Expert Review: Hotel Savoy Kansas City, Tapestry Collection by Hilton

Hotel Savoy Kansas City, Tapestry Collection by Hilton, a Michelin Key Selected property, offers guests a blend of historic charm, contemporary design, and a prime downtown location. This boutique hotel is frequently praised for its unique atmosphere and attentive service, though some minor issues are occasionally noted.

1. Overall Rating & Sentiment

The general consensus for Hotel Savoy Kansas City is overwhelmingly positive, with many guests rating their experience as "Very Good" or "Exceptional." On platforms like Priceline, it holds an 8 out of 10 rating based on hundreds of reviews. Cleanliness and staff performance consistently receive high scores, indicating a well-maintained property with a dedicated team. Its selection by the Michelin Key further underscores its high standards and quality.

2. Key Highlights

Guests consistently laud the Hotel Savoy for several standout features:

  • Historic Ambiance & Design: The hotel is celebrated for its preserved historic quality, beautiful building, and tasteful decor, featuring artwork and original stained glass. It maintains an "art-central theme and vibe" from its previous incarnation as a 21c Museum Hotel.
  • Excellent Location: Situated in Downtown Kansas City's Library District, the hotel boasts an enviable location "walkable to top attractions" such as the Kansas City Convention Center, T-Mobile Center, City Market, and the Power & Light District. Its proximity to the free KC Streetcar system (a 5-minute walk to the "Library" stop) also provides convenient access to Union Station and other areas.
  • Attentive Service: The staff is frequently highlighted for being "friendly, helpful, and accommodating".
  • Thoughtful Amenities: Guests appreciate amenities like a 24-hour fitness center, a pet-friendly policy, and often free WiFi.

3. Room Quality

The hotel features 117 individually decorated guestrooms, described as "spacious and comfortable" with "unique decor". Rooms come equipped with pillowtop beds featuring Frette Italian sheets and pillow menus, ensuring a restful night. In-room amenities include coffee/tea makers, flat-screen TVs with cable channels, air conditioning, and complimentary wired and wireless internet access. Bathrooms are fitted with complimentary toiletries and hair dryers. Thoughtful touches like robes, vanity kits, lighted vanity mirrors, workspaces, and even personalized TV greetings add to the guest experience.

However, some guests have reported issues such as outdated rooms, a "sewer smell" outside the bathroom in one instance, or bad water smell. There have also been occasional complaints about uncomfortable beds (specifically a "crinkle sound" from waterproof mattress covers), loud air conditioners, lack of hot water, or low water pressure. Despite these, many guests describe the rooms as generally quiet, insulated from city noise.

4. Dining Experience

The on-site restaurant, The Savoy, is an "iconic fixture" in Kansas City, recognized for its upscale American cuisine with a contemporary touch, drawing from the city's rich culinary roots. It prides itself on using seasonal, locally sourced ingredients and offers an evolving list of cocktails and wines from local distilleries and family-owned vineyards. Many guests praise The Savoy for its "excellent service, great food, and unique atmosphere". While the dinner menu is often well-received, some guests have found it to be "too fancy" or not to their personal taste.

Regarding breakfast, an American or buffet option is offered, typically available for a surcharge (approximately USD 13 to 35 per person). An older review (March 2023) noted a limited buffet selection for the price, suggesting the full restaurant breakfast might be more extensive, though the current Savoy menu lists various individual breakfast items, including a substantial "Savoy Breakfast".

5. Service & Staff

The hotel staff consistently receives high marks, with a staff rating of 9.2 on KAYAK. Guests frequently describe them as "friendly, helpful, and accommodating". The 24-hour front desk is staffed with multilingual individuals ready to assist with various needs, contributing to a comfortable and memorable stay. While the service is generally excellent, isolated incidents like employees knocking on doors before checkout time or slow resolution of minor maintenance issues (e.g., non-working thermostat or Netflix) have been mentioned.

