Expert Review: Il Sereno

Il Sereno, a Michelin Two-Keys property nestled in Torno on the shores of Italy's iconic Lake Como, consistently garners exceptional praise for its striking modern design, unparalleled service, and breathtaking location.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

Il Sereno is widely regarded as an exceptional luxury hotel, frequently scoring highly, with one platform reporting a 9.6 out of 10 based on numerous guest reviews. The sentiment is overwhelmingly positive, with guests describing it as "perfection," "dreamy," and "magical." It stands out for its bold, contemporary aesthetic, a refreshing contrast to the more traditional villas around Lake Como.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently laud Il Sereno for several key aspects:

  • Design: The hotel's architecture and interiors, designed by Patricia Urquiola, are a significant draw, celebrated for their modern, refined, and stylish approach.
  • Service: The staff's attentiveness, friendliness, and willingness to go "above and beyond" are frequently highlighted.
  • Location & Views: Its serene waterfront position in Torno offers spectacular, unspoiled views of Lake Como.
  • Amenities: The heated infinity pool extending over the water, complimentary paddleboards, and a bookable spa are popular features. The hotel also offers private docking facilities and a hand-built water limousine for guest use.

3. Room Quality

Il Sereno features just 30 suites, all designed to maximize the stunning lake views with floor-to-ceiling windows and private balconies. The rooms are spacious, with Double Rooms around 600 square feet and Junior Suites approximately 69 square meters, ensuring ample comfort. Modern furnishings, including pieces by Flos and B&B Italia, contribute to the chic design. Guests also appreciate the comfortable Super King Beds and the complimentary minibar.

4. Dining Experience

The hotel's Michelin-starred restaurant, Il Sereno al Lago (also known as Berton al Lago), offers exquisite Italian cuisine under Chef Raffaele Lenzi. The culinary philosophy emphasizes the pure essence of raw ingredients, with a focus on fresh, seasonal produce and vegetables. Dinner menus include tasting options that reinterpret traditional Italian gastronomy. Breakfast receives consistent praise, often described as "incredible," "delicious," and a "feast," with options like fresh-squeezed orange juice and coffee delivered to the room. The restaurant also boasts a beautiful outdoor terrace, with a section built directly over the water.

5. Service & Staff

The service at Il Sereno is a significant highlight, with guests frequently reporting that it "blew their minds" and that the staff are "sweet and helpful everywhere." The concierge service is noted as "top-notch," and the team is praised for their ability to craft luxury agendas and arrange boat excursions. Staff are consistently described as wonderful, exceptional, friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive to every detail.

6. Location & Accessibility

Located in Torno, a picturesque and tranquil village on the eastern shore of Lake Como, Il Sereno offers a serene escape. It's approximately a 15-minute drive from the larger town of Como, which provides a wider variety of shops and restaurants. Milan Malpensa International Airport is less than an hour away by car. The hotel's private docking facilities make arrival by boat a luxurious and convenient option, and exploring the lake by private boat is highly recommended. While a ferry service operates from Torno, private boat hire is suggested for a more efficient and personalized experience.

7. Value & Pricing

Il Sereno is a high-end luxury property, reflected in its pricing, with average room rates around $1313. Despite the cost, many guests feel it offers excellent value for the unparalleled experience, describing it as "worth the price" for the exceptional luxury, service, and location.

8. Common Complaints

While overwhelmingly positive, some minor criticisms have been noted:

  • A few guests have expressed disappointment with the dinner experience at the Michelin-starred restaurant, with one stating it was "not up to the bill's expectations" and another, from 2025, claiming the food wasn't "even regular restaurant quality" for a particular dish.
  • An older review from 2017, while praising the design, hinted at areas for improvement in "everything else," though without specific details.

Stayed for 4 nights - wish I could say I loved it as much as so many others appear to, but sadly not. Save for the bedroom, the rest of the room lacked windows and didn't feel particularly pleasant - just stark and bare. Rest of the hotel was nice, but not of the calibre of somewhere like Reschio in Umbria. General sentiment "it's okay" - but wouldn't rush back

We travel a lot for work and pleasure, and I can confidently say it is one of our favorite hotels in the world! From the moment you step onto the property you receive the most thoughtful, attentive yet not overbearing service. We enjoyed the pool and restaurant (had both lunch and dinner!) and enjoyed the walk to the town to take the ferry around the lake. We enjoyed breakfast in our room both day...

Stayed 6 nights at Il Sereno, beautiful rooms and good service. The food menu and presentation were nice, but the food lacked flavor. Unfortunately, the robes and towels were often not clean, and even after I reported it twice, they still arrived dirty. I also had a massage the therapist was excellent, but the massage bed was poor quality and noisy, making it hard to relax.

Had a wonderful experience having dinner here at Il Sereno. Roberto and Chiara were excellent servers in explaining each dish, and we had a lot of fun with them! We also had a lot of fun on the balcony ordering drinks and a cigar with the bartender upstairs. Fantastic experience, would love to stay here someday!

Overall, our stay was wonderful—the property is stunning, the views are breathtaking, and the service was generally very good. Don’t get me wrong—my lower rating is not because the hotel lacks cleanliness or beauty. However, when you’re paying a premium to stay at a property of this caliber, your expectations naturally rise to meet that level. Unfortunately, the housekeeping fell short of those ex...

The hotel offers a wonderful view, and the rooms are spacious with good features. However, the outdoor spa and swimming pool can be a drawback in cold or rainy weather. On the plus side, the spa is private, allowing you to reserve it for yourself for an hour. Unfortunately, the hotel lacks a hair salon, which would be a valuable amenity given its distance from the city. While the food tastes good,...
