination dining experiences, such as breakfast in a Manta Ray treehouse or private sandbank meals. The resort emphasizes sustainability in its cuisine, using fresh, locally sourced, and ethically harvested ingredients.
5. Service & Staff
The service at JOALI Maldives is a cornerstone of its luxury experience, frequently described as "impeccable," "outstanding," and "truly wonderful". The resort's "Jadugars" (butlers), whose name means "skilled magician" in Dhivehi, are highly praised for their proactive, intuitive, and warm hospitality, anticipating guest needs and ensuring a seamless stay. Staff are consistently noted as well-trained, polished, and empowered to go above and beyond. The arrival experience, starting with a warm welcome at the private JOALI lounge in Malé airport, sets a positive tone for the entire stay.
6. Location & Accessibility
JOALI Maldives is located on Muravandhoo Island in the Raa Atoll, a naturally beautiful island with lush tropical vegetation and white sandy beaches. Accessibility is typically via a 40-minute seaplane transfer from Velana International Airport (Malé), with guests being escorted to a private JOALI lounge upon arrival. Alternatively, a 35-minute domestic flight to Ifuru Airport followed by a 15-minute speedboat journey is an option. The island itself is tiny but offers ample activities and a sense of seclusion.
7. Value & Pricing
JOALI Maldives operates at the ultra-luxury end of the market, making it one of the most expensive resorts in the Maldives. Past monthly average room rates have been around USD 6372.63. Shared seaplane transfers are approximately USD 1350 per adult. While the cost is significant, guests generally perceive it as worthwhile for the unparalleled privacy, exclusivity, and exceptional quality of the experience provided. The resort offers curated packages and promotions, including benefits for families, such as complimentary stays and dining for children.
8. Common Complaints
While generally exceptional, some minor criticisms have been noted. Early in its operation, some reviews mentioned minor service details that needed refining, although the resort showed strong efforts in service recovery. One isolated review from March 2023 cited "incompetent and arrogant service" related to booking and butler interactions, which stands in contrast to the majority of feedback. Some beaches feature breakwaters to manage erosion, which can slightly impact the idyllic view in certain areas. A review from 2024 suggested that the original JOALI's room design, while still luxurious, felt less "fresh" compared to its newer sister property, JOALI BEING, and mentioned a perceived lack of clear separation between rooms and an awkwardly designed sofa in some villas. Guests have also noted that food and beverage can be pricey. Finally, the resort is not wheelchair accessible in its rooms or common areas.

One of the best experiences in the maldives, everyone is supporting and kind. The island and the rooms is amazing and once you notice it you will see everything is piece of amazing arts. Also, we tried the Street Market Concept dinner and it was great experience

The property is nice, but I felt the service differs between men and women, especially from the female attendants in public areas. There was one girl, I think her name was Surabi. You could notice a change in tone and gestures depending on the guest. They should receive proper training on how to behave professionally with all guests.