6. Location & Accessibility

Hotel Savoy Kansas City boasts a "great location" in the heart of Downtown Kansas City's Library District. It offers "excellent accessibility" to numerous key attractions:

  • Kansas City Convention Center: a 7-minute walk
  • T-Mobile Center: a 15-minute walk (0.8 miles)
  • City Market/River Market: less than a mile
  • Power & Light District: 0.70 miles
  • Kansas City Public Library: a stone's throw away

The hotel is also conveniently located near the free KC Streetcar system, with the "Library" stop just a five-minute walk, providing easy transportation to Union Station and other points of interest. For those arriving by air, Kansas City International Airport is approximately 16 miles away. The area is perceived as safe by many guests, including solo female travelers.

7. Value & Pricing

Opinions on value and pricing vary. Some guests consider it a "nice hotel for the money", while others found it "expensive for what it is" or "a little bit expensive". Average nightly rates can fluctuate significantly, with examples ranging from around $103 to $245, depending on the season and day of the week. April is typically the most expensive month, and December the cheapest.

Additional costs to consider include:

  • Parking: Self-parking ranges from $15 to $30 per night, with valet parking at $39 per night. This is a recurring point of concern for some guests.
  • Resort Fee: A resort fee of $5 per accommodation, per stay, applies.
  • Deposit: A $100 per night deposit is required.
  • Pet Fee: A non-refundable fee of $75 per stay for pets (up to 70 lbs).
  • Breakfast: Offered for an additional charge.

8. Common Complaints

While largely positive, recurring criticisms include:

  • Parking Costs and Availability: The price of both self-parking and valet, along with occasional challenges in finding parking, is a frequent complaint.
  • Maintenance Issues: Guests have occasionally reported "outdated" rooms, "sewer smell," bad water odor, non-functioning thermostats, or issues with hot water pressure.
  • Bed Comfort: Some reviewers noted uncomfortable beds, specifically mentioning a "crinkle sound" from waterproof mattress covers.
  • Room Noise: Loud air conditioning units have been a source of discomfort for some guests.
  • Security Concerns: One review mentioned a car break-in across the street from the hotel, though guests generally feel safe within the property and its immediate vicinity.
  • WiFi: While advertised as free, some sources suggest a charge for in-room WiFi.
  • Art Removal: A few guests expressed disappointment that art from its former 21c branding had been removed and not replaced, impacting the initial "museum hotel" appeal.

This is a wonderful boutique hotel with great history. We were able to check in early and check in was very easy. Our room was excellent with a great king sized bed that was very comfortable. The shower was big enough to have a party in with high quality toiletries and plenty of hot water. Sometimes historical hotels struggle with that. Complimentary coffee in room is Nespresso and was deligh...

The hotel is nice, but under renovation. The valet/parking company is trash and no one is willing to accept accountability for their failings since it is a third party to the hotel. Hotel is a boutique, historic property with fun and interesting design and architecture. The front desk and restaurant staff are warm and friendly. Unbeknownst to me, the hotel is under renovation and will be for ano...

The Savoy Hotel is my new go-to hotel in KC. I love the heritage with the well appointed modern updates. I’m pleased with the quality of the furnishings and fabrics. Large pillows and quality sheets. Rooms are spacious for a city hotel. Staff is helpful and kind. Of course the luxurious Savoy Grill and bar on the first floor is always a treat.

Front staff service very friendly and accommodating. Love the boutique look of the hotel that preserves historical finishes. Our room was spacious with large windows. My husband ate at the bar and said th...

This has become my home away from home while traveling for work. Is this an older building with quarks? Yes. Is the water pressure and temperature finicky? Yes.. Do the mini fridges kinda suck? Yep.. But let me tell you.. the beds are so comfy! The hotel is quiet. The staff is top notch, and they remember your name on return visits and make you feel welcome. They are always happy to chat with yo...

One of the best hotel experiences we have had in quite a long time. We got in a little early, and unlike quite a few Hiltons of late, we got an early check-in without any fuss. The staff were very kind and attentive. This hotel has hands down the best bed and pillows of any hotel I have stayed at. Now, the plastic bed wrap isn't the best, but, overall, the sleep was great. The bar was great, and...
